Worldwide Updates:

La La Land - $224M
Moana - $530M
Sing - $464M
Rogue One - $1.030B
Doctor Strange - $665M
Passengers - $289M
Split - $101M
Resident Evil 6 - $78M

Edit: I'm not sure if it was a holiday weekend or something, but Doctor Strange opened higher than every MCU film in Japan outside of Avengers and Age of Ultron. It was even a little over Civil War's opening. As such, Japan will push it over $675M worldwide.

It seems to have just had a really good opening. Doesn't appear to be any holiday going on.

Slightly ahead of Civil War and IM3.

See with RE6 (which clearly didn't perform all too well, but not badly either for that type) that's where the money is for Sony. Smaller horror movies (or comedies), possibly game adaptations, with a very tight budget, as well as some fewer big tent-pole movies with surefire brand (Spider-man) or animated movies (Cloudy...).

$80m is pretty much already 2x the movie cost (reported) in just 1 week-end WW (has opened earlier in some Asian countries like Japan)

The story of this week is Split and Hidden Figures. Excellent holds, I haven't seen split yet but I will at some point this week.

Don't be tempted to read the spoilers. I did and it ruined the pacing for me, because I was expecting a fundamental aspect of the film that could just as well have been a post credits easter egg and is fundamentally not connected to the movie.

I guess I should finally see Split huh?

Yes. Great thriller.

How was RE6's opening compared to the previous movies? I wonder if they'll bother with a reboot at this point.

Also RE7 is the 11th (12th if you count REmake) mainline RE title. Yes, I know. That would ruin the joke of the title.

Also will push it past the overseas totals of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor 2: The Dank World. Pretty good overseas haul for an MCU film not starring Iron Man.

1. Winter Soldier - $454m
2. Guardians of the Galaxy - $440m
3. The Dark World - $438m
4. Doctor Strange - $433m

Would need strong holds in Japan to pass Cap.

Considering the controversy, that isn't a bad number for A Dog's Purpose. RE at this point pretty much exists because of China, although the previous five films did decent domestically, I knew the series would keep going down domestically. It was to be expected.

The Last Airbender did $300 million on $150 million budget, that's below Mad Max, GI Joe Retaliation, and Pacific Rim numbers.

It barely broke even, if that, yeah.

Did you see Split?

Nope not yet

That said I'm assuming people are coming back around to working with M Night and giving him a bit of trust again. The Visit did 98 million on a 5 million budget and Split is already over 100 million on a 9 million budget. Those are some really nice profit margins

They announced once the movies wrapped up they had plans for a reboot as a tv series.

M.Night doesn't need trust again when you are financing your own movies.

Or did you mean actors?

I brought this up in the other thread, but I'm really curious how next week will look. Rings is the only "big" release (The Space Between Us comes out too, I guess).

I can see Split three-peating at #1 with Rings at #2 or #3.

Retribution was around 20m, but the movie was also 25m more expensive to make than TFC

And considering that this has done already 40m+ in Japan alone, they are gonna do just fine

Two weeks in and Live By Night isn't on the list at all anymore? 44 movies, no Live by Night listing.

Shocking. Did it lose all its theatres?

And Monster Trucks is still #9!

The weird thing about XXX: RoXC is that it may end up being Diesel's highest-grossing non-F&F action movie since the first XXX.

Live by Night lost 2659 venues in its third weekend (94% of its total last week), for the biggest theatre drop of all time.

My guess is that the weekend was down somewhere between 85-90%, and last weekend was pretty low to start with.

WB doesnt bother with estimates when films hit those sub $1M weekends. Fantastic Beasts isnt listed either. We will get numbers for both tomorrow with the weekend actual report.

Yeah I just mean in general including actors. There was a little bit there M Night was starting to look like a has been / joke but with these past 2 rebounds I think people are going to start taking him seriously again

I honestly don't think he's ever had trouble getting actors to act in his movies. Can you give an example?

No idea was just the vibe I got off him, until The Visit he went years without a successful film. Hell I totally stopped paying attention to him despite loving his early work.

Wow, looking at the worldwide chart it surprised me that there's a sequel for "Stephen Chow" Journey to the West, love the first one. Hope my local cinema will have a show for it.

WB lost $75 million dollars on Live by Night. They bout to own Affleck's soul for a hot minute on this new Batman film. Like fuck you homie, you doing exactly what we want. We need a tie-in to Znyder's Justice League 2 real quick.

Oliver stone has flopped a bunch of films and keeps making them. Ditto with Ridley Scott. I don't think that Affleck can go from Argo to being a write off outside of producer driven films in one flop. He'll do Batman and then go back to doing his own thing. Hopefully this will get him to stay behind the camera again in his next non-Batfilm though.

Yes, goddamnit! Stop starring in your own movies! Just direct!

So what's going on with Patriots Day? Are we considering it a bomb?

It got solid reviews but only made $32m worldwide and seems to be falling off already. $45m budget as well.

I feel like the hype that was "supposed" to be there for it never appeared. Despite the good reviews, no one talks about it.

It's a rahrah go america movie at a time when a lot of people feel like shit about their country, much less the rest of the world. Not that big of a surprise it didn't do so well.

So I saw RE today. It was as shitacular as the previous 5 films were but tbf, I knew that going in. By the Paul WS Anderson sliding scale, it was an average entry into the franchise.

RE2 is still the most fun film in the franchise.

So, I think we can safely say that Ghostbusters is going to be bumped out of the Top 20 of 2016 releases. Both La La Land and Hidden Figures are going to top it.

Ouch. Good for those movies though.

La La Land will pass Ghostbusters worldwide in the next 2-3 days.

It's also going to end up as at least the 9th biggest domestic release of all time by Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment, after all the Hunger Games/Twilight films. I suppose La La Land will have a shot at passing the first Twilight domestically if it plays strongly through February and gets a post Oscar-win bump.

Box office actuals are in. Live by Night dropped 94% to $101k.

Doctor Strange made more in its 13th weekend than Live by Night made in its 3rd weekend (in wide release)

$620 PTA, that's what, 15 people per theater per night at a $14 ticket price?

There needs to be a list of movies that from their second week onwards, the theater would have made more money over the weekend conserving energy and leaving those screens dark, instead.

i don't remember that in the movie. when was batman just chilling on the floor.
From Sepukku Squad, the scene where Enchantress is showing them all their desires, in which Will dreams of killing Battfleck.

I can understand why you might have erased the last act of that movie from your mind.

Yeah, A Dog's Purpose was essentially "watch this dog die over and over again." I was in no mood to see that.
So you're saying it's Edge of Tommorow with a canine instead of Tom Cruise?

Oh I thought it was from BvS.

fuck suicide squad. I'm glad I willed most of that movie from my memory.

also Dog's Purpose sounds like GroundDog Day.
