It's a great time to be a fan of Japanese RPGs

FFXV and Pokemon Sun/Moon are out. Persona 5 is coming out soon. Nintendo is releasing 3DS DQ games. ATLUS is still doing well and localizations are more and more common. And SE has a few more high profile titles down the pipeline. And let's not forget Souls.

Moreover, it looks like it's a healthy market for them. And localizations are much much better than the PS1 days.

Has there ever been a time like this in the West for JRPGs? What do you feel is still missing?

I would not confine it to JRPG's. Next year is a good time for Japanese games in general

Also: looks like there will be a Xenoblade Chronicles X port for the Nintendo Switch and Monolith might tease a new Switch RPG in January. How cool is that?

We have this thread every other month, but it's nice to finally have it after a bunch of big JRPGs have released.

Pokemon is great and XV is good. Feels good. Need a truly phenomenal game to come and knock it out of the park. Looking at you Persona 5.

I think it was a lot better in most of the eras minus last gen. last gen was a nightmare for jrpg fans with souls being the only success and that wasn't a big franchise until the 3rd game in terms of sales. It's currently great as a jrpg fan to have a number of heavy hitters but hope to see support throughout this gen.
Persona 5, Nier automata and some surprise games could make 2017 a classic year of gaming.

Persona 5, Final Fantasy XV, Atelier Sophie, Odin Sphere, Pokémon Moon, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Dragon Quest VII, World of Final Fantasy, and probably a few more I've forgotten.

I've never had so many great JRPGs to enjoy in a single year.

whats missing are the sales numbers. dragon quest builders sold 300k copies in total outside of asia. I doubt world of FF will do much better.

Yeah.

Not only that, but the big titles doing well are important for the genre as a whole.

SMTIV: Apocalypse comes out tomorrow in the EU, which is great timing for me as I've just finished Trails of Cold steel II that came out earlier this month.

Couldn't be happier this year really- I've played through Bravely Second, all three campaigns of Fire Emblem Fates, Stranger of Sword City, Adventures of Mana, Trails of Cold Steel, Dragon Quest VII. Still got Odin Sphere and Grand Kingdom to start as well. Might pick up 7th Dragon too.

All that's besides the big hitters Pokemon and FFXV. Then there's DQVIII on January 20.

Hopefully it will continue for a long period: we need a Japanese console games resurgence. They are still my favorite games because they have that charm and artistic quality many of the western games lack.

I'm really looking forward to Dragon Ball Fusions and Monster Hunter Stories too.

Can't get enought of these colourful collecting JRPGs.

Those games aren't made on FFXV style budgets, 300k is probably a decent return for them. I'd also be surprised if World of Final Fantasy didn't sell more than DQ Builders

I knew it had to come out eventually.

*checks release date*

oh okay a week later in AUS

I still haven't even got around to SMT4, largely thanks to the digital only super late release, but I'll be grabbing Apocalypse because I want physical and Atlus games seem to disappear within weeks here lol.

I prefer RPGs from Japan widely because of their diversity, but high schools and FF15's J-Pop to me is the equivalent of D&D high fantasy. It's just played out and I can't stand these titles anymore. FF15 looks amazing otherwise, but the characters just constitute way too much anger and headaches for me.

I'm getting SMT4:A though tomorrow hopefully, if European retailers even receive any copies. After that, Nier 2 and Nioh are absolutely day 1.

And hoping for DQ 10 & 11 localization announcements

Easily can last me all of 2017

Edit: I can't believe I forgot Etrian Odyssey V ;_;

I'm gonna start up Moon here soon. Just need Nintendo to release my ID from and older system I sold. XV was amazing and I think I'm gonna wait for their December patch before going for the post game stuff.

I've never really been into the genre but thought with all the recent releases I should try some out.

Currently on Ch.18 of World of Final Fantasy and had a pretty fun time so far even if it's a little easy and repetitive. I was going to pick up Sun/Moon but will hold off for Stars. Once I finish uni up on the 9th I'm going to treat myself to FFXV.

Seems like a great time if you are into these types of games.

I wouldnt say great. With Persona 5 being pushed back so far FFXV alone cant erase the drought of premier console jrpgs shaking up the genre.

I'm always a bit sad when a thread like this pops up and OP only lists SE, ATLUS and Pokemon.

There is so much more out there and always has been! Good that you find games you're enjoying though, but I really don't see this time as some special JRPG renaissance.

AT LEAST mention the Trails series or something :|

I bought the CE for this game and I still haven't played it.

What's worse SO5 or Tales of Zesteria? Own both but have yet to play either.

SO5 is a million times worse. Zestiria has some redeeming qualities and can actually be enjoyable.

Really looking forward to Persona, Ys, Nioh and Nier next year. The mini-resurgence of Japanese gaming has been one of my favorite things about this gen.

This is basically how I feel.

It has been a great year for JRPGs on handhelds alone, between Trails of Cold Steel 2, Dragon Quest VII, SMT IV Apocalypse and Pokrmon Sun/Moon. Then you have gems on console like FFXV, Tokyo Mirage and soon Persona 5 and it has really been a overwhelmingly great time for JRPGs.

I certainly can't complain. Dragon Quest VII 3DS a couple months ago, Final Fantasy XV now and Dragon Quest VIII 3DS next month.

I'm hoping we get at least one of Ni no Kuni II (maybe), Dragon Quest XI (if it even gets a western release) and FFVII (lol) next year.

Off the top of my head, the ones I'm really looking forward to next year are DQVIII, Etrian Odyssey V, YsVIII and Monster Hunter Stories. Localisation announcements for the latter three would be good :D

It's never been a bad time to be a jrpg fan. I get the point of this thread of course and I agree with the sentiment, but there have been plenty of fantastic games in the last few years for anyone looking for them hard enough. But with FFXV and Persona 5 getting some mainstream love it definitely helps the perception of the genre.

Personally, Tokyo Mirage Sessions is the game that really blew my mind this year. I had no excitement for it because of the idol stuff but it ended up being my GOTY. FFXV is shaping up to be a great game as well, I've really enjoyed my first few hours with it.

We might see the handheld version of DQXI (on switch) next year but i'm pretty sure ps4 will be 2018. I wouldn't be surprised if FFVIIR is even later than that

It's always been a good time if you don't confine yourself to home console. The PSP/Vita and DS/3DS have been a haven for over a decade, carrying the torch from the PS2.
