Eternal CCG is in open beta and on Steam

I think the best part about playing Eternal, as a hearthstone player, is that the two games are different enough that I like playing both. I've been kinda looking for this in a DCG and a lot of the close calls I played recently (shadowverse, duelyst, and elder scrolls legends) are too similar to hearthstone. Those other card games I ended up moving on from because they don't provide a compelling reason to play over hearthstone, while this one does because it's very different.

This is where i'm at, though with duelyst it was more the artstyle rather than it not being different enough.

Having to start a collection from 0 is really the big hurdle. I have so many cards in hearthstone i can build any deck i want. Will be hard to go back from that.

Eternal is really generous though, even after the shiftstone nerf. You can build a solid Rakano deck after a couple of days and a t1/2 control deck after a week or two, which you couldn't even dream of in HS.

I'm having quite a bit of fun so far so i'll with it.

I also like that i don't have to play forever to unlock the free class cards so that helps as well.

First 7-win draft in a while, and first 7 wins with aggro ever for me.

The sabotages and the plague weren't worth the shadow splash in the end, but the sidearms carried multiple games when I had just a little bit bigger board than my opponent did. The advantage always snowballed from there. And because of them, as well as Sword of Icaria, Crowd Favorite managed to actually put in work!

I'm having a hard time to create a decent Fire deck. I've try a more a Control deck with Fast easy to cast monster + damage magic to prevent the ennemies to summon any kind of unit. But it doesn't work at all... I'm having a insane problem at late game, my spell are never good enough to kill fully equip monster. This is where i go destroy. Anybody have a good build whit that kind of strategy in mind ? Thank you

yeah this game feels a lot different from Hearthstone. I see a lot of Steam reviews calling it Hearthstone + MtG but only thing I see that is similar to HS is the cute backgrounds

Damn, last night I opened a legendary after I went on a 3 win streak to finish a quest. Now I just got another legendary after a quick gauntlet run. Call of the ancients... 1 mana to shuffle 4x 2 mana 6/6 aegis/endurance units in the deck. Seems pretty good tbh although quite slow.

I think people bring up hearthstone because that is simply the most widely known I guess, next to MTG (more than MTG at this point?). But yeah, I think it's more MTG than hearthstone.

I guess it also shares in the fact you can't auto-mute your opponent lol

I actually dislike the artstyle of duelyst too, even though I play games with that artstyle all the time. The UI too... Kinda weird.

Played Forge and grabbed all the cards I didn't own, made a shit deck and won 0 games. At least I get to keep the cards. Do you keep all copies of the same card or just 1 of that card. I swear I took Stun twice and in my library I only had 1 copy.

Little nitpick, wish it had a more pc friendly interface. Don't like dragging cards to play them and wish it had a attack all button or mouse gesture, like to play one handed >_>

Press the A key to attack with everything. Maybe you can find a way to bind it to a mouse button?

Well, first time for everything.

Been fooling around with how much I could replicate of my old Praxis token deck, but now adding Stonescar elements to it.

Combust
Obsidian Golem
Devour
Soul Collector
Oblivion Spike
Smuggler's Stash (holy shit it's amazing!)

AND!

Runic Revolver.

I have been curious about how the revolver performs, since the stats are pathetic, but you can theoretically have infinite armor while attacking if you have moderate control of the board and have no direct damage coming at you.

So, although I still need to test further because I only have one copy, I had a hilarious game where the last half a dozen turns were me knocking out every single minion my opponent summoned with a single, normal, Runic Revolver (with bit of assistance from a pair of 3/3 grenadins when the unit's health was bit out of reach). My hand just kept getting bigger because I got all these answer cards that I didn't need. If nothing else, it's encouraged me to keep testing further before I replace it with another relic weapon.

You can press A to attack with all units

My left hand is out of service and my right hand has to move all the way from right to left, sometimes when I'm not lazy I press A. It will simple to just implement a right click on a unit for all of them to attack.

I know about the shortcuts, sucks that they can't be rebind.

Newb as fuck here, have a question.

Scenario:

- I have a 1/4 Scaly Gruan

- The AI has a 1/1 Tinker Apprentice, a 1/1 Steadfast Deputy, and a 2/1 Emerald Acolyte.

- He attacks with all three, and the game asks me what blocker do I want to damage with my 1/4. I choose to damage the 2/1 blocker, but then it shows my 1/4 taking damage from the other 1/1's right away and dying.

- I'm assuming he blocked with all three minions, but why didn't the two 1/1's die against my 1/4?

When you attack you commit the 1 to the first attack, and it gets deducted for the rest of the attacks. So in that scenario after the first attack your monster was a 0/2 card.

Sorry if I'm derping and missing something, but wouldn't my 1/4 card be at 1/2 after blocking the 2/1? Then it shows it getting hit by the two 1/1's, I figured those would die as well.

Your card has 1 attack to spend, it doesn't remain after you "used" that one attack point to kill the first unit.
Much like your defense is depleted by enemy attacks, your attack is depleted by enemy defenses.

