The new Dualshock 4 model is really nice

They really didn't improve it enough. Better sticks more like the XB1 controller would be a huge improvement. The cheap slippery rubber they use feels poor in comparison. The first thing I did was put some XB1 sticks on it. Plus the plastic used on the triggers feels cheap and low quality.

In terms of shape and ergonomics the DS4 is my favourite controller ever but I just wish it had better materials.

Are these improvements only over the launch controllers or are they above and beyond even the newer redesigned ones like my 20th anniversary one (apart from the light bar of course which is a brand new feature)?

My 20th Anniversary controller has great battery life and the sticks haven't deteriorated at all and that's with a lot of intense Rocket League play (which was the game that killed the sticks on my original launch controllers).

Are the bumpers any more durable? That's my main concern. I had three bumpers on three different controllers get mushy and sticky at launch. I sold my PS4 over it, but I'd like to get a Pro now that TLOU2 is announced (not to mention all the games I've missed).

So how many revisions have there been? Is this the first significant update, or have there been others?

There were minor revisions to the original model. Thumb sticks, trigger springs, and other minor internal stuff. No major revisions that would be externally visible, not much very notable to the consumer besides more resilient sticks.

This is a larger revision than there has been previously. Most would colloquially refer to this as V2, though in reality it might be something like v4.

didnt someone do a teardown and verify that the battery capacity was the same?

No teardown necessary. This was confirmed via FCC filing before release. However, a higher capacity cell isn't always necessary for a longer battery life. Clearly the light function has been modified somewhat.

I get better battery life with mine, but it could just be the batteries in my older controllers aren't holding a charge like they used to.

I really dislike the thin blue strip that now exists on the touch pad.

Anyone else feel this way?

Any way to disable this? If not what would be the best method of hiding it?

Same battery, same meh controller.

Bought a red one on BF. It's alright.

Always prefered X1 because I hate same-axis analogs, and comparing to my Elite isn't even fair to be honest.

It uses the same battery, I have assumed it's just a lot more efficient since it lasts a few hours longer than my older model.

There are many factors that can come into play; It seems better but my WiiU Pro controller still lasted days longer.

cover it with a black piece of tape haha i do something similar with my cable modem leds because they are annoyingly bright

The thumbsticks on my new model (not the latest one) are MUCH more durable than the launch one which deteriated so fast.

But now I hear some kind of sound when the vibration goes, which is driving me mad

Set your DS4 light bar to dim from the settings menu. I like the light strip - I never saw any purpose for the light in the back since my eyes never caught a glimpse of it and therefore I would never know what color the game was trying to convey. This modification makes sense.

Still curious about a PS3 plug in test. It would make so much sense to have it work properly with the system via USB. The dual shock 3 is just too hard to go back to.

Where do you live that red version of the new model was available in November?

I bought second black one for $33(amazing deal) that I plan to sell unopened as soon as some other colors drop.

This is probably also true, with my first DS4 I have to charge it maybe every couple of days, but this one last me some three days playing like 3 hours maybe 2 a day.

It's also available in red and blue iirc.

Yeah that's right. I have the blue one and have seen the red one in stores. The color of the back half of the controller have changed too on the new revision. It's now red-on-red and blue-on-blue, instead of it being red-on-black/blue-on-black.

Electrical tape? or like black colored duct tape?

Appreciate the advice. :)

Yeah, I have it set to the most dim setting and it's still really bothersome.

As nice as it is it still didn't stop me from swapping the sticks out with Xbox one sticks after a day!

I feel like the battery life is actually drastically improved, but it could be placebo.

I totally agree. I used to have to charge my Golds and DS4 at the same rate. Now after a few hours my headset has 2/3 battery left and the new DS4 is still basically full. They're no longer sync'd.

Anyone have the new controller occasionally disconnect? My older controllers are fine. Happens maybe twice a week

Someone else might be able to chime in better but I think mine was electrical. It was a super old roll so I liked it because it wasn't super adhensive and wouldn't leave a ton of residue to clean-up. I'm not sure if that applies to a new roll.

Yeah it is nice. I just got my new red DS4 in the mail today that I ordered on cyber monday and can tell that it is different than the one I got boxed in my PS4.

I played Final Fantasy almost 18h a day over the Weekend (or at least the game ran for 18 hours. Of course I cooked and ate and stuff). Only charged it while sleeping. So no, the battery is in my Opinion not the same. It's pretty good now with the new controller.

Does your red DS4 have the light bar in front?

Waiting for them to add usable triggers.

edit: And usable thumbsticks. Up the the battery life as well.

3 years later they finally made a DS4 that doesn't feel like it will crumble in my hands. Just a shame I can't get the PS1 themed anniversary controller in this new style.

Yes they did a complete revision of the bumpers a year ago.

Og controllers were/garbage fell apart. From everything from the sticks to the bumpers.

I always thought the controller was very pleasing aesthetically, but the new greyish and matte colors combined with the frontal light strip just make it beautiful.

However what seals the deal for me is how it feels to the touch. The texture of basically everything has been tweaked and I like how it feels in the hand much better than the cheap plastic feeling it had before.

It's changed in a lot of very subtle ways for the most part but I do agree that it sums up to feeling noticeably more refined overall.

Was not expecting that one bit when I made my Pro purchase.

However, I only get about an hour or an hour and a half of extra battery out of it, so it's not a drastic improvement. Again, a subtle and welcome improvement but I don't think anyone should rush to buy one on hopes of battery life improvement alone.

The sticks are made of a tougher rubber material that feels much higher quality but is less pliable and thus doesn't grip my thumb as well as the old version. Compromise, I suppose.

My controller is heavily creaking. Can even feel the handles moving. It's the controller which came with the Pro.
I think i just had bad luck.

the matte finish is much better. those glossy areas on the old version got scratched to hell just cleaning with a micro fiber cloth (just like the og ps4 plate).

might be due to how its screwed together. maybe try loosening it up

The Dpad has a more of a texture to it as well which feels much better. I prefer the gray sticks and Dpad to the black of the original, too.

Already tried everything with the screws :(
Didn't changed anything.
