Reggie Fils-Aime on the Two Reasons Why Switch Won't Struggle Like Wii U Did

More like this :

March :Zelda
April : Mario K 8 deluxe delayed to Holidays (please understand )
June : Splatoon 2 delayed to January 2017 (please understand ) instead ARMS
July : Minecraft
August : Pikmin 4
September : nothing
Octuber : it's fukingnothing.gif
November : super Mario Odyssey delayed ( A delayed game is eventually good but a rushed game is forever bad, please understand ) no new release date.
December : Skyrim

They're going to backdate the delay to the past?

The main problem isn't the game lineup, although it is clear the console lacks real 3rd-party support. The main issue is that the console and all of its accessories are fucking overpriced. The Switch is now launching 3 years late in this generation with less powerful hardware and is being sold at the same price than the competition which include a triple-A game. Zelda looks really good, but is that enough to convince non-hardcore Nintendo fans to jump in ? I don't think it is honestly. Also, the console should have been presented as a handheld system that you can hook-up to your TV when you're home instead of the other way around. Still, the price would have remained an issue.

Late into what generation? This is in its core a handheld device and more powerful than the Vita

This is all a bit maddening as they were SO well set up to change their recent history going into the Switch presentation. After that they went against the two things Reggie himself laid out in the interview. They showed a lack of titles for year one and they had a confusing conference, leaving many loose ends and "details to come" statements.

Imaginary release lineups that have each month filled with "realistic" predictions. Boy that sure never backfired on WiiU (...except pretty much every year turned into drought land despite "safe" predictions based on empty promises - no trust for Nintendo).

Like fucking clockwork...

How about waiting until E3 before saying Nintendo won't have any game release until december?

It would be real strange if Nintendo would forgo selling their console just to hold off on 2017 titles to show off at E3.

Their main priority should be moving the Switch and hyping it up... they haven't given a damn about E3 in the recent past, why change now?

How I look at it right now:
March: Zelda
April: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
May: ARMS
June: Splatoon 2
July: ?
August: ?
September: Fire Emblem Warriors
October: Pokemon
November: Smash/Super Mario Odyssey
December: Xenoblade 2

NoA doesn't usually release anything in August but I'm sure there's stuff that they haven't announced that could be out in the summer.

Can people stop doing this? These month lists with 1 game per month? Great, the system has at least 1 game per month (except for the two it doesn't). But is that good? Because I don't think it is. That's like what should be the bare minimum. If anything that just makes it look worse.

The titles they have planned for 2017 do generally look good. But they aren't enough, even if you toss assumed stuff like Pokemon and Smash Bros. You need more than one game per month to sustain a system.

Different people like different games. Very few people are going to be in a situation where all of those games appeal to them. Maybe only 1-3 appeal to you? Then what, you're SOL for a lot more than a month.

If Nintendo had better third party support to fill the gaps it'd be one thing, but apparently they don't.

I had fun seeing Nintendo fanboys defend Nintendo against obvious trolls. I don't like either of your sort though, this thread is a disgrace.

If Xenoblade 2 is Xenoblade 2 then what was Xeboblade Chronicles X?

Also, Regie is crazy as usual.

The Switch is fixing the lack of compelling games by launching one at launch and another at Christmas.

Great fix. Good job.

Ugh...way to disregard the games in between launch and Mario. What about Mario Kart 8? ARMS? Splatoon 2? Yooka-Laylee? Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Unless that was sarcasm...?

I want this to happen, but I'm not sure if this will be the case. Well, not until pokemon and maybe monster hunter starts selling some units and maybe if there were supplies available.

Yep, Overwatch, or Destiny, or something along those lines would have gone a long way.

It's weird, the more I think about that reveal trailer vs. the January conference, it's like two different systems.

I thought about Destiny, but I feel like with what's been said about how they're approaching Destiny 2, Bungie is likely not going to be interested in going to back to such a broken process.

That's me. If I bought this system from the announced titles I'd only get Zelda, Mario Odyssey, and Splatoon 2. I just can't justify it even though those games look great.

Here, I'll help.

MK8 is a port that most people buying a switch this early have probably already owned or played. It's a good thing to have for the library but not exactly a huge plus. It's also not even a launch title, which means if you have no interest in it then after Zelda you're waiting 2-3 months for ARMS to potentially come out in May/June.

And if you aren't interested in ARMS? Then you have to wait even longer.

Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade both look good but neither appeal to everyone.

Yooka-Laylee would be a great game to have in the launch window, but it isn't even actually confirmed to hit the platform in April when it launches on other systems.

Must-buys already announced:

Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
ARMS
Splatoon 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Super Mario Odyssey

I'm sure I'll also want Fire Emblem Warriors once I see it.

Also interested in Super Bomberman R and Snipperclips. Curious about 1-2 Switch for parties and HD Rumble.

Already a great lineup. More stuff I want to play than I did with PS4 or WiiU prior to launch. Also, the form factor of the Switch itself is just innately appealing.

Are people really hyping up Arms?
ARMS looks incredible and everyone who's played it at preview events loves it. I want to play it more than Zelda or Mario. Seriously check out the buzz in the other threads.

Thank you for your input, it's very helpful. =)

Overwatch or Destiny would have been a huge get for Nintendo. But even if they do end up with a Switch version, I'd imagine they wouldn't show up until the Online Service rolls out and they can see if it will be worth the porting or not.

Every single time, Nintendo execs say "we did great, but the problem was just the long droughts in between amazing releases. We're making sure that won't happen again."

