As a Wii-U owner, what is my motivation to Switch?

For all it's faults, the Wii-U is looking pretty great right now:

  1. I can continue to play Splatoon and Mario Kart online for FREE.
  2. I can share screenshots and communicate with friends via miiverse, without using an external device and Facebook.
  3. I can play local multi-player with 4 people without spending $240 or more on controllers.
  4. I can continue to play all my virtual console games that I purchased during the Wii years.
  5. And I can play Zelda Breath of the Wild, on the system it was originally designed for, and presumably move the map and other UI elements to the Gamepad, for a more immersive experience.
Eventually, the Switch will have games I want to play, but not in the foreseeable future, so I have no incentive to "upgrade" to the Switch at this time.

How do other Wii-U owners feel?

You can't do this on the Wii U

Do you wanna play a new Mario enough to pay $360? Because if not there does seem to be little reason to move over any time soon.

I'm sure later it'll become more attractive though.

Having bought a Wii U day 1, I feel like I don't really have an excuse not to buy the Switch.

I'm a piece of shit fanboy and always will be.

That said, future games.

Your point 1-4 is basically "I can still play my old console fine", which is valid, but not really unique to Switch/Wii U.

As with every console ever, if the new console doesn't have the games you want yet, don't switch.

Nintendo is going to put all of their resources in to it. So why not go to the system that'll have games developed for it?

Yep, this is how I feel at every console launch, and why I've never bought a console at launch. I generally get everything about a year later, which by all accounts is still pretty early.

I can't play Mario Oddysey, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, No More Heroes 3 etc. on my Wii U.

This, plus portability, much better display for handheld use, HD rumble (which is real, check the impressions threads), and future games past Zelda which is likely the last major WiiU release.

It will get games that aren't available on Wii U. If you're happy with playing Zelda on your current console, then wait until there's a reason to switch. It's pretty simple really.

I want to play Nintendo's new titles past Zelda, so I'll get the new console. Pretty simple for me. If you don't want to spend the funds on Switch, don't get one and continue to play the Wii U, as it has a great library on it's own. This seems really straight forward.

I have my Switch pre-ordered, but man, this shit right here. If 1 2 Switch were a pack-in with the system, it would be a completely different story. But as a stand alone game, the mind boggles.

At the end of the day I'm not buying the system for crap like this so... yeah.

My god that gif is in every damn thread. Good lord people

I am buying mine for Zelda, and the other games they announced that are 1st party. I really think it looks like a neat and fun piece of hardware that I cannot wait to mess with. Also looking forward to games like Pokemon and other games that were usually on handheld being made for a console with much more power than the 3DS.

I feel the same way with respect to Zelda. That game would be my primary reason for getting a Switch anywhere near launch, and I can save a lot of money by buying a copy for the Wii U instead.

I mean you basically are explaining why the Wii U is so good and why more people should have bought one. :)

But the obvious answer is that there will no new software post-2016. So once the split-gen stuff stops and it's all new games, it will give more incentive.

Not everybody needs a brand new console on launch day and - in fact - most people who buy a console DO NOT buy it on launch day or even launch year.

To be ripped off buying the same versions of games you already own with trivial updates for full price.

For now it doesn't have a system seller for me (for that price). Sure Zelda is THE game I want to play but I'll wait a bundle or a price cut this fall to get also Mario.

If I don't succumb in march...

Some of you are missing the op's point. He says no real reason to switch now. They acknowledge the future games.

I have to agree with the op. I don't really see how Zelda is better on switch. I guess there are some dinner games coming out that could make someone want to move over but I'm a little underwhelmed at the moment with the switches line up.

There is no reason to ever buy a console at launch. Especially with the Switch where the biggest game at launch is also available on Wii U.

None for me.

My Wiiu can play WiiU Wii gc games

I'll get the next switch iteration if they have a proper account system and bc with switch

There's just no urgency to get one now for me as a WiiU owner

I can play local multi-player with 4 people without spending $240 or more on controllers.

This isn't actually true. Assuming you're playing with the joycons detached with one per person, you'd only need to buy one more pack of joycons since they come in a pair, and that's also assuming no one else you're playing with has their own Switch. If the game you're playing requires more than one joycon per person, I see the issue though.

Eventually, the Switch will have games I want to play, but not in the foreseeable future, so I have no incentive to "upgrade" to the Switch at this time.

Then... don't? If there aren't any games you're interested in for the Switch, of course there's no reason to buy it.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Future Nintendo games.
Xenoblade 2 and Mario Odyssey are not on Wii U, nor will they ever be.

Shit, I'm keeping both. One console lets me play both Wii U and Wii games, something I may always want to come back to (Still haven't played Bayonetta) while one of course will let me play games the Wii U will never have (VC potential as well I guess), with the option of it all being portable.

Basically OP, you just need to wait for Switch-exclusive games to come out that you really, really want. Admittedly there's no strong need jump in now due to said games either not existing yet (Pokemon Stars) or taking forever to be released (Super Mario Odyssey), but I'm sure they'll eventually come a time when games you're interested in are released and you'll feel that it is time to make the switch.

People are going crazy for 50$ more than what they had imagined and paid online like every other console, everything is a problem now

How do other Wii-U owners feel?

1. For now, but Nintendo will shut it down eventually.
2. There are more social networks than Facebook, and Miiverse was clunky and slow to use.
3. You bought those controllers full price at some point - it's a new system away from the Wii brand so of course you need new ones.
4. Yep, but you'll miss out on new additions in the West such as Mother 3 and GC VC.
5. The Gamepad doesn't have UI elements on it - feature-wise the versions are identical.

If you are a Wii U owner, I guess you could buy this system next year or later. I am in a spot where I don't have a Wii U, because it never went below 199€.

But I am not going to buy the Switch, either. Even though Zelda looks lit.

At launch, I'd say there's almost no motivation, unless you really want to play Zelda on the go, or at a higher resolution.

Hopefully by the end of the year, it'll have developed a better library of exclusive games.

I see a lot of people still hoping for gamepad features in the Wii U version..Nintendo made it pretty clear at E3 that the gamepad screen will not be used at all.

I feel like those who went on media blackout prior to E3 are going to have an unpleasant surprise if they are expecting gamepad features. :/