It became a 0/2 because the 1/4 used up it's one attack point killing the 2/1

You were going against 3 HP mass of blockers with just 1 attack. Your attacks get consumed after each blocker in order.

Alright gonna give this a shot. Hope it' more than just a reskinned Hearthstone. That Animu CCG was a terrible experience.

Caved and crafted 2 clockroaches. I've been trying to just luck out and get them from packs. Amazing so far in my static bolts/echo deck. Nesting Avisaur is such a MVP. Quickly got up to 1 mana 7/7,8/8s and should have been 0 mana if i didn't misclick once. Just built a huge wall and had all the time in the world to cycle into static bolts or just bash in the face with board.

Game has more in common with MtG than HS.

Just went through the tutorial and I can already see that. Slightly more complexity and more interesting interactions than in HS. Not quite on the MtG level but that is fine. Will play this some more I think.

The options have a thing tha tlets me deactivate hotkeys. What actually are the hotkeys? I can't find them anywhere.

Alt tabbed out and back in and for whatever reason got the game locked to 24 FPS. Unity game (I think) and this has happened with some other Unity games on a gsync monitor.

Let me tell you, those that say FPS doesnt matter for turn based games are full of shit. Was in the middle of a match and didn't want to concede. That was rough.

I think the similarities do a disservice to the game. Looks like a cheap copy of Heartsone (board, attack animation, tokens, UI) but mechanically it's more akin to MtG. Almost passed on this game since at first glance looks like Heartstone, and I didn't enjoy the mechanics or the grind for cards.

This game is really generous with the card rewards which I highly appreciate, you can design blockers, instant spells, payed abilities on units, mana curve and it brings new things (really like Warcry).

Hope you enjoy your stay.

There are only 2, really:
A to make all your creatures attack
Space to confirm stuff like confirm an attack, end turn, basically all the stuff that is on the green button in the UI.

Thank you. A to make all my creatures attack seems like a useful shortcut at least.

Honestly kind of obsessed with this game. I expect it to fade since it's only been a few days but... so far, so good.

It helps that it's insanely generous. 7-0 in my first Gauntlet gave me free pack, other goodies, and a free Forge entry. My 7-1 Forge run gave me 5(!!!) free packs and other goodies. I now have enough gold to enter Forge two more times, too.

I threw them $3 just out of principle, but I wish I would have bumped it to $10 at least - not just because I wanna support the devs. But also $3 doesn't really get you anything.

couple more detailed impressions 15 hours in:

this is all from the perspective of someone who has only really had any sort of significant experience with Hearthstone other than this as far as CCGs go

the sigil stuff is REALLY annoying sometimes,i've had multiple games where i've lost because i've done things like draw nothing but power cards literally 10 turns in a row, doesn't happen every game but it's so annoying when it does

starting to get the hang of it but the whole blocking thing in general feels so weird to me,I think that more than anything else is what makes it feel different than hearthstone

not weird in a bad way or anything but definitely takes some getting used to the fact that a lot of times the best move is to do nothing and how many games there are where both players have a board and spend multiple turns mostly just building it up

I feel like the drafting section should have a brief tutorial popup or something,i've gotten the hang of it by now mostly but it's really easy to end up with a deck with way too many colors of cards

Draft Matchmaking
Improvements have been made to Draft matchmaking to find higher quality matches.

Card Fixes
Safe Return now shows the target unit when there is a response window to the spell.

Fixed a bug where Stone Cudgel could sometimes fail to be destroyed.

Fixed a bug where Sauropod Wrangler would sometimes crash the game when it died.

Beat my Free Forge entry! A feat I probably won't replicate. Got to the last battle in Gauntlet and lost =(. Been trying a green/red deck with a random mix of creatures. Usually win by getting out grenalins + rally or buffing a few fliers with Mantle/General izaro

Tried draft for the first time tonight. Man... it's stressful, but it sure is the most cost-effective way to build up your library, isn't it?

I went 5 wins my 2nd draft and got 3 bonus packs and 3000 Gold. That's a total of 7 packs for 2000 Gold, which feels like it should be the reward level you get for going all the way to 7 wins, not barely scraping over a .500 win rate. Although it was that single diamond chest that really did it - it had 2k gold in it. 0_0 So I suppose that single diamond chest is the threshold you really want to hit. One of the decks I lost to was so strong it felt like it was Constructed. Multiple (!!!) clockroaches.

Drafting is pretty weird. I went 1-7 my first deck, which was actually (I thought) very tuned blue/purple. Lots of fliers, hard removal, etc. Then the 5-3 deck was just some janky mix of weapons and Warcry, and it steamrolled people.

I just finished the campaign and didn't really know what to do next so I played a ranked match, didn't stand a chance. Is there something I have to do to unlock casual PVP matches? It's greyed out for me

Pretty sure casual PVP matches just aren't in yet. Gauntlet and forge (PvE Hearthstone arena like mode) are PvE modes that seem like a good step up from the tutorial for learning the game (gauntlet more so since it's free). They are both also pretty good at growing your collection. Forge seems to easily pay for itself at lower difficulties since it's not that hard to get 7 wins (most of the AI decks in my first run were really bad).

