I like the Phantom Menace

With Rogue One out and Star Wars being hip again I did a marathon of all the other Star Wars films and it really hit me that I had a fun time watching TPM. And I'm ok with that!

Phantom Menace is probably the most universally reviled movie that I genuinely like. Not in a guilty pleasure or ''it's so bad it's good'' way. And it's not even that I'm a diehard Star Wars/Prequel Trilogy fan. I don't like Attack of the Clones at all or even Rogue One particularly and now that I watched the movies again I think I'm starting to warm up to TPM being just as enjoyable or even better than ROTS. Then again I'm kind of an oddball with OT trilogy too since Empire is my least favourite of the 3 and supposedly it's widely considered the best. As for what my favourite SW film is I can't really choose between A New Hope and Jedi.

Anyhoo back to PM. It's hard to put into words why I like it. I feel it has some of the same charm original movies had from little things that lacks in the other prequel. Seeing something as simple as the clunky Trade Federation alien lip movement just warms my heart more than any CGI jedi battle from AOTC could (btw Puppet PM Yoda>CGI!). There is a ton of CGI in the film but it still feels much more restrained compared to Clones and Sith that look too clean almost all the time. That's probably one reason why I like Phantom Menace so much, it looks great without feeling too fake. It feels like an actual world again.

The biggest issue people have with the movie I think are the characters and I do agree, it's the reason why I would never actually argue it being a great movie despite me liking it. But as weird as it is this is one of the few times I would say style can be as important as substance. For example Liam Neeson as Qui Gon isn't exactly the most interestingly written character but it's impossible for me to not like him. Just his presence alone is enough to sell me on the character. I'd take Qui Gon as a lead over any of the characters in Rogue One or Anakin. I like Darth Maul because of the design alone! He has a total of one line in the movie and it doesn't really bother me, in fact it would have been more interesting if he actually didn't say a word compared to this one throwaway line. And then there is of course Jar Jar and Young Anakin. They are undeniably bad but I don't really mind them so much that it hurts the movie for me. The worst scenes with them are quite short so it's not a struggle to sit trough.

Oh, and of course it goes without saying that the sound desing and music is GOAT.

So yeah, I won't argue it's a good flick but I had fun watching it. Anyone else with me or should I be sent to the plaaaanet coooore?

I watched it again last week as well. It's a fun movie. I always enjoy it, and I concur that the score is incredible.

So this seems like the right time to mention that I like the Phantom Menace and actually prefer it over Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Of course it's sill worse than Rogue One, New Hope, Empire, RoJ and FA.

I just felt that Phantom had better acting (Qui-Gon), better dialogue, and Darth Maul. George should've never killed of Qui-Gon and Maul in the first movie. Yeah, Jar Jar is horrible, but still somehow better than Anakin/Padme romance.

It's cool. You're young and were young then if a word like "nostalga" can come into play. I'm sure watching it as a young child it would have been fun. Watching it as a young adult was an awful experience for me and mine.

There's some cool ideas, a really admirable effort at world-building and set/costume design, and like you say, I do like that it sticks with practical effects for a lot of things, but man, those first 40 minutes are such a drag. The movie just takes too long to feel like it's really getting started and by then it's basically over.

It's still better than the rest, and that's the point here unfortunately.

I just watched that and episode II for the first time (watching episode III tomorrow). CG aside it was better than I expected. Outside of the final battle scenes in episode II I thought it was a lot better. The scenes with Padme and Anakin are just too terrible.

I hear episode III is the most enjoyable even from those who hate the prequels so I'm looking forward to it. I've only watched the originals once like 10 years ago so those are next.

You're fine OP. Roger Ebert loved it too. As did a lot of other critics. And fans, judging by the silly huge box office.

I'll argue that Episode 1 was the "best" of the prequels, but I still think it was an absolutely terrible film.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I agree. It's weird, I can think of a lot of other ways to write a better origin story for Darth Vader, and I can't help but think "what the hell were they thinking" throughout every view of this movie these days, but I also agree with most of what you said. Judged entirely on what is and not what could be, it's an enjoyable film. Pod racing was awesome, Qui-gon was awesome, the last battle was awesome, I liked the cleaner aesthetic when compared to the grittier OT, and DUEL OF THE FATES!

Episode II is a terrible movie.

III is better than VI, despite pacing problems.

Usually SW fans ardently defend the entire OT or PT. I don't think it's that clear cut. There are people who so strongly hate the prequels that they will look at you as if you are insane if you like them, as if you had just said "I enjoy hitting myself with a spike and nail over and over." I... don't think it's that weird to like these movies, even if they do have problems.

I dont loathe it like I do AotC. It has a few moments. Maul was pretty cool. Jar Jar and the Gungans are really what did it for me. I just really really disliked the Gungans. I didnt even mind young Anakin so much at the time. The pod race was neat and birthed a cool videogame.

Overall its still a pretty horrible movie.

Really? I seem to find most people arguing that III was the best of the prequels.

I don't. I've found most people in denial or don't care enough like it because it's darker. In retrospect, most of those people liked the first prequel on initial viewing or rewatched them in reflection.

Episode 1 feels the closest to what a Star Wars film had been previously.

Episode 3 may be the most satisfying, but it's even more of a goddam mess.

Episode 2 may have had the best score! So, it has that.

I was around 20 years old when it came out. Expected Original Trilogy quality. I went back 4 more times hoping I had missed something. Trash film with great prod value.

Midichlorians, immaculate conception, young Anakin, Jar Jar.

These were the things I hated to much that I questioned whether I was a fan of the franchise anymore.

I think people like 3 because it's dark and stuff relevant to original movies actually happen and shit but THE reason I like it is the Emperor. It's so over the top ham, I live for that shit. I don't even care.

I rewatched the prequels over Christmas.

The Phantom Menace is mediocrity defined but it is the best of the three by quite a wide margin. Like most people, I used to think Attack of the Clones represented the absolute nadir of the series, but Revenge of the Sith botches Anakin's transformation into Vader so severely that I'm willing to say it's even worse.

I like a lot of things that I'd associate with TPM. I was 5 when it came out and got a ton of toys and shit for it, some of which I still have. A plate with Anakin and Sebulba on it, a folder with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, the Gungan cruiser toy that was fun to play with in the bath tub, my beloved Anakin backpack that I proudly wore through kindergarten. Our first console was the N64 my brother bought with the Podracer bundle. Star Wars was the shit when I was a kid and I didn't discriminate between PT and OT. My dad to this day LOVES Qui-Gon.

It doesn't really stop it from being a bad movie, but that's sort of irrelevant to me at this point.
