This Comiket was my Austerlitz. I'm so fucking done with anime and don't want to do anything nerd related in my entire life again.

I think they broke another record this year.

The Yuri on Ice OP feels unfinished and has no crescendo. I have no idea why they voted for it so hard

It specifically says best theme, not best opening.

Still, if you're going to put "History Maker" (Yuri on Ice) above "Lay Your Hands on Me" (Kiznaiver)" I'm still going to disagree with that!

Finally did my AOTY vote. The first 4 places were more or less decided, but after that... more or less any of the shows I listed could have been on any position. God.

Also, another year to vote for Gintama even though it won't win anything. Yeah!

Summers in Japan are super hot, super hot, super hot.

The climate is a stand itself.

I read it goes up to 35C which is kind of normal during a summer for where I live, hell, it even goes up to 45 here

Kuromukuro 10-11

The show is now teasing on some revelations(which amounted to nothing much) but it didn't quite have my interest as much as Akagi's side of the story. He is serious about becoming a pilot but evidently he isn't nearly as mentally or physically capable of it. I am interested in seeing where this goes.

Will he surprise us or remain a joke.

Sound Euphonium 2 - 12-13

It was alright in the end.

Could have used more Kumiko reaction faces/10

Yeah, I'm going through S1 and this struck me.

Sound! Euphonium 2 – Episode 13 END ;_;
- THIS IS MY PRESIDENT YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Yuko is such a good choice for band president. She's just got the makings of such a good leader, and watching her personality get fleshed out this season was an absolute treat. She definitely ended up becoming one of my favorites, and to see her get here is such an awesome place for her to end up. Now wait till she gets an adorable kouhai that worships her, haha.
- NATSUKI AS VP! YEESSSSS! This is the best pairing. Not only do they work well together, but I just love their dichotomy SO MUCH. Her acceptance and deadpan towards Yuko being a hothead about is is too cute. I'll take a season 3 of just those two running the band for a year, please.
They're indeed a joy to watch.

Look at Kaori when Reina plays the solo. Look at Yuko smiling. Totally different from where we were at the end of season 1, and even episode 5. The dispassionate look is gone, finally replaced with a smile. The whole background animosity over that part, and how they felt each time it was played just still hits me so hard.

I take it you're talking just about Yuuko in the latter part of this ? Kaori behaved saintlike in the whole situation from what I remember.

I feel like I could gush for hours about how much I loved the whole series, but i'll spare you that! I definitely want to go back and revisit some of my other episode reviews from season 1 if I can find the time, and rewrite those to have a lot more information. I didn't get really into doing these till almost halfway through season 1, and I honestly feel like the material deserves a better write-up. Couple that with where things ended up, and a re-watch sounds like a fantastic idea too.

Last but not least, thank you to everyone who encouraged me to do these write-ups! When you showed me that I helped you see things you would've otherwise missed, coupled with my love for the show, I realized I wanted to help as many people come to love and appreciate the series like I do. Coming home from work every Wednesday night to write these up, then edit through the week was a comforting ritual in my life, and something I always looked forward to. I also really enjoyed the writeups and translations pertaining to Euphonium every week from kViN and ultimatemegax over at Sakuga Blog. There's a ton of good stuff to read there, so you should check it out!

I wholeheartedly love all of Sound! Euphonium. Kyoani did an absolutely fantastic job, and I love that I was given the opportunity to get to know this work through their herculean, meticulous efforts to bring it to life in such an incredible way that only really they could do. It's definitely a series that's very special to me, and I will always cherish it in that special place I have reserved for it in my heart.

Your effort devoted to these was kinda awe inducing. They've been always a treat to read even if the musical aspect of the series never exactly spoke to me too much. Thanks.

Although I don't watch as much anime these days, I do keep an ear out for the music occasionally and it's not been a vintage year in terms of OPs and EDs for me (there's been some excellent animation, though, which makes up for it.

I've only bought the following:

Yuri on Ice - History Maker (OP)
I still think the Eurobeat is a bit of a mistake, but I love the xylophone and the strings in the chorus; I also think it's very effective at capturing the tone of the show; it feels like it's got some of the grandeur that the ice skating routines evoke (the show's OST is outstanding in its variety, incidentally, even if some of it is a bit naff).

Battery - Ashita, Haru ga Kitara (ED)
It's saying something that this is just a pop cover that sounds almost identical to its original version, but it's a classic - it's like the female version of Mr Children's Tomorrow Never Knows.

