It shouldn't be. As long as the mobo is up to scratch, the M.2 SSD will look like just another hard drive to the Windows install. You can run into some issues with the mobos that have two M.2 slots, as one tends to be NVME and the other SATA. Just make sure to read the manual and use the specific NVME slot.

It's a ASUS Z170-A. All I know is that what I saw on the internet suggested it would be a pain in the ass to get it to recognize the M.2 drive as a boot drive.

It's not my first build, but my knowledge of setting up configs mostly revolves around what I can find a YouTube for to explain to me.

So I just "upgraded" from a G500S to a G502. My god. I hate this mouse.

The ergonomics are just completely wrong for my hand. And for some reason, it's pretty much incompatible with hard mouse pads. It grinds so hard against my hard func pad...I had to switch out to a cloth pad.

Yeah, it came boxed like that but it didn't come with the bag. I got it from Newegg as part of one of their DIY bundles (I'm building it for someone that needed a Windows computer for their small business). I tried calling them this morning and was on hold for a while before I hung-up and then sent them a text and still waiting for a reply. It has been three hours already.

So I was finally able to get in touch with newegg but they basically told me that they can't do anything and that I have to contact the manufacturer. Can I use screws from a different case or go buy some from a hardware store? I just want to get the damn thing built

Is there a version of the PG279Q without G-sync? I bought one and love it, and I've been thinking about buying a second monitor to match it, but I don't really want to pay the gsync premium. I know the PG278 has a non-gsync version, but that's a TN panel and I'm looking for an IPS 1440p monitor (preferably the same monitor, I enjoy having a high refresh rate even when just normally using Windows, feels way better when moving the mouse around).

Maybe check out the MG279Q. It's basically the freesync version of the PG monitor I think (but don't quote me). A fair bit cheaper I believe.

Thanks so much! Still a bit pricier than I was hoping, but it might be worth getting an open box model or purchasing on sale. Else I'll just settle for a different decent IPS monitor, since I currently only use my second monitor sporadically (partly because I don't need it very often, partly because I hate looking at it).

Yes screws from another case should work. If not just go the the hardware store.

Some motherboards have diagnostic lights (or LED displays) that can tell you if something is wrong. Can you check to see if yours does?

I would be inclined to check all cable/power connections, detach anything unnecessary, and if needed, reset the CMOS. Don't know how comfortable you are with this stuff though.

That or just call NCIX, or wait for other people to chime in. Boot loops were common when I was overclocking too much, but I doubt that's your problem. What are the specs by the way?

I put together a new build recently with the asus maximus viii hero. Roommate had its predecessor. Just have to say its UEFI completely blew me away, after years of dealing with a crotchety old Gigabyte BIOS. Easy to put together too, components and connectors were all in places that made sense. The settings and menus go on for days but if you just want to get a stable overclock up and running it's easy. I'd always used budget or price/performance motherboards in the past and I gotta say this one was worth it so far. I've got no experience with MSI motherboards though, just throwing in my 2 cents.

I was going to wait on the 7700k but black friday sales pushed me over. And its benchmarks are only justifying my decision not to wait. If I lived in the US I might have waited for Zen but I went for the safe bet of getting everything as cheaply as I could before the canadian dollar gets any worse. And betting on AMD isn't something I'm willing to do anymore.

If your just doing a reformat, you won't need the key. Windows 10 is hooked to your Microsoft account.

OK, I need some help with a new build.

Specs:

CPU: i7 6700k
Motherboard: ga-z170xp-sli
RAM: gskill ripjaw 3000
PSU: Thermaltake 750watt CPU
SDD Harddrive

So, everything is set up in the tower, but when I boot the system it restarts and goes into a continual boot loop. The machine doesn't even make it to the bios, it just restarts. All of the connections are in place, everything looks correct, but I can't troubleshoot this.

This is a recommended motherboard in the OP and I would like to know if anyone has had this same issue?

I have a very similar board(Mpower Gaming titanium), and it is awesome.

The new intel 7000 series cpus and z270 motherboards are supposed to come out in January.

