Eternal CCG is in open beta and on Steam

This game is pretty generous so far. I have 95% of the commons, 92% of the uncommons, 52% of the rares, and 25% of the legendaries after a week of F2P engagement in my evenings (while still completing quests in Duelyst, Hearthstone, and Infinity Wars every day). Of course, the decks I really want to make have several of those badass legendaries. I'm not particularly inclined to buy card packs because the dust you get from disenchanting is rather weak.

The AI is easily exploitable, especially when it comes to fast spells.

AI is offering a free trade? It has a fast spell, guaranteed. You offer a free trade but in actuality have a fast spell in your hand? AI will still try to block.

The most difficulty increase that you'll see is that the AI gets decks that are less built to deliberately get flooded by sigils.
Also, the AI will take on any minion trade, and it will use burn spells on whatever you play first most of the time. The AI plays "smart", but because you know its smart plays you can manipulate it consistently. The only time I lose to the AI is when I get screwed on the draw.

As with most digital CCGs it's all about hitting that sweet spot where you start getting duplicates of higher rarities consistently (rare in this case), and purchasing packs gets you there faster. In closed beta I was regularly sitting on 10-20k dust with little to spend it on.

It's why new players always salivate at dust amounts that to veterans are peanuts at best.

Gathering dust for legendaries takes a really long time, especially a full set of them, but I'm not as annoyed at it when it's a 6-drop or bigger.

A bomb is a bomb, there are plenty good rares to use for that, and even then you might not necessarily need four of the legendaries for the deck to be functional.

But when it's a 4 or 5-drop if not even earlier card?
It hurts.

yeah looks like once you have all the rares you pretty much get a legendary every 5 packs(between stones from rares+the base 100 from opening a pack and the 1/10 chance of getting a legendary)

sounds pretty easy once you get to that point

Is this coming to Android at some point? I'd really love to play it on my phone.

It was available in closed beta and everyone who had it in closed beta still has it. They took it away for now for whatever reason but it should be coming back eventually, maybe when they get payments going on those clients. I mostly play on Android even though it is a huge battery drain

back to back 7 win drafts :)

lost a game at 5-1 because I wasn't sure if Aegis blocked the two damage from Outlands Sniper and wanted to find out haha

Tournament is over, and a new deck just barely made it out as the victor, almost beaten by KampfKrote's pretty traditional Midrange Stonescar

Toth201's Shimmerpack deck (the cards that I don't have enough of are pretty good indicator where you'll spend your dust lol):
JtSiWUy.jpg

4 Grenadin Drone (Set1 #5)
4 Initiate of the Sands (Set1 #74)
3 Permafrost (Set1 #193)
4 Talir's Favored (Set0 #11)
4 Temple Scribe (Set1 #502)
4 Amber Acolyte (Set1 #93)
4 Assembly Line (Set1 #29)
3 Scorpion Wasp (Set1 #96)
4 Marisen's Disciple (Set1 #104)
4 Vault of the Praxis (Set1 #480)
4 Xenan Obelisk (Set1 #103)
4 Scouting Party (Set1 #488)
4 Shimmerpack (Set1 #365)
3 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
2 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
6 Time Sigil (Set1 #63)
2 Cobalt Monument (Set1 #418)
2 Elysian Banner (Set1 #421)
2 Praxis Banner (Set0 #59)
4 Seat of Impulse (Set0 #54)
4 Seat of Wisdom (Set0 #63)
He teched in Polymorphs and Backlashes against the finals Stonescar matchup, helping in desperate trades against Champions of Chaos in particular.

Impressive that Vault of the Praxis got this far. LocoPojo got his aggressive justice-splashing Vault of the Praxis deck to loser's semifinals and managed to snatch one round from KampfKrote as well.

Doubtful that Toth's deck will be filling the ladder because in the matches he really relied on the Shimmerpacks to win, though the wins were pretty decisive when he did draw one

Pretty fun game and close to Magic. Still in the campaign so not sure if I have seen everything yet? Are there counter spells or is fast spells tied to the attacker/blocker declare phase?

Fast spells can be cast after declaring attacker, assigning blocker, opponent starting a spell cast or unit ability, and before starting your turn again.

