Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

So people don't have to agree with me but since there's so much discussion about it, I think it's plainly clear that Scorpio is an attempt to lock in people into the Live ecosystem that would otherwise float to PS4 or PC (where they wouldn't pay for Xbox live). I think it's about service fees and not first party games. I guess we will see but I don't think first party games are the point.

Interesting, to say at least. You know, just months ago it seemed to be commonly accepted on NeoGAF that "exclusives don't matter", as people buy consoles for the well-known blockbuster 3rd party games. But now that I think of it, they don't matter UNLESS you don't have them (or at least, nowhere near as much as your competition).

As shinobi said, Scorpio is going to need proper software to take off. Offering the best looking 3rd party games is indeed a nice USP, but I seriously doubt this will do the trick.

Scalebound though? Platinum games aren't usually broken at launch. Inclined to think Microsoft probably wronged Platinum in some way with this game and then couldn't ship it

Platinum's expertise lies within a very specific type of game.

They were clearly in over their heads with Scalebound.Probably not equipped technically nor do they have any experience with the kind of game MS wanted them to make.

Its liked asking a brilliant chemist to compose music.

I disagree with this. Platform holders need to create a diverse portfolio of games to attract a wide range of gamers. Not every game can, or should, be a mega hit. I don't think Microsoft have ever understood this.

I guess we won't be seeing Sunset Overdrive 2 after all.

That game will be fine :)

I think it will because square knows the original didn't sell that well and hopefully brought this into consideration when they made their sales expectation. At least the game demo was good enough to convince me that it's not having the development scalebound had.

Why would you want to advertise something that will never exist?

Idk if it was another factor.
But don't forget this was supposed to come to PC too.

So maybe that added even more dev time and stress time.

Can I pop in the game and play THE FULL game without having to worry for running out of install space? Or attaching other HDDs? Or installing new HDDs?

No?
Then It's an installbox, and I might as well start up my PC and install it there. I know, like I said, that isn't a popular opinion, but it bugs me. I know now you'll start attacking me over it (and maybe I should not mention it buy I'm seriously pissed about the cancellation), but the fact that even PS4 with it's streamlined install (try going outside the beaten path and you still need to wait for it to install, but very often games have you play the first part in 30 seconds... clever..but still... install).. it still is a shitty install box.

and yes my mood is foul.

Come on Nintendo, do what you did with Bayonetta... fund the development and save this game as a Switch Exclusive. Make it glorious and show those losers at MS what true winning is like.

I'm not gonna attack you, it's just video games. But with games being more and more detailed with higher res graphics the time is gone, for right now at least, where you just put the game in and play. Even though it is pretty seamless on the PS4 as long as you have space (I don't own an Xbox One), and deleting a game is easy.

Wooooooooowwwww. Just woke up to this and already 70 pages. Geez this is huge blow for MS.
Not gonna lie though, it looked awful and probably was gonna be.

My take on all this, and I've been seeing this for a while, is that Microsoft is transitioning all their games to the 'live service' model.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Basically Microsoft want to have their games emulate what Minecraft has been able to do.
Long lifecycle, large user base, Increased spend.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Microsoft's future direction is about being able to offer the Xbox games and live services on multiple devices that run Windows 10.

Multiplayer! Multiplayer! Multiplayer! is the new TV! TV! TV!

In saying that, gaming in general beware. An obsession around MP is merely always online DRM coming back under a cloak. Shit like Hitman even pulls they "soz bro you need to be online to play a SP game...". When there isn't an offline mode, well, fuck the dev/publishers peddling DRM.

Men In Black. Redacted from our minds just like that. Did they do this with Phantom Dust and Fable Legends I wonder?

EDIT: Ah, off their official YouTube accounts? Makes more sense, thought it meant they were pulling any videos of the game from YouTube via copyright or something.

Microsoft is very clearly switching the totality of their brand direction.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if Scorpio was the last "true" console and the next Xbox was just an iterative set-top box that has replaceable parts.

All they had to do was SIT IT OUT! That is all MS HAD TO DO! So yes it bloody well is their fault. Kamiya would have finished the game and I would have had it in my grubby hands. But noooope, MS being MS.. they probably wanted some Microtransactions in there or some other thing that made Kamiya go "you know.. fuck this shit.... I'll go make a Nintendo game instead".

It was literally the ONLY Japanese Developer they HAD that made an exclusive for them!

