I was not joking at all. Thunderbolt Fantasy deserves every bit of attention it gets.

I'm pretty sure you've read more of both those authors than I have (since I've read exactly none), so then you should find it more believable than I do!

Do make sure to keep it that way.

Into my veins.

Orange 10-13 END
A decent enough denoument for a show that I can't quite articulate why I dislike outside of the mediocre technical side. I guess Naho & Kakeru never grew up in my eyes to be interesting characters and a lot of their interactions smacked of some awkward shoujo ? Something like that.

Like, do you guys understand the real benefit of AOTY after their respective years are over? It's to have a convenient repository of shows to look back on and recommend to others. The actual prestige involved is a minor concern, except for cracking jokes about how X series was robbed.

That's true, unless Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt wins.

Yes except for when P&S wins that's just a travesty.

Never forget.

BUT. For the purpose of AOTY, "anime" is defined as "something exceptional and precious enough that the esteemed members of the AnimeGAF thread would deem worthwhile to discuss in some form." So yes, Thunderbolt Fantasy is absolutely anime.

Currently my list looks like this:
1.Thunderbolt fantasy
2.Concret revolutio
3.Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
4.Boku no Hero Academia
5.Ushio to Tora
6.Akagami no Shirayuki-hime
7.Mob Psycho 100
8.Re:Zero
9.Amanchu!
10.Uchuu Patrol Luluco

It still a work in progress and I still need to watch a few shows as well as catching up with Twin Star Exorcists and March comes in like a lion.

Panty and Stocking fucking owns
Agreed! Just the infuse of personality from the eclectic talent involved for each crazy segment gave it enough prestige.

Having said that, the recency of the final episode when airing so close to the end of the year, coupled with the sudden (and obviously kind of playful) closure it had definitely helped the series achieve that rank on the poll... "ruining Christmas" sure has its perks when you left viewers so in shock it makes them retain a memory of the show so fresh! :-D

You should conduct AotYs five years after the event by which point there'll only be about ten titles that anyone even remembers from back then.

Which ironically means Panty & Stocking would still be on the list lol

Now on one hand, I have to commend the film for making the four main leads pretty good characters in their own right. They all act and emote in ways that consistently believable, and they rarely fall too heavily into an archetypal role. (The voice actress for Naruse did a particularly good job in my opinion.) At the time, I can't escape the feeling the film is pretty flat. I don't feel the film builds upon its quiet drama terribly well, and it just kind of ends. Maybe that's because the film in its efforts to avoid over the top drama also keeps a lot in the background? I didn't quite get a good feel for what Takumi's struggles were exactly.

I felt almost the opposite, in that I felt like the film toyed a little too much with over the top drama, particularly at the climax in the abandoned hotel - though considering it came from the Ano Hana team it was still admirably restrained. I found the musical performance itself, particularly the dual-melody song, rather moving and a good way to sum up the film. I'm not sure what you're looking for from Takumi; he didn't have particularly big trauma, just a problem with not expressing himself when doing so would have made things better for his relationships with others.

Everything ties together then.

I feel like the film did a good job of avoiding over the top drama by, generally, doing a good job of showing why people were avoiding each other. As for the climax, while it was one of the more tropey aspect of the film, it also had
Naruse confess her feelings, get gently rebuffed, and had the two characters accept it seemingly without feeling slighted.
I was honestly surprised at how quickly they accepted it, maybe a little too quickly.

Show By Rock S2 - 12

Wow, the animation budget took a hit during the second half of this show. You'd think they'd have saved some for the final, but nope, the characters looked wonky right up until the end. Did Mob Psycho 100 use up Bone's complete bank account?

I know that somehow P&S won that year, but now that I see the list, that year also saw the release of motherfucking Tatami Galaxy. WTF Gaf.

The vote was held halfway through the following year and it was the first time ever.

So it was basically a rookie mistake. 2011 was the first real Anime of the Year vote.

The lists are filled with landmines, so pushing people towards the results as some kind of reference for what is good is less than useful. It also seems increasingly obvious that smaller or more niche animation projects are just not breaking through on the collective list. Having stuff like Thunderbolt Fantasy on there just contributes to boxing stuff out and it feels especially needless when it doesn't belong on the list to begin with.

Thunderbolt Fantasy is the niche project.

And no one just points to the list and goes "have at it". The way it's done is people usually select from the list and if it ranks high then casual watchers are more likely to check it out. If it was purely a showcase of anime then we wouldn't even have broad appeal shounen shows everyone's already seen/heard of.

Blast of tempest 1-4

So when I watched the first episode I wasn't too sure if I would really like it because the MC's personalities weren't that great and fitting with what I like, but as of episode 4 they have kind of grown on me. So yea, I'm enjoying it! Loving the character designs a bunch and the battles are very cool. No really stand out ost so far though.

I'm also not really fond of the OP, but I really like the ED! The mix of the colours and the music go really well together.

Thunderbolt Fantasy is the niche project.
I mean...niche in the sense that all of these shows are niche I guess. There is definitely stuff that lives in a more obscure place that falls through the cracks like the Animator Expo stuff from last year.

Oh right, I was supposed to finish Girlish Number too, on top of Great Passage and making a go at Battery.

That Khara/Tsurumaki/Expo tooth thing is gonna be released this Winter now that I look at the relevant part of the chart.

We can take solace in that even if the AOTY list won't be 100% perfect, I'm sure as hell it will be better than this top 5 I just read in a Spanish site:

1. March comes like a Lion
2. Occultic Nine
3. Bungou Stray Dogs
4. Erased
5. Kabaneri

I'm not a fan of putting on going anime on your list, unless it's a series going on for years.

Eh, nothing can be worse than Kabaneri being nominated for most of the awards on the Crunchyroll Awards. Normally don't care what others do with their "best of" lists, it's just a list, but it's the only site where I see Kabaneri getting any love at all. Wonder what the panel was thinking with that.