So yes the fast spells work as counterspells. The most similar one to the Counterspell is this one tho. Nothing that prevents minion summon outright.

let's say i have a 1/1 unit, my opponent casts a spell/effect that reduces its stats by 1/1 (-1/-1 to a unit)
but i cast a +3/+3 fast spell (finest hour) on my unit to counter that, shouldn't my unit survive the ordeal? i've tried a few times and always my unit dies at the end

Finest hour is +3/+3 until end of turn, most of the -1/-1 effects (like Plague) are permanent so your unit should die when Finest Hour wears off and it goes back to being a 0/0.

Unless you're saying it dies right as the -1/-1 spell resolves, which I don't think is supposed to happen.

Watched chunks of the tournament, they have ALOT of work to do for production. Thankfully it can't get much worse, was still neat to watch and have the players hanging out in chat watching the other games was entertaining.

For those interested here are the decklists used. Be prepared to break out your shards!

The Toth201s "FTP Vault" was definitely a fan favorite and looked super fun to play, unfortunately the key component (Shimmerpack) is a legendary I don't see much versatility for. If I ever open a pack and get them or see them in draft or forge I'll be picking them up though.

So, I downloaded this on the weekend. I play Hearthstone and used to play MtG as well.

I went through the campaign, gauntlet, forge and draft (made it to Bronze so far in my first draft).

I like it so far. I think it's got potential for sure. I tried Duelyst and it just didn't click for me. I'll see if I can balance both this and Hearthstone in the near future. I am somewhere between a complete casual and a competitive player. I also added my ID to the list that was posted a couple of pages ago. Anyway, GAF, thanks for the heads-up on this.

Boy I sure wouldn't mind if people started copying the deck on ladder tho. Toth got most of his wins playing from behind and surviving just by the skin of his teeth, seems like a really skill-intensive deck to pilot

With the amount of Feln Control on the ladder right now you'll probably have a bad time if you're trying to grind out wins. But it's got to feel good to land a shimmer on a full board.

Throwing this up for the new page. I will definitely need to go through it and add people, I think a couple people might have sent me a request but I've been pretty much rejecting any request as I was getting a few with people bitching. Hopefully they add the ability to include a message along with the request.

Thanks, added.

I haven't been added by salty losers (or even winners) in Eternal yet, but it's a matter of time. And I bet when it happens, it'll happen while I'm playing an absolutely janky untested deck that loses to pretty much everyone. Because that's when it always happens.

Was only like 200 dudes that tuned into the stream. What can Eternal do to promote the game more? What is holding it back? Why only 200 people tune in to watch the game? I think it could use more exciting vfx / audio (fluff) to make it feel more gamey for Twitch. Hard to tell the impact a card has unless you follow the game. Also didnt help announcer was breathing into the mic and they had this huge border to the left that covered up the cards that got played.

Also didnt help announcer was breathing into the mic and they had this huge border to the left that covered up the cards that got played.

I agree. I tuned in but couldn't stand watching passed one match. One observer didn't have ad-block, the audio was inconsistent, the recording looked highly compressed at 720p 15fps and the overlays were basic.

Technical issues aside, my only other issue was (as a new player who just joined in Steam Open Beta) I don't know what the cards are doing half the time. It would be great in an observer mode to enable played cards to hold on screen long enough for a casual viewer to read it.

Eternal should get some sponsored steamers going. Watching Kibler has been the most exposure. It appears Amaz does play the game. Kripp and his distaste for the current HS meta would be a big one too.

Nobody's gonna watch a tournament of a CCG they don't play. I don't think DWD have started marketing the game whatsoever and when they do sponsored (HS) streamers would indeed be a great start.

I wouldn't get too concerned over turnout just yet, although I do agree that it was lower than I expected. Based on the stream quality it's probably a good thing it was a fairly quiet stream...

The game has only been in open beta for just over a week and has had zero advertising push, I would expect that to change as it continues to be polished. I read somewhere that they are working on adding voice overs for cards and other polish that would really help, hopefully it's not too far off. They can definately do a much better job at explaining the cards and play possibilities, I think that's especially important now as the game is just trying to get it's legs.

I also don't think it would be fair to ever really expect the same level of tournament support as Hearthstone get from Blizzard, they just has deeper pockets to polish their streams and tournaments.

