I agree with other with concerns about the launch lineup. It reminds me of the PSP days, but worse lol.

Software lineup aside, I think it looks interesting. I doubt I'll get one due to lack of gaming time in general though; PS3 is newest console and likely my last until my kids grow up in ~5 years or so.

What does retro-gaf think of the Switch after the last 24 hours of news?

I'll wait and see in case of a **New** Switch revision. I like how Zelda is looking, but I find that generally I'm less and less enticed by Nintendo's software output as the years go by.

The region free news is terrific.

This shit just gives me flashbacks to the Wii U threads a few years ago. "Why isn't it $299? (it's $299) Why isn't it $250? (sales with $250) Why isn't it $200? (it is "refurbished") Why isn't it free?"
I feel like there's a contingent out there who every single generation say "I was a huge Nintendo fan until today, now I hate them". Like they said it about the Gamecube sucking after the 'loved' the N64, the Wii after the 'loved' the Gamecube (the weirdest one since the Wii sold 5X the GCN), the Wii U after they 'loved' the Wii. Like revisionist fake fans who are apparently constantly at a turning point of hatred.

Actually, I guess it's the same thing with Star Wars fans... Maybe it's just a standard neckbeard emotional cycle.

EDIT: And it's the Zelda cycle too lol!

The region free news terrific.
Oh yeah that's actually huge. First ever for a Nintendo home console.

preordered mine with red & blue! Zelda LE too, hoping bomberman is a fair price cause fuck im happy he's back

honestly, Zelda + bomberman makes this a better launch lineup for me than PS4/XB easily too

$50 more than i expected, paying for online sucks but i don't really do that anywhere anyway, and the price on the pro controller stings. the real bad news is the lack of pack-in game, though for sure 1,2 Switch was it

oh and No More Heroes 3 was my big surprise of the evening

agreed with all of this - and having had a day 1 GC, i love all the love that system now gets from people who weren't touching it with a 10' pole at the time, haha

I'm glad there's some positive reactions here. I just don't understand the software drought though. You'd think they'd have a nice launch library to make sure this system sold well out of the gate. It's my biggest concern. They've not had many heavy hitters over the past two years.

But the only huge first party games we're getting in 2017 (so far) are a Zelda port, Xenoblade 2 and Mario.

i can agree with this, i was definitely expecting at least more WU ports at/around launch - mario maker, smash, etc. still hoping there.

Mostly I increasingly think that GAF is an incredibly toxic place to talk about anything Nintendo related.

god yes, i imagine much of the net is like that with whatever ambiguous term "core gamers" is now too, but at least this spot's cool

I love it. It's basically what I was expecting: a somewhat powerful portable console I could easily use on my TV. It seems like a good home for Japanese developers filling in the void that the Vita and 3DS are leaving.

I commute by train every day for about an hour and a half so it will be awesome being able to play this to and from work.

strongly hopeful for the first part there, yeah - that's one of the biggest selling points i think, really hoping we see more japenese development on that front, there's a handful of companies that really kept the vita kicking along that i expect/hope to migrate

and i don't game on the go for very long bits of time so we'll see how much that battery life does me in, i'm guessing killing wifi and downing the brightness a bit (a la the 3DS) helps

I'm still looking forward to it and placed my pre-order as soon as they went up on Amazon. Shame they didn't show more games shown and weren't more announced for launch, but that doesn't bother me much. Can't wait to play Zelda and Mario.

Absolutely.

All Switch has at launch for me is Zelda and while I like Zelda I'm not the biggest fan of the series and I should be using that money that could be put towards retro games, PC games and parts and such. By the time I get Super Mario Odyssey, these games would be out:

Zelda: BOTW
Splatoon 2
Arms
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe(even though I played the Wii U original, this looks to be the definitive version with the added content and 1080p support)
Sonic 2017
Sonic Mania

There's more, but all that's confirmed for this year. There are other games have me hyped though like Fire Emblem Warriors and No More Heroes 3 and such.

I like the switch conference. Looking forward to Splatoon 2. How did Sega sway UBI Soft to ease up on the Tetris license I don't know. Shin'en's gonna bring it as well as WayForward (I know they're making another Shantae for it!) Region free is awesome as Nintendo wasted too much money combatting hackers who circumvent the firmwares of the Wii through the 3DS. Not to mention the EU and AUS gamers contacting the Japan side constantly.