Amanchu! - Million Clouds (OP)
I'm a long time Maaya fan; I'm grateful and perhaps a bit surprised she's still doing anime themes. This isn't one of my favourites but at least she's still putting out tracks that don't sound like every other anison on the market. I also really like the lyrics - they're quite sweet and poetic.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress - ninelie (ED)
I know, I know, we're all contractually obliged to hate Sawano. I don't (well, sometimes - I'm not always a fan of his scores, and a lot of what he writes for male voices is boring Nickelback-esque rock). I love his overly melodramatic pop barnstormers, even if they're lyrical nonsense, and ninelie is just brilliant - the man can certainly write a chorus. This is probably my favourite anison of the year...

The Asterisk War - Ai no Uta -words of love- (ED2)
I thought I was going to love this after I heard the TV size version of it - I really, really like Rasmus Faber's work in general, and Waiting For The Rain was a gorgeous ED for the first season. I kind-of feel the chorus is a bit underwhelming here and the song doesn't really increase in complexity in the way I hope it will each time I listen to it.

Outside of anime, there was a decent game OP from kokia, and I will admit to being rather fond of World of Final Fantasy's OP, but I've not really heard much that's caught my interest.

History Maker probably gets an added amount of attention because it uses an unusual musical style for anime OP songs as well as a singer who can actually sing English. I'm not really big on the song though; within its chosen style it feels fairly generic. From a strictly musical perspective, my favorite OP songs from 2016 are Megumi Hayashibara's Usurahi Shinju from Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu followed by Boom Boom Satellites' Lay Your Hands on Me.

Didn't you have roads melting as well. That's not normal :p

I personally haven't seen such a thing but it's probably not a surprise.

oh completely forgot about that, lovely song

History Maker along with YoI's ice skating theme is very nice but the OP overall feels lacking.

While I can't say I'm a huge fan of Boom Boom Satellites as some others here, OP had very cool visuals.

2.My Hero Academia
3.Flip Flappers
4.Concrete Revolution
5.Re:Zero OP 2

Best ED:
1.Concrete Revolution
2.Mop Psycho 100
3.Flip Flappers

Can't remember any other ED so they can't be that good.

Yeah, I'm bit torn on Mob Psycho OP too cause technically it's just majestic but I'm not all that fond of the song.

Soukyuu no Fafner: Right of Left

...

;_;

Capping it off with that was just a low blow goddamit. A low blow I say !

----

What can I say, this was an improvement almost all across the board. The direction, visuals, dialogue, pretty much all of it. Even knowing it get's better it was still bit of a shock that there was a not awful Fafner thing playing out before my eyes

. The story sadly suffers a lot from being awfully compressed into its 50 minutes of run time, even with the kind of chronicle-like take on the second half. As such some scenes just don't work all that well cause the story is already jumping into another one. Even with those limitations, I've grown to like Yumie and Ryou 10000 times more than anyone in the previous cast, so that tearjerker ending kinda hit hard. Haaaaard. (and you pretty much know how this all is going to end from the beginning.) Hopefully everyone of the original cast chokes on bags of yellow goo in the first eps of Exodus
so Ubukata will have no choice but to bring them back.

When will we be free of Saber?
Hopefully never!

No idea what thos Apocrypha, Last Encore things are ? Surely even TypeMoonites wallets can't take this.
Fate/Apocrypha is a Light novel series that came out several years ago. Set in a parallel universe from fate/stay night and fate/zero.

Fate/extra: Last Encore is an anime based on the Fate/Extra PSP video game that also came out several years ago. It is related to the Fate/stay night universe but is different as well. So some of the characters in it are the same, though they are different in some respects.(No Shirou is not in it)

5 Fate anime shows. They are making sure that if you didn't like Fate then, you will hate it now.

I'm still probably gonna watch them all though, because I am too weak.

To be fair, it's one TV anime this year, 2 movies, and an anime next year. Provided Shaft doesn't delay Last Encore again lol

The Grand Order anime is just a special that ended, and who knows when the next one will be out.

But yeah, things are going to go into overdrive with the Fate stuff.

Was hoping Thunderbolt Fantasy would win, but it seems that not enough people have seen it. Shame. Finding it hard to fill out my top 10 this year too. The stuff I liked I really liked (Rakugo/Thunderbolt Fantasy/Mov Psycho) but I dropped so many shows its come back to hurt me.

Had no idea of it but it looks awesome. From what I've seen this year Mob Pyscho is the clear winner for me.
