The new Dualshock 4 model is really nice

My Black Friday Dualshock 4 arrived in the mail yesterday. The build quality is a nice step up from the original and is very noticeable.

- shoulder and touchpad buttons are more clicky and less mushy
- all glossy plastic (such as the face buttons) is gone except for the touchpad
- L3 and R3 have a nicer click to them
- touchpad has a new finish that's less of a thumb print magnet
- controller is slightly heftier

Battery life is about the same, but that's not a problem for me since i primarily use this as a PC controller where i can disable the lightbar for extra juice.

Here's the model # if anybody's interested in the new version -- CUH-ZCT2

I feel like the battery life is actually drastically improved, but it could be placebo.

Nope, it has, i use to have to charge my old ones after 3 or 4 hours of gaming, I have put in about 6hrs on rocket league this week on the same controller and its still on 1 bar.

I got a new controller with my Pro, and of the differences I was able to glean was that the touchpad was noticeably more 'loose' and wiggly, and that the Options/Share buttons required a lot more push for less of a click.

On the flip side, my original controller had an awful plastic-on-plastic grinding/creaking when putting any pressure on the D-Pad, which the new one doesn't. Which is an overall upgrade. /shrug

I was wondering this too. I'm not sure if I have the newest controller or not.

Besides the new, thin light bar added to the track pad when it is turned on, you may notice that on the new DS4 that its buttons (including L1, L2, R1, R2, Share and Options), the D-pad, and both thumbsticks are now gray instead of black.

I honestly think the battery life is improved, at least the first week of owning the Pro, I didn't have to plug in or switch controllers as often as I did with OG controllers.

I want one, but it's only available in black, dammit. The second controller I buy for a system should always be a different color than the one I got with it. My second DS3 was white.

That's great I sometimes accidentally press those too easily at times

The back comes off a lot easier to swap out thumbsticks too, way less likely to jostle the triggers loose which is nice for quick stick replacements.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Pro is my first PS4, but are the options and share buttons incredibly sunken in on the OG DS4 too ?

That's about the only gripe I have with the controller so far.

They aren't. It was changed with the new controller.

The best improvement is the triggers. They are massively more durable than the original model. The whole mechanism is different. Sticks are improved as well.

Early reports had said that the controller was almost exactly the same parts as the original with a window put in the touchpad to let the existing lightbar show through.

Then I took it apart and found that the shell is slightly different, it assembles a little differently, the board inside is a new revision with a few bits repositioned, and the revised lightbar is also a new piece.

It may not offer any new features or major performance differences but it is definitely new hardware nonetheless.

I switched from launch PS4 to Pro, and DS4 battery life is much better for me.

The battery life on my new DS4 is way better than my old one. Maybe my old one just had a faulty battery but it is definitively improved in my case. I was about 5 hours into gameplay and out of habit I checked the battery level expecting to need a charge and it still had a couple bars. I was surprised.

When I opened it up the battery appeared to be the same which left me scratching my head. Maybe the new hardware is just more energy efficient.

They seem the same. Differences purely aesthetic to me. Keep in mind that they've stealth updated a bunch of stuff over the past few years.

One thing I noticed though is The rubber on the thumbsticks seem similar to the rubber on my launch. In contrast to my uc4 ds4 which has harder/rougher plastic that seem to have less grip. I actually like this. Hopefully this doesn't mean they wear the same.

The new one has a little "strip" inside the touchpad, near the top, that lights up when the controller is on.

vs the old one which... does not.

It also lets you set the controller settings in devices to use the wired for data communication, whereas the old one is always over bluetooth even if its wired to the console.

And I agree with OP, its really nice compared to the previous two iterations (the launch one which had some quality issues and a "hidden" refresh which fixed that).

I believe the only colors you can get the new one are black, red (magma), and I think silver, gold, and maybe one of the camos? Stuff like the Uncharted one, blue, 20th anniversary, etc are still always the revision 1 model.

I'd also recommend something like the kontrol freek thumb covers, adds a bit more height to them and made them way more comfy for me. I bought mine in gamestop

Interesting idea:

The new DS4 supports USB communications.

Someone should test this model specifically with a PS3. Is vibration function/home button support finally working after all these years?

I refuse to get an older model now after getting the newer one with my ps4 pro. I like the light bar on top of the touch pad and the rumble is more intense as well.

Could just be natural battery wear on the old one rather than differences between new models of each?

Your average electronics may hit 80% original capacity in 300 cycles, 64% in 600, etc.

The old one had USB communication also, for some reason the PS4 just disables it. I use it all the time on multiple PCs (no bluetooth).

Yup, this is a nice little feature. I have my PS4 Pro in the same room as my PC and avoiding any Bluetooth competition with the Vive's hardware is helpful.

The softer plastic is the most noticeable improvement to me. Made the old controller feel cheap.

My sticks are a little stiff and make a bit of noise when you first move them off axis, but I'll chalk that up to needing to "break them in" for a while.

So how many revisions have there been? Is this the first significant update, or have there been others?