I'm sorry, but I saw New Donk city and it crack me up. Do they know what donk means to certain Americans?

So I started a project on video pinball.. covering multille games across multiple systems. I quickly learned that pinball isn't an interesting video subject, so I got a little weird... but I am pretty happy woth the result and I hope you enjoy. Hail Satan.

Although the allure of a cleaner looking version of BotW is deep, I think I'm holding off on the hardware until Mario comes out. Then I'll get both titles next holiday season. It's the first Nintendo hardware I haven't bought at launch for a long time, but I just find my gaming time is limited and backlog is so crowded that it will be okay.

ARMS was the highlight of the show for me, if only because I'm a fan of arena versus games like Virtual On and EXVS.

I suppose Bomberman R and Sonic Mania would appeal to Retro-GAF. USF2 as well, but I really loathe the HDR sprites. Glad there's' a toggle for that.

yeah, toss in bomberman, and both Wondery Boy games and i think it's a pretty nice list
need to see more on that sonic game though!

yeah i can see that for ARMS but again wish it was a pack-in somehow, ah well
and damn i guess i was like the only one who didn't mind the Udon sprites?

I got in line at the gamestop a few blocks from at 7 am this morning because there was no way I was missing a switch pre-order. I went with grey.

If both joycons were one color, I might have gone for it, but having one be one color and the other another would drive a part of me far too crazy.

March 3rd is going to be so damn expensive. Switch, BotW Special edition, BotW Wii U, Archer Link, Zelda, and Guardian Amiibo. My wallet is already freaking out.

Never been a huge Zelda fan, so probably going to wait on the Switch. I hope it does well, but it's difficult for me to see its long-term prospects right now.

The BOTW looks great and if it brings back that sense of exploration I will REALLY want to play it. However, I'm not sold on the Switch and don't own a Wii U. I have a daughter who's almost 4 and have been looking for ways to get her into gaming with me. I might consider getting a Wii U as they go out of stock ... wouldn't mind having access to all the fun family and motion games on both the Wii and Wii U. But there's one thing ... I just fucking ABHOR that giant gamepad. I know you can't operate the system without it, but I can play most mainstream games without it, right (except Mario Maker)? If BOTW forces you to use it then might pass. I mean, having my item menu right there might be OK but I've never had a problem hitting the start button for the last 30 years...

Bomberman is 30fps and honestly looks kinda ugly. Sonic Mania looks good, but I wouldn't grab it on a console that comes with no D-Pad out of the box.

I'll eventually grab a Pro Controller. But a pair of swappable D-Pad joycons would've made the console way better. It's really the only hardware flaw for me considering I don't care about voice chat.

Switch could've been truly modular with more Joycon configurations that you could mix and match, but I guess that would make things too confusing to the average consumer.

It looks like it might be awkward to use the d-pad on the pro-controller too. I definitely hope for a d-pad joycon at some point in the future.

wow!

just ready that buying the additional colored joy pads are opposites so if you spend 80 bucks have the colored system, you'll have matching R/L colors. neat!

and also get gouged some more...

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I suspect the Switch will be great, even if Nintendo's farting it out waaaay too early. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an interesting proposition by the end of the year, and I next year will probably be killer, once 3rd parties shift from the 3DS.

But anyone who thinks that, for example, EA's relative disinterest is going to matter as far as this getting meaningful 3rd party support is out of their mind. That didn't stop the 3DS, and it won't stop this.

I'm thinking I'll hold out for the first revision, SMT or Animal crossing. whichever is first.

Odyssey kinda makes it great by the end of the year if it makes it by then. Wii U has been a goldmine for Nintendo fans. More of the same at a better form factor can only be good. I'm most interested to see all the Japanese handheld developers take to the system. Getting ports from PS4/One is just extra. And as a tremendous fan of Virtual Console I'm wondering how that will factor in.

Odyssey looks sooo good. But if Xenoblade 2 actually hits this year? That's kinda mind-melting. I think back to the WiiU's dismal launch, and how a year later, it had some amazing games that people were just starting to realize existed. From the looks of it, Switch is going to be in a similar position, but even moreso.

I admit, part of it is just that I want Ninty to succeed, but I really think this thing is going to take people by surprise before too long.

this is a great point right here - 3rd party support for the 3DS was solid, looking forward to that....again, not to mention so much JRPG/Strat etc type games coming over from vita developers, i'd imagine

What does retro-gaf think of the Switch after the last 24 hours of news?

