Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Worst console in modern history at this point.

Honestly as someone who adored the 360 I kinda agree, though I think the Wii was the worst to me on a personal level. But the Xbox One is right behind it.

Its certainly the biggest disappointment ever in terms of consoles for me.

That leaves Raiden V as being the single great Japanese-developed exclusive XBO game, I guess.

What a pity after last gen.

Sony sticks with The Last Guardian for what, 10 years? And MS cancels this after less than half of that. The project really must not have been any good or inspiring guys.

I don't think Last Guardian should be the example for long dev cycles turning out right. Might as well use Duke Nukem Forever.

Now this reads like threat.

I don't want to get into list wars but that is an awful comparison. Better would be conference comparison.

WWS Games announced by Sony at E3 2014:
Entwined ✓
Bloodborne ✓
LittleBigPlanet 3 ✓

Though they were in cruise mode at that conference and didn't reveal much lol.
But overall they have a pretty good track record with releasing all their games they announce.

Yeah, my bad! Meant to just compare both consoles exclusive line ups in general not so much by E3 2014.

The picture doesn't show TLOU PT2, God of War, Death Stranding which are probs 2018- beyond is why.

Great, so the only thing Microsoft had to even get me to buy that POS install box (Don't get me wrong I also think the PS4 is a POS install box. I want my games to run not to be installed, and I know that isn't a popular opinion, on a console :( ).... get's cancelled.

The headphoneguy haters can rejoice. MORE ultra muscular dudebro shooters for them with no couch MP and more Online MP where they can go "that's gay.. huhuhuhu" and think it is a hilarious gay joke. (As a gay man, I love good gay jokes, but not when Dudebros consider that the word or a stereotype is the wholejoke :( ).

Way to drive of people AGAIN MS! Just like you did with the Xbox crowd moving to the 360.. (Xbox had a lot of great exclusives)... and the few Japanese Xbox fans you had with the 360... by making the latter half of that console into "DUDEBROK FUCK YEAH!" gaming.

Sorry just pissed of at the decision. It is like MS WANTS to lose.

Maybe it is all the activist shareholder Value act jerking about to get them to drop the XBox brand, as otherwise MS is just ... too...bloody... stupid!.
This is quite the post, wow. Just going to comment and say that the reason games install onto the hard drive rather than play from the disc is to decrease load times and protect the disc drive.

Even if the tweet was about something else the theory that Microsoft would have pushed the game into a new direction and that caused problems isn't unfounded. It's happen before with them and their exclusives.
I mean, it is actually unfounded. It is possible. It's also possible Platinum fucked up. Or neither fucked up and amicably split, not likely but it's possible.

Guys, he's quoting another tweet (everything after the RT). And in his usual troll self, he's saying "the state of the game is better than the state of your life." This tweet is proof of nothing.

Ah thanks for clearing that up for those of us who do not understand twitter.

My take on all this, and I've been seeing this for a while, is that Microsoft is transitioning all their games to the 'live service' model.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Basically Microsoft want to have their games emulate what Minecraft has been able to do.
Long lifecycle, large user base, Increased spend.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Microsoft's future direction is about being able to offer the Xbox games and live services on multiple devices that run Windows 10.
Well, many in this thread called it. Service to the forefront if true

Well that would explain a lot.

Sad. I just wanted another good singleplayer game from my favorite developer :(

Say what you will about the Wii on a graphical level, on a software level though it had a ton of unique and fun content.

To be fair, Sony sticking with a project like Last Guardian for 10 years is extremely rare in the industry and many would argue is actually bad business. But the optics of keeping a fan-favorite alive and well and seeing it through to the end is worth more than lost revenue to Sony.

And I say it works, I think Sony's commitment to new IPs from their studios, even if they don't pan out 100% of the time, is what keeps that platform infinitely more interesting to me than what MS is doing with theirs. 343i should be doing stuff other than Halo. The Coalition should be doing stuff other than Gears. I get that launching a new IP is extremely difficult, but even when the new entries in their series are good, the fact that the series are so old really tempers their reception. "It's pretty good actually, but it's another one of these" is the critique that comes to MS exclusives this generation time and time again.

It certainly is rare, but given the pedigree Sony was looking at (Ico, SotC,) and TLG itself, they believed in it and saw it through, which has earned them enormous good will with fans, and it turned out the game was an amazing experience to boot.

Again it goes back to the actual title itself. Was probably a tough sell to get off the ground initially & even more difficult to develop as the project progressed. I'm wonder what creative differences / seemingly insurmountable technical hurdles they were up against. And I feel terribly for Kamiya, given the suggestion of mental fatigue. Having a studio rest on your shoulders as he did with this game, not to mention the others he's produced but particularly this one going through troubled development, must have weighed greatly on him.

I don't think Last Guardian should be the example for long dev cycles turning out right. Might as well use Duke Nukem Forever.

Duke Nukem Forever isn't half the end-product The Last Guardian is. It's also not a new IP. What other game was released recently to critical acclaim that suffered a 10+year development cycle, over TWO platform generations? It's a fair contrast.

