Fox getting into video games with FoxNext division

More at the link. I probably wouldn't start with the assumption of AAA games.

Variety said:
Veteran Fox executive Salil Mehta has been named president of the studio's newly created FoxNext division that will work on its immersive businesses across Twentieth Century Fox Film and Fox Networks Group.

He will oversee video gaming, location-based entertainment, virtual and augmented reality productions
. The studio is aiming to drive the company's next-generation storytelling experiences.

Mehta joined Fox in 2013 and most recently served as president of content management for Twentieth Century Fox Film. He will begin his new role immediately, and report jointly to Peter Rice, Chairman and CEO of Fox Networks Group, and Stacey Snider, Chairman and CEO of Twentieth Century Fox Film.

FoxNext will oversee the production of studio franchise virtual reality experiences, such as the already announced ”Alien" and ”Planet of the Apes." FoxNext will also combine the efforts of the video gaming groups responsible for ”The Simpsons: Tapped Out" mobile game and the ”Alien: Isolation" console/PC game into one new interactive unit. [Nirolak's Note: To be clear, they mean the Fox staff who worked on these, not Sega's Creative Assembly and EA's Prince Edward Island studio.]

FoxNext will also oversee location-based entertainment business including the development of the 20th Century Fox World theme park in Malaysia.

Lionsgate and now Fox. How long until Paramount, Universal and Disney come back to the industry (outside of mobile) before exiting it <5 years later?

Again?

Disney, Lionsgate, and Fox are using similar methodologies in that they're licensing providers with a small amount of staff who work in tandem with external partners to try and produce good games.

It's more than just licensing a game and saying "Don't do these 200 things.", but it's a lot less than funding games directly.

I'm curious to see what comes of this

The new division will be led by Salil Mehta, who was previously president of content management for Twentieth Century Fox Film. As well as video games, the new group will also handle VR, AR and location-based entertainment (that's the planned 20th Century Fox World theme park). FoxNext will work across both the company's film and TV divisions.

Upcoming projects include the already announced Alien and Planet of the Apes VR experiences, which follow the success of The Martian VR Experience.
Hmm. I heard the Martian VR experience was awful and over priced.

While VR and AR are cool, I hope that doesn't take up all of their focus. Fox has some awesome properties they're sitting on that could make for kick ass gaming experiences.

Fox isn't just fox news.... considering 20th Century Fox, all of their TV shows, and their sports stuff, it's a huge network.

This might be a stupid question but who has the videogame rights to X-Men?
I assume it's Marvel but I'm not 100% sure since there were a bunch of games tied to the Fox movies.
I want new X-Men games so bad. Legends 1 & 2 and Wolverine Origins were so damn fun.

Edit:
I imagine the rights for X-Men outside of the movies reside with Marvel.

But could Fox have the rights for movie tie-ins?

Fox has been generally cautious towards the games segment in recent years, and has been selective in who it licences its IP to. Recent successful collaborations include The Simpsons: Tapped Out with EA and Alien: Isolation with Sega. The teams responsible for these two games will be combined into FoxNext.

Wait... what does that mean? Alien Isolation was a Creative Assembly joint, right? What does he mean when he says that those teams will be combined into FoxNext?

Sega owns creative assembly. They probably mean on the corporate side.

Yeah I just... I don't really know what that means. So the people in Fox who were in charge of licensing for games have been consolidated into FoxNext? I'm assuming that's what he means. Vague wording.

You all laugh now but this publisher got some decent licenses under their belt. I can see Fox going all in with their movie/tv franchises and Fox interactive rights.