Amaz has been playing alot of Draft, I was watching some LocoPojo over the weekend and he ran into him a couple times, pretty sure they were diamond league at the time. I don't think he's streamed it at all though...

yeah I fully intended to watch it myself and also gave up pretty quickly due to the stream issues

honestly 200 sounds pretty solid considering those issues plus the fact that there's still only like 1000-1500 or so people playing the game at a time right now

hopefully it continues to grow over time as it leaves beta etc, would be nice if the reddit got a bit more active, there was more than literally 2-3 streamers even playing at non peak times etc

Yeah I ran into him a couple of days ago too. He butchered my deck that was 5-2 at the time with a sick Elysian echo deck. It wasn't even close. Not sure if its still true now but he was #1 ranked in Masters for draft shortly after that.

Read all you guys comments good points!

One more complaint I had (which still hasnt been corrected all this time) is the bottom of the cards is clipped. So viewers cannot see the name of the cards in the player's hand. Was so impossible to follow the Eternal stream ;(

Granted, I could follow it to an extent and learned bout some other cards (like Champion of Chaos). I dont really understand that card's bonuses for me its always a 5/5 lol but the text seems to indicate it can grow???

Champion of Chaos is a 3/3 that has two abilities: +1/+1 and Overwhelm if you have three red influence, and +1/+1 and Deadly if you have three purple influence. So it can either be a 3/3, 4/4, or 5/5 depending on what your influence looks like.

So I realized I've been getting too cute in draft and I'm just generally not good enough yet to try to be cute so I went ahead and drafted the most aggressive deck I could and had my first 7 win run (7-1). So much incredible value for Bladekin Apprentice, especially if you get a weapon on it right away, it single handily steam rolled its way to several wins.

My only loss was to a recurring nightmare, He frogged my Valkyrie, Permafrosted my Hooru and I had used my Temper earlier. Nothing left to do but watch and hope to quickly draw my last Valkyrie.

There's actually 47 cards in here (which I'm somehow just realizing lol), if I were to cut a couple (which I should have) it would have been Longhorn Sergeant, and maybe Pyre Adept as neither made any significant impact.

1 Elder's Feather (Set1 #128)
1 Finest Hour (Set1 #130)
1 Grenadin Drone (Set1 #5)
1 Heavy Axe (Set1 #4)
1 Oni Ronin (Set1 #13)
1 Temper (Set1 #10)
3 Ticking Grenadin (Set1 #12)
1 Tinker Apprentice (Set1 #131)
2 Bladekin Apprentice (Set1 #22)
2 Ornate Katana (Set1 #23)
1 Pyre Adept (Set1 #21)
2 Rebuke (Set1 #141)
1 Crownwatch Deserter (Set1 #316)
1 Granite Acolyte (Set1 #31)
2 Rally (Set1 #33)
1 Rebel Sharpshooter (Set1 #30)
1 Longhorn Sergeant (Set1 #318)
1 Recogulator (Set1 #37)
2 Renegade Valkyrie (Set1 #321)
1 Hooru Fledgling (Set1 #159)
1 Ceremonial Mask (Set1 #178)
2 Frontline Cyclops (Set1 #53)
10 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
7 Justice Sigil (Set1 #126)

^ I drafted a bunch of cards but havent had time to play Draft mode. I think I"m way too greedy to do good there. I'm just gonna swipe all the rares

Does this game save replays? Would be fun to watch you guys play. I guess I could just go to youtube. Right now I am so swamped playing a bunch of games from Steam sale but I think I'd enjoy watching more vids of this game. Plus I still play HS but its weird now that I have been 'enlightened' to how nice it is to Counterspell with an Instant spell. Seems too good to be true? If someone wants to silence/remove my minion I can Aegis or play a Counterspell.

Just seems too good to be possible? I really havent touched the surface deep enough how it works but it seems really ease to use.

edit- The reason I may seem baffled to you guys is the game never gave me Protect or the other Blue counterspell cards. I crafted one Protect but apparently I'll need to craft more due to the high variance in the 75 card decks to see it in action. So far been using the more offensive fast spells

If you interested in watching there's a couple people who are regularly on Twitch. It's pretty neat right now as these are some of the best players in the game yet the communities are small. It's a nice change of pace from trying to go into a popular HS streamers channel. I would totally recommend LocoPojo who's been mostly doing drafting but is one of the better ranked players and KampfKrote who is almost entirely ranked play. Loco has a pretty good Youtube channel, unfortunately KampfKrote doesn't have one set up yet.

RE: Countering. Protect is a cheap choice and can get the job done, it's good that it can also be cast on yourself. The blue spell You're thinking of is backlash? The nice thing about that spell is that it can also give you an opportunity to counter any spell such as Scouting Party which is devastating. Stand Together is the other one and sees the most play. It's the most expensive (for both crafting and play cost) but can get some crazy value if you have more than a couple minions on board.