Wow, this sucks.

I was going to buy an Xbox for this game, guess I just saved a few hundred bucks.

Game looked very interesting, but the demo's were always very rough. What the hell is Microsoft doing.

I don't see how you can be perfectly content with that compared to all the stuff Sony has shown off in the last year alone. If you care to explain, I'd be all ears to see how you're fine w/ just expecting pretty much that & Scorpio lol

Isn't always about competition. I don't think he said what Xbox had was better than ps4 offerings. He seems like he will be fine with what they put out plus Scorpio while playing ps4 and buying switch .

neojubei

Will drop pants for Sony.
This reminds me of true fantasy online. That was one game i really wanted to play but MS soured their relationship with Level 5. Wonder if the same went down with platinum.

Happy to see so many Japanese developers.

It's always been the main reason I go to playstation over Xbox. Both games get enough 3rd party support but Microsoft just doesn't have much exclusive Japanese content and this seems to be a repeat of last gen.

One of the handful of games that was keeping me considering Scorpio are now gone. It's like the 360 all over again for me but thankfully I didn't jump in yet.

PS4 is pretty damn decent tbh, and PC is incredible. I have a great feeling about Switch too.

As a PS4 only owner I have been quite disappointed with it. PC has been the only decent platform imo.

But that's not what this topic is about, sorry for going off the rail.

Kinect almost useless, no new games use it
Few exclusives
Appealing games getting canceled...

What's the point of buying an xbone?

This. Honestly I keep my X1 because all Rockband songs I downloaded while playing previous titles in X360 and that's it. Used to play FIFA on X1 but now playing in PS4, and many other titles are now in my PS4. Halo? Mmm lost interest in the saga since Halo 4. Wow now that I see my X1 looks worthless.

what does install box even mean?

Can I pop in the game and play THE FULL game without having to worry for running out of install space? Or attaching other HDDs? Or installing new HDDs?

No?
Then It's an installbox, and I might as well start up my PC and install it there. I know, like I said, that isn't a popular opinion, but it bugs me. I know now you'll start attacking me over it (and maybe I should not mention it buy I'm seriously pissed about the cancellation), but the fact that even PS4 with it's streamlined install (try going outside the beaten path and you still need to wait for it to install, but very often games have you play the first part in 30 seconds... clever..but still... install).. it still is a shitty install box.

and yes my mood is foul.

Come on Nintendo, do what you did with Bayonetta... fund the development and save this game as a Switch Exclusive. Make it glorious and show those losers at MS what true winning is like.

And there goes the only game that could have made an Xbone appear under my TV. There must have been a Kamiya explosion at Platinum when he learned the news.

Sad to see so much manpower and talent wasted for many years like that. I can't even imagine how the artists and programmers must feel to put all that work to the garbage bin. If the project was in a dead-end, maybe it's a relief for some - a way to start work on another game and push forward.

I wonder If they can salvage some art and assets to use on another future game ?

I think this really speaks to the different philosophies that Sony and Microsoft.

You've got Sony keeping shit around for 10 years (the last guardian) and Microsoft seemingly axing things left and right.

I'd say the more common theme is that MS keeps meddling in all of the studios they buy/projects they fund to the point where they pivot/scope creep themselves to death whereas Sony generally lets their studios do their thing. Not that Sony never releases bad games or kills projects/studios, but they also didn't demand that Naughty Dog turn UC4 into a VR co-op open world game midway through development.

This whole gen is just horrible. Worst gen I have been through and I've played games since NES. Can't wait until few years and hopefully things get better again.

It's not though. 2015 and 2016 were excellent years and this year looks really promising as well, but MS's output is a mess.

I mean, considering how TLG doesn't seem to be blowing up the charts, this is honestly good VS bad business.

But, it does inspire confidence for the future (or concern in MS' case) as a consumer, yeah.

You are correct, MP wasn't something that just came out of the blue. It was teased in multiple interviews after is reveal. There was even a podcast interview with Ken Lobb who stated that scalebound was going to be a game that Platinum do well (Action) and something MS does well (MP).

even the reveal trailer gave some implication of this, so that theory is just being pulled out of thin air.

Thanks for reminding me. Yeah. I think people were just upset with the multiplayer direction and want to blame this game's troubled development on it.

Game looked like shit but with Ms's meager offerings they really couldn't afford this blow. They are fucked. Now let's just hope they don't drag platinum down with them.

I mean, it is actually unfounded. It is possible. It's also possible Platinum fucked up. Or neither fucked up and amicably split, not likely but it's possible.

All evidence points towards there being problems on both ends. Neither is "innocent", and at the end of the day it sucks, as we miss out on the game and likely many people will lose their jobs over it.

Oh I get people liking the Wii. I truly, hated that console. More than any I have ever owned. But I certainly see why many enjoyed it.

You got great things that go together like French Fries and Chicken Wings, Peaches and Cream, Will & Grace, Jak & Daxter, and then there are things like.... Japanese and Xbox. They just don't mix.
