This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.
From the 17.5 million new PS4 owners.

The first 3 sold 21 million combined, the first one sold like shit though so most of those were 2 and 3.

Last year they had 17.4 million new owners, and the software number was much smaller.

The increase is really fantastic.

Edit: Fuzzy math

Man it wasn't all that long ago that Uncharted was considered a B tier franchise compared to the sales of Halo and Gears

Times have certainly changed

So while some people in NPD threads told us to believe that PS4 was making terrible mistakes and slowing down, the console is yet again up YoY worldwide.

Terrible decisions indeed.

As we all know, NPD threads are ONLY about the US of A. November sales were down on 2015, so December will be more important to see if holiday sales across both month are down, flat or up YoY in NA.

PS4 sold 17.5M units in 2016, up from 17.4M in 2015.
Would have expected better given Slim and Pro, but at least it's not a decline. Also stronger competiton from Xbox this year.

And it seems digital is now a serious chunk of the sales, those are healthier software numbers than the retail reports would suggest.

Those things were sold out all through the holidays...at least at bestbuy. I wonder this too

Think I heard here on GAF somewhere, they were expecting to be able to supply much more units, but some last minute issue in manufacturing the screens, cut their supplies drastically. So maybe its selling less than they forcasted. Not sure how accurate that info is.

Can you align to FY rather than CY please, Welfare?

Those are the sell through numbers so I can only do shipment numbers by FY.

April 2013 to March 2014 Sold In: 7.5M
April 2014 to March 2015 Sold In: 14.8M
April 2015 to March 2016 Sold In: 17.7M

April 2016 to March 2017 Sold In is incomplete as we only have 2 quarters, but that equals 7.4M

Fair play but even still it's really impressive, because by all accounts Q4 titles were down YoY. That means there must have been a ton of back catalog purchases

Not necessarily, maybe software sales were more spread around this year instead of concentrating on the top 5 like last year, kinda like the PS1 and 2 days. That, alongside a much bigger catalog and a bigger digital share should explain it.

Kaz did say it's selling well during the conference. Will expand beyond gaming which was expected for it

Even if somebody did not want to keep it longer term for monthly games and multiplayer, getting one of the bundles that were available and buying discounted PSN games with PS+ could net you a system and half a dozen games without breaking the bank. I am glad everything is hitting mainstream pricing way faster this generation. Best bundle in 2009 was $299.99 with inFamous and Killzone 2. Even accounting for an $18 temp subscription, the remaining $32 can get you great stuff on PSN. It isn't exactly Steam, but it is still a big improvement.

I wonder which first party game will have a bigger launch: God of War or TLOU2?

God of War III is still bigger than all Naughty Dog launches.

The point is that those 'terrible decisions' take into account the whole world and the profit on the company, even if the result is a few hundred K less consoles sold in a country, as big at it is.

That's because people were only looking at sales from one part of the world. Uncharted sales were only b-tier for the first game.

Yep I remember those days. I wonder what the latest gears/halo sold. I don't remember any solid #s. Halo is probably still killing it but gears thooo. I'm curious.

launch God of War
overall sales The Last of Us 2

God of War is more Playstation hardcore fanbase stuff
The Last of Us is "causal hardcore gamer" stuff

just my personal opinion on that matter

Thanks Welfare, much appreciated.

Do you think they'll meet the 20mn shipped target for FY 16/17?

So they need to ship 7m until the 31st of March.

They'll fall short of that 60 million, but that could have possibly been the high end estimate anyway. Either way. They are hitting 70million plus this year. PS4 will be had for 200 around the holiday. This year should be good for the Industry.