I really like https://www.twitch.tv/sir_rhino for my Eternal streaming needs. He's a good dude who tries to keep a pretty positive chat, does a bunch of drafts that I've learned a lot from, and brews up some sweet Ranked decks (sometimes very good ones like Feln Control and sometimes really fun weird ones).

Also, I just got my 5th 7 win draft. Things I've adjusted that helped me in the last few drafts:

1) Fixing is great. I regularly pick fixing above a middling playable now, since I almost always end up having to make 5-10 cuts while building my deck anyway. Having enough banners, strangers, and Seek Powers to splash a few powerful cards or just straight up play 3 colors is really great for upping the average card quality of a deck.

2) If my deck doesn't have a good number of flyers or enough removal to deal with flyers, I'm gonna lose 1-2 blowouts to flyer heavy decks.

3) Biggest predictor of a 7 win deck for me is Karmic Guardian and a handful of ways to make her bigger. That card is straight up busted in draft. Also applies to Silverwing Familiar.

edit: Holy shit I just played LSV in draft my first match after getting to Diamond. Beat him with my sweet Combrelysian Big Flyers(tm) deck. Felt pretty good! Aaaaaaaaand that deck ended up 7-2. Flyers are OP.

Still impressed with how generous this game is. Had three quests built up (including the weekly) and knocked them all out fairly quickly, netting me 2200 gold. And of course there's the fact that I had an entire free deck waiting for me when I logged in, too.

Maybe it's just the meta in Silver atm but the free Time/Justice deck from this week is climbing me up the ladder faster than the Fire/Justice Warcry deck I (along with half the player base) was running.

After going 1-3 and 0-3 I'm very trigger-shy to draft again, though :(

I'm not a great player by any means but I should at least be hitting 3-4 wins based on how I do in Ranked. I'm not sure if I'm just missing Draft fundamentals or just hit a spell of bad luck (I went 5-3 in my first Draft).

Draft is an entirely different beast from ranked and also other digital CCGs like Hearthstone's arena. Additionally it's pretty pretty high variance in my experience.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Played some of this. Haven't finished campaign yet but I like what I see.

Some of the NPC cards are busted though. 2CMC 2/2 Empower: +1/+1 is some bullshit. Blue deck is kind of ass.

UI could be a bit more clear with regards to attack/hp, or the player portraits.

heh just wait till you see cards like Sandstorm Titan if you think that ones bad(4 mana 5/6 with Endurance AND "Units can't fly")

definitely some ridiculous cards floating around

Got a win 2 VS games in a row quest and opened up 0/2, the quest actually went to -2/2. I managed to win 4 straight after that but this has to be a bug.

This was probably my most fun draft deck to play so far

So much removal! Hope it went well!

What's not clear about attack/hp and player portraits?

What is the reward for getting 7 draft wins?

What's not clear about attack/hp and player portraits?

On the field the cards are fine, but when zoomed in having the numbers on the lower corners of the portrait instead of the whole card throws me off. Turns the portrait area too busy in my opinion.

The influence threshold could be larger as well.

For player portraits, it also gets kind of busy when a relic is equipped. You have the armor icon, the attack icon, and then a little icon at the bottom that mouses over for the weapon. I think maybe these things can just be bigger it's not like the portrait is muy important.

Also I can't help but laugh at some of the keywords like Flyng and Charge. Can't wait for WOTC and Blizzard to sue LSV.

I don't really like "Weapon" and "Relic Weapon" or "Spell" and "Fast Spell".

Also it's unfortunate they didn't build cycling into the game somehow. I can see a lot of casual players getting put off by power screw/flood.

Also what does Initiate of the Sands actually do. Does it really give you +1 power? Because that's pretty busted. However when I used it the power seemed to disappear after a turn. So it's +1 power on the next turn?

EDIT: Oh, is it +1 Power while it's alive? I get it now.

I will agree on Relics being equipped, I don't find it so bad when you have one, but when you're running multiple different ones it's a bit of a pain in the ass. The portrait does become congested when you have a few things going on.

Power screw/flood is going to happen in any game that the player isn't automatically handed a set amount of power each turn, I guess the good news is that it will also happen to your opponent as well. I do think that there's plenty of cycle available through spells, units and relics.