There's also draft. It's quite hard, especially if you've never played MtG style drafting, but at least you aren't limited by having a small collection and you only need about 1-2 wins to break even. It is expensive though.

Alright, thanks. I've only played a bit of Hearthstone prior to this, so a couple of things seem familiar at least. I usually have the most trouble building my own decks though.

I would go to gauntlet and start learning the game more in depth there before going to competitive mode. Gauntlet can earn a lot of rewards and I personally find it fun for a singleplayer mode.

Almost done with the campaign at this point and so far this game is really good. I might stick with it for longer than I expected. Let's see how much of a player base it will get.

Alright, I want friends, do you?

If you answered yes to this question then here's a little spreadsheet, I can and will modify with additional fields if deemed necessary.

------------------Quote to get the link----------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Struggling to determine what direction to craft in first, seems sandstorm titan and siraf are considered "safe" crafts as they have uses in quite a few different decks. I played mostly combrei in beta with these cards and thought about going in a slightly different direction but a true midrange/big combrei deck is calling my name. Also really intrigued by a Feln control deck, especially after reading through RNGEternals article today, would wipe out a significant chunk of my sigils...

Added myself but you should hide the document's link using the email trick.

There is a whole play a friend achievement btw... for like a pittance of 50 gold lol... like 5% of a pack.

You're probably right, figured this thread would be quiet enough that lurkers wouldn't fuck with it, but there's always one out there...can you remove the link from your quote when you get a chance?

Yeah, nearly all of the achievement rewards are pretty terrible. I'm hoping we're able to get a casual play mode without waiting too long and maybe some sort of "play a friend" quest.

They've got a really good base here to build off of, as long as patches/updates come along at a reasonable frequency I'll be quite happy.

I'm personally hoping a spectate friends mode makes it in pretty quick. Would like to ride shotgun while my friend drafts, and vice versa.

Good to see the game picking up a bit of traction on GAF. As you said, the base is really solid. Just needs to be filled out with more features.

Is it possible to export your deck to a web app or something?

I'm working on a static bolt deck.

2 Excavate (Set1 #71)
3 Seek Power (Set1 #408)
3 Backlash (Set1 #200)
2 Lightning Storm (Set1 #206)
4 Lightning Strike (Set1 #197)
4 Second Sight (Set1 #207)
4 Static Bolt (Set1 #194)
2 Storm Lynx (Set1 #353)
4 Clockroach (Set1 #94)
3 Ice Sprite (Set1 #214)
3 Polymorph (Set1 #211)
2 Scorpion Wasp (Set1 #96)
4 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)
1 Champion of Wisdom (Set1 #358)
3 Nesting Avisaur (Set1 #225)
2 Jotun Hurler (Set1 #227)
1 Twinbrood Sauropod (Set1 #113)
1 Thunderstrike Dragon (Set1 #243)
2 Channel the Tempest (Set1 #244)
13 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
8 Time Sigil (Set1 #63)
4 Seat of Wisdom (Set0 #63)

I'm assuming the first deck I design will end up being pure trash. I don't have the clockroaches yet, but they seem good enough to provide a solid board presence while I ramp up to burn my opponent out.

I'm not sure if you're still working on this, but locopojo has a carpet shuffle deck that's very similar in design philosophy, I would totally recommend anyone to check out his Youtube channel, one of the best current content providers for Eternal. Will at least give you some ideas. I tried it a bit during closed beta but wasn't very successful at playing it well.

The biggest take aways would probably be that a couple elysians will make all the difference in the world, excavate or second site plus elysisan gives your bolt echo, after and excavating it will echo it again, and don't underestimate levitate, super cheap way to get rid of Aegis while drawing a card. Pretty sure I got some 7 or 8 static bolts in a couple longer games. My trouble was that I got into a few situations where I fucked myself by playing excavate or second site to try to get out of trouble when I should have just been drawing the next card, either that or just having my harsh rules at the bottom of my deck.

That specific deck is just very unreliable, much like crownroaches is.
Also aggro decks can pretty much completely ruin you if you don't draw the right stuff and the change to push onward becoming shadow means that you are even less reliable than before, unless you branch to that faction as well.

Forgot about the push onward change, not to mention the secret pages change. Was mostly just a fun deck to play around with, but those changes likely did make it completely unplayable. Still not a terrible reference if you want to try to make a static bolt deck work somehow.

4x Lightning Storm seems like a must to deal with Stonescar. Often that matchup simply comes down to if you draw it or not. Levitate may also be a good option to pop Aegis against Rakano or Combrei.

Yeah, usually run a couple of levitate for that.
The drawing part is what push onwards was very good for, but alas...

Yeah, I'm still iterating on it. Levitate seems like solid card cycle. Secret pages is something I looked at but at 3 cost it seemed a bit much for it's impact. I just noticed secret pages in his video has echo and is 2 cost... secret pages in the game is just 3 cost without echo. That's a pretty big power change. Basically a completely new card. It's mana ramp now heh