SO you bet your damn arse it is their fault. If it is your only one, you pamper that studio! You don't chase them off. You don't go acting like Nintendo in SNES days, when you are Nintendo in Wii U days!
lmao sit it out? MS cancelling it is them sitting it out they were paying for the thing.

Yeah, no thanks. Fuck this approach.

Three Activision licensed titles, one of which was at least solid, and Star Fox Zero with most of the design work done by Miyamoto/Nintendo. I'd say Platinum's supposed fall from grace is mostly overblown baloney.

Platinum makes solid games when they're allowed to do what they want. Most of the bad games they're involved in are cases where it's plausible if not blatantly obvious that the blame lies above them.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
So when will Mark Cerny go on a tour with Hideki Kamiya to all the Sony internal studios?

Actually if you look at the profit margins for games this gen that model specifically not only is the most profitable, but it's what most developers in general are leaning towards. Sony's been doing it too, with the shit ton of grinding/MTs in the MP of ND's games which are among their most expensive games to produce.

And it's fine to do this for a couple of games but at the end of the day console software also needs to be diverse. Sony understood this, Nintendo understood this, Microsoft never understood this.

Yeah, keep throwing money at the studio missing milestones. That seems like a great idea.

A bad game in development got cancelled is how this looks. Happens all the time. Why is this thread 67 pages? its not anything new in game development that troubled games are cancelled. Even Platinum can misfire, cough Korra cough TMNT cough.

A AAA Microsoft exclusive from a beloved studio that many were looking forward to was cancelled. Not that hard to get.

Also cough Activision cough.

I mean we know that the game was having severe development problems. Do you want MS to sit and wait like how Sony did for The Last Guardian? I mean that's nice and all if they did it but I can't say I blame them if they decided to cut their losses in terms of finances when they did.

It sucks, no doubt about it and I'm not trying to claim MS is innocent. But Platinum themselves were in development hell that much is clear and this isn't just a MS thing. Sony completely gutted a chunk of Sony Santa Monica over a canceled Sci-fi IP just a few years back

I'd say the more common theme is that MS keeps meddling in all of the studios they buy/projects they fund to the point where they pivot/scope creep themselves to death whereas Sony generally lets their studios do their thing. Not that Sony never releases bad games or kills projects/studios, but they also didn't demand that Naughty Dog turn UC4 into a VR co-op open world game midway through development.

The two companies are difficult to directly compare. Sony doesn't tend to buy studios the way that MS does, instead they fund individual projects to be exclusive to their platform. The closest analogue I can think of to a major cancellation and studio shuttering would be Sony's dropping of Tequilaworks when RIME wasn't shaping up to what Sony wanted it to be. They've stuck it out on longer bets like The Last Guardian, and even went in hard for No Man's Sky, which they must have known internally was going to disappoint.

MS seems far less willing to back something that isn't turning out the way they expect and whether that's a good thing or a bad thing from a business perspective, the juxtaposition can seem stark. It can seem like Microsoft's desire to own the studios that produce their exclusives is destructive, but its important to remember that studios fail and close all the time regardless of ownership.

Hopefully P* have enough other projects in the works to survive.

Exactly. At the end of the day the PlayStation 4's library is stronger for having games like TLG in it, not weaker.

What's the story with the game out soon Nioh or is it Nier

That by PG isn't it? I'm guessing the lead on Scalebound had no input in this though

Also is that being released on xb1?

I don't think that's too uncommon.

The official videos are pretty much just marketing for a game that doesn't exist anymore, there's still all the re-uploads and other channels with the same footage/trailers.

Now, if for some reason they started doing DMCA takedowns of those videos, then that'd be some bullshit.
Why would you want to advertise something that will never exist?

Weird Phantom Dust still exists. IS IT COMING BACK? (jk)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYo3Ic-3bE4

Also Phantom Dust videos have really low view counts don't they?
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=phantom+dust

100k for the reveal trailer is pretty fucking terrible.

Holy cow at the response. Scalebound is going to be more important in death than it ever was in life.

Nobody takes throwing all the sunk costs in the trash lightly. If it's close to the finishing line, wrapping it up will at least return some revenue. But, that's why we have a sunk cost fallacy - if it's floundering and nowhere near done, it won't make back the additional costs anyway.

I'm hoping that within the context of the recent Platinum TMNT game and how pissed I was when Devil's Third got canceled (and how disappointing the resurrected corpse was), that this baby needed to be smothered in the crib.