This will be the...5th time? When do we just realize they're lying?

Right, exactly. Personally more of the lineup does appeal to me than just those three titles. But certainly all of the titles don't. And I am sure that's the case for most people.

It's a good first showing, but there needs to be more. I am sure Switch probably will be on its way to having a decent library by time the year is out but it's going to suck for people who buy at launch.

First party output is fine. The biggest concern is third party titles. If they showed developers announcing games that haven't even started development, things must be REALLY bad.

"We see the reaction by consumers whether it's measured in Twitter trending topics or views of videos on YouTube or just the frequency with which I get called by old high school buddies that I haven't heard from in 30 years who are asking me how to get their hands on Nintendo Switch. We have communicated the proposition clearly and it is compelling."

Soooo... now we know why WiiU failed.
It was because Reggies old high-school buddies didnt called him to ask about it.

Hopefully, some executives at Nintendo realize that the Switch reveal was a giant misstep. It absolutely killed the positive momentum. It was disappointing because we heard rumors that the Switch launch lineup would look much better than the Wii U. It wasn't. There just wasn't a whole lot there. The majority of the press has taken it and run with the doomsday story.

It's not yet over for the Switch. It still could turn out awesome because the hardware is pretty cool. Yes, two of the most most awesome games this year are going to be on the Switch, which is more than can be said of the PS4 and Xbox One launches. But we need a lot more games.

If Nintendo is serious about this, they are going to have to show a whole lot of more games than just Mario at E3.

I don't see things drastically changing between Switch and Wii U in terms of 3rd party support.

Companies like Rockstar, Activision, EA, and Take 2 won't be moving away from PS4 and Xbox anytime soon.

I think you're reaching if you're claiming someone you haven't talked to in 30 years calls you to ask you how to get a switch.

If that happened to me I'd tell them to fuck off lol (after asking how they got my numbe of course)

The echo in press (mainstream and gaming) was mostly positive, the echo in social media (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook) was good too. A lot better than for WiiU or even XOne/PS4 before launch.

They've got less of an excuse this time if they don't manage to knock out at a game or two every month on average. They published around 40 Wii U and 40 3DS titles late 2012 to date or around 20 per year combined. If they get near that output for Switch, that's pretty good going.

I never really expected them to. But I did get the sense that the Japanese devs (SEGA, Square, Capcom, Namco) would be supporting the system more than they apparently are.

Where is Monster Hunter? Where is Tekken (This one really bugs me because Harada was even being coy about it)? Where is Final Fantasy?

Nintendo seems really confident in there not being any droughts for Switch right now, I wonder if they'll actually pull through. I'm guessing:

March: Zelda
April: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
May: ARMS
June: Splatoon
July: Game announced at E3
August: Game announced at E3
September Game announced at E3
October: Pokemon Stars
November: Super Mario Odyssey
December: Xenoblade 2

I wanna say this is what they're hoping for but it feels overly optimistic.

Man, I really wanted an Animal Crossing game at launch. I'll be tearing Zelda up, but I would love to have AC as my wife adores the franchise.

I guess, my switch will collect dust until mario drops, but I'm hoping some unannounced games that I'm interested in pop up before Dec.

I'll say again: one game per month from Nintendo IS a drought. 2 per month is both realistic, and the minimum acceptable. And that's still a starved system; 3rd parties have to fill in the gaps.

They had better have a steady flow of games with online multiplayer as well. Can you imagine them asking $60/year for online play when they launch the service, then only have just Mario Kart Deluxe, Splatoon, and maybe Smash Bros down the line? And given how often Nintendo delays games, you buy a year of service, but then Smash gets delayed until Fall 2018 or something.

expecting nintendo to release 24 big games a year is just crazy talk Even if nintendo did that we would have 1 good year and then a very shitty next year which has happened before. 2007-2008 was just that.

They've had years of nothing since abandoning the Wii u. It is reasonable to expect they would have a high level of support for this new console. That they don't even have ports of years old games ready at launch is kind of shocking.

This. It doesn't have to be 24 games or w/e number you have to pull, but how about at least more than there are months in a year? If they can't rely on third party support they need to bolster the library with their own games. Between 3DS and Wii U (or DS and Wii) they were easily doing that. Now suddenly they can't? It's just weird and unbelievable.

I wish someone would make a compilation of all the times a Nintendo exec. said "the problem with ____ was that we had software droughts, but that won't happen this time".

I would love to see how long that list would be.

games take time to make especially nintendo's big games and plus they have still been making games for the 3ds hell i dont expect anything from Intelligent systems for a while since they just released a mainline Paper mario and fire emblem game in 2016. Retro Studios is the only developer of theres that im wondering what the hell they have been doing since its been 3 years since tropical freeze released and they supposedly have enough staff for more than 1 project but im hoping we get something at E3.

Nintendo cannot just abandon the 3DS... but I imagine there will be a LOT of crossover between the platforms. Also, I do not know HOW you people can get so many games in a year. I usually do not have the time to play more than 3-4 games in a year, and I've already got Horizon, and Persona 5 on my list from PS4.

I seriously considered getting one of these in March with Zelda, but I'm not sure I will be able to find one. Sold out everywhere online that I have looked - Amazon is probably the best bet. In the first year alone on Switch, I would want Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, and Mario. That is plenty enough for someone like me

I will probably end up picking it up this Fall around Black Friday, if I can actually get one...

And bring on the Wii U ports - I missed out on that system
