Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I imagine this will be an issue for Platinum.

1.) They have over 200 staff, presumably at least half of which were making Scalebound.
2.) Nier Automata is about to go gold, and Yoko Taro makes it sound like it's not going into sequel mode right away.
3.) Activision killed off their licensed game division, so that's not an option anymore.
4.) They have the Gran Blue Fantasy project and Lost Order, but I'm assuming that was going to take on Nier's staff given Kamiya wasn't attached to it.

Now they need to get a project from someone on a short turnaround for a ton of staff in an era where that kind of thing is pretty hard to do, and they were struggling to get contracts even when that was less true.

Hopefully, considering how they were in the Switch's partner slide, they're already working with Nintendo on something on the platform. They need to get projects if this one goes down.

This was the big reason why I bought an xbox one. If this is true i'm going to be quite unhappy....

We really care about Scalebound even if we don't show it.

I'd hope this doesn't get cancelled because it always seemed like a cool concept but I was always underwhelmed by its showings at E3. I was hoping they would be able to pull it together.

Yea I am sure many of those were from people who actually cared... :p

Oh for fuck sake. If Microsoft have some brains they won't do this, because outrage will be huge. Lionhead and some free2play garbage is one thing, but canceling Kamiya's dream game is brand suicide.

I know everyone here thinks MS is pure evil but from the game's showing it's seem to hint quality wasn't there and they've been working on it for a while. Kamiya's name itself doesn't mean much, if it did the Wonderful 101 wouldn't have bombed that badly.

Xbox brand seems to be transitioning into Halo, Forza, Gears and Windows 10 Store/PC gaming

Of course I blame Microsoft. Look at the list of cancelled games and closed studios.

Fuck MS if true. I'm so sick of Halo, Gears and Forza.
Shit costs money
Wasting money isn't a good business practice
This was seemingly wasting money
That's how the real world works

Wow. It always looked rough to me but I wouldn't have expected a straight-up cancellation, especially since it was supposed to release this year.

Isn't this where a company steps in and throws some money at a project to get it back on track? Maybe MS had already assumed this would be a loss, and doesn't want an even bigger hit? Puzzling indeed. I look forward to a statement.

Man, as i said the game itself looked bad and had one of the worst main character designs i can remember. So i don't think we will miss much with the game, but i'm seriously worrying about Platinum if this is true....Let's hope Nier sells really well.

Damn, MS is having a real rough gen when it comes to third party exclusives...

They're not the only ones.

Sony probably ended best with Ratchet, Bloodborne and Until Dawn but The Order was a flop, and a lot of the smaller titles didn't pan out that they just dropped them.

Nintendo was so so, but none of theirs were a commercial success.

Wouldn't be surprised, game looked rough last time they've shown it.
Seems MS is budget concious this gen, and they're pulling the plug on projects even deep in development.

Just fucking god DAMN it. Why is it that this keeps happening to top quality AA studios. They decide to jump on to AAA dev without considering costs, their game either underperforms or gets cancelled, a shitload of people are out of work, and then they start working on russian/Korean F2P shit while they bleed out. Fucking obsidian, fucking remedy. God fucking damn it.

A whole fucking genre just died. I'll donate to Kamiya's kickstarter in a few years when everything's settled, hopefully going without will mean the genre can make a decent low budget comeback. But fuck, man. I love these games.

If PG dies, my heart could not take it.

There's a way, go mobile.

If true, then Microsoft's small amount of exclusives just got even smaller. I'm starting to look over at my PS4 a bit more lately. I hope we get to see this game, that coop gameplay looked bad but everything else really interested me.

An IP for a game they cancelled, with no other entries in the series. What are they gonna do? Sit on it? At least if they sold it they would recoup some money.

They could keep it to have another of their studios tray to make a dragon themed WRPG I guess.

An exclusive Skyrim-ish game could be big for them, maybe more so than what Platinum was working on since their games/combat focus tend to make their titles more niche.

Why even get a Xbox one if you only want to play Japanese games... I was looking forward to it too, now there is nothing to look forward to.

I get that, but considering how spread thin Platinum have been, I wouldn't be surprised it this is the result of janky management on their end.

This. They've had their hands in a lot of shit and they probably took on much more than they originally thought.

The game didn't look that interesting, but this still sucks. Hopefully Kamiya can get another game going soon enough.

I'd be pretty surprised if Nintendo was interested in signing Bayonetta 3.

It would be among their most expensive games by far, Sega won't have footed most of the bill, and it has pretty terrible sales potential.

I think you overestimate how much people even know about Kamiya outside of GAF.