Definitely agrees with SheepyGuy on ths:

Mostly I increasingly think that GAF is an incredibly toxic place to talk about anything Nintendo related.

Other than that, Im just crossposting from the Dreamcast-thread (i already thought i was posting in here lol):

I also think the reactions to the Switch presentation has been way more negative than it deserves, but that is just how internet reacts to everything Nintendo it seems.

WIth that said, there are some things im legit worried about.

First of all their ridiculous peripheral prices, especially considering i would like to play mp on this thing. Why cant i use wiimotes for a game like Bomberman? This is going to be really expensive unfortunately.

Secondly, the thirdparty support looks atrocious for now. I dont care about the big western games, but i really wanted the 3DS/Vita software to transition over - which it probably will when the 3DS dies in Japan - but for now it doesnt look that hot.

Thirdly, while i dont use online myself, i still really dislike that Nintendo now adopts the PS+ model of paid online. Its especially annoying on the PS4 where primarily singleplayer games like Dark Souls 3 have important features that enhance the singleplayer experience locked behind the paywall. We dont know if games like this is coming to the Switch, but just the possibility is annoying me.

But all in all, I think the firstparty lineup looks great, the hw looks cool, and the price for the device itself is fine. I really want one at launch for Zelda, but might wait until summer since money is going to be tight until then.

Yeah paid online is my only concern. That could be a huge point of differentiation for them, it's great to not have 'pressure' to 'get your money's worth' - paid online is like a gym membership. I've never played online too much but am able to jump into Splatoon matches every couple of months right now without thinking about it.

We don't know anything though, maybe it's super cheap and a way of doing stuff like parental controls. Like how the browser was $1 on the Wii, a token amount - $20 a year?

Peripheral prices make sense when seeing how much goddamn tech is packed int the controllers, they're actually kind of nuts. You're right a cheaper option would make sense too though.

Morfeo

The Chuck Norris of Peace
Yeah, considering what we know about the service right now, it probably should be quite cheap to avoid a ton of negative comments all over the internet and at gaming websites. So lets hope it is.

Also I definitely agree that the joycons have really cool tech and that their prices makes sense from that point of view. It would just really soften the deal for me personally, and probably the millions of other Wii or Wii U-owners out there if we could continue to use those remotes for games like Street Fighter and Bomberman who wont need that tech. But i guess Nintendo really wants a clean break from the failure of the Wii U.

Finished burning all my PS2 games and patched a few (finally getting around to DQV).

Just in time to move to my herpetology obsession. Games won't get me evicted, but they don't hop around or eat bugs out of your hands, either.

Yeah it really makes sense from a clarity perspective. Switch peripherals only.

The Wii U did all that stuff in a way that was really good for the loyal fan - For Smash you could use the Gamepad, Wii Remotes, Pro controller, Gamecube controllers - Splatoon even supported a Frankenstenian Pro Controller tied to a Wii Remote!. All those generations of backward compatibility, and it was just too confusing, just like the console name and the console itself, for most of the public.

If you stick to the retro threads it isn't really bad. I think people from most of the threads I am subbed to would say the same about the rest of gaf as well. Probably shouldn't be saying that since that gets threads closed down as they don't want people only posting in their community threads and avoiding the main page...

As to the actual topic at hand, I can understand why there isn't any legacy controller/game support, and not even in a "we want to sell you new stuff" kind of way. I'm sure it's nice to get away from needing to support older stuff when you are making something new and needing to make sure something 2 generations old is still fully supported can be rough when you are trying to design new stuff. Not to mention it can limit the control ideas of whatever you are making now since you would want to make it so the old controller is supported by as many things as possible since you are going out of your way to make it work still. Not that the new controllers have shown any remarkable new features or innovative button/functions as of yet, unless I missed something...

Its just a bit strange, consider that even the Nes Mini supports the Classic Controllers from the Wii-line, so I was certain they was set on continuing the Wii-line of accessories.

But anyways, got a decent haul today:

Only 50hz unfortunately, but it was too good a deal to turn down. And after not owning any of the Sunset Riders I now own both :)

Is Mystic Defender good? I bought it a long time ago for $8 from my retro game store because my eye kept getting drawn to it but have never played it.
I enjoy the game alot, maybe due to some personal history/nostalgia as well, but I always recommend it. Could be even worth double dipping, as the Japanese version is quite different from what we've got in the West (NSFW 16-bit pixels).