So far it's not looking like the 7000 series cpus are going to be worth waiting(and paying more for):

Granted, if you need one of the new features in the Z270 chipset, then maybe there is an argument to be made, but I don't think most people are going to notice a substantial difference.

This was my first using an mATX board in a smaller case, and I have to say, it was kind of a pain to build. I made the mistake of installing the heatsink before connecting the 8-pin CPU power cable, and getting that in made me want to tear my hair out. The case I chose doesn't have the best cable management, so my cables aren't as neat as I'd like, but it'll do (ended up being pretty much all-black, though, which is cool). I do kind of dread having to open this thing up in the future for upgrades. That said, it's running fine so far, and it's really nice to have a gaming-capable PC again. Time to get to work on that backlog.

Yes, that one, and it does have an m.2 connector. I run SLI and it will have just enough PCI lanes to run an NVMe SSD, but I don't have one yet. I was waiting for the same one you linked...which has been MIA for a long time. I've heard that today was when they were supposed to start shipping, actually.

And yeah I was going to wait on z270/7700k but I can't stress enough how bad prices can get for new hardware here. I'm not paying 50% more for the same performance as the stuff I picked up on black friday sales. If you're paying USD I'm sure it's a bit more reasonable.

I've fixed most of the initial problems with my new build and my hard drive has been working flawlessly ever since it failed and I formatted, so I'm gonna ride it out a few weeks.

But now I'm having a problem with my sound. Every once in a while the sound will just cut out.

If I'm playing a game, it will cut out and never come back.

If I'm playing an audio file via Windows Media Player, it will stop playing and give me an error message.

If I'm watching a Twitch stream, it will freeze.

If I reload the game/webpage/file, it will work fine for a while until the next blip occurs. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Pretty overkill, but it's a great cooler. TBH almost anything will get you over 4ghz.. the D15 is great when you want to push it, e.g. 4.6GHz or higher.

If you're only going to mildly overclock maybe just buy a cheaper cooler and save the money for your next GPU upgrade.

2) My baby is due in 3 weeks, so I can't blow tons of cash on water cooled systems anymore.

I only keep mobo and GPU boxes, chuck everything else.

If you flatten them, they take up way less room. Just helps to keep them in case of either an RMA or if you sell them when you upgrade.

Just booted Forza Horizon 3 and was greeted with a "can´t check for updates" message.

Went to the Microsoft Store to check for updates aaaaaand nothing.

Don´t get an error message or anything - there´s simply nothing happening although I know there are updates.

Rebooting the PC AND the router did nothing.

What could be my problem?

If it's installed on Steam, no you don't have to. Just use steam mover to get it to the new folder/drive.

Yeah, I just did some searches and apparently that series of ASUS mobos ain't the greatest when it comes to M.2 support. Disappointing.

I saw a couple videos and guides that explain how to do it, but its apparently not just plug and play. You have to fiddle with shit. I'm fine with that as long as I figure it out eventually.

That said, the videos I saw suggest that M.2 drives are fiddly as fuck on practically every mobo. I suspect its kind of wave of the future stuff that will get worked out in future generations to be less of a hassle. But I want those sweet, sweet startup times, so I bit the bullet and went with a 950 Pro (there's supposed to be a 960 Evo/Pro coming out sometime soon but god knows when and I haven't seem much that suggests its a big enough performance increase to bother with).

I know this wasn't for me, but I do appreciate you composing this list. I keep saying all the time, that I am going to stop buying consoles. I am just going to build a gaming PC, but then I go buy a PS4, and will probably buy the Nintendo Switch. However, I am saying it again, LOL. The Switch is the last console that I am going to buy. I just rather invest in a gaming PC!!

I've built PCs before, just never for myself. This is a good starting point, but I can invest a higher budget around the $1500-$2000 range. I would like to run to run 4K on the highest settings. The thing is that I am not going to buy parts all at once. It'll probably be one part or two a month, you know family and bills, so I can't justify spending all at once. I'll use this list as a base, and upgrade where I see fit. I'll keep GAF posted, and ask for help when I need it.
