just cause 3 (lol)
project cars
dark souls 3
bloodborne
thief

What is this sorcery? Does Bloodborne run now stable at 40 to 60 fps?

every game that reaches the desired frame rate but slightly drops a frame or 2 will now be perfect.

Shiiiitt...going to test Killzone SF again with this! Still one of the best console graphics.

If this works, why make it an option?

Is there a downside for using Beast Mode?

As people have already said, sometimes gamelogic is tied to frame rate, this could mess that up.

Only example I've ever personally come across it was in a old pc game, "Call of Cthulu Dark Corners of the Earth", where if you have ...pretty much any machine nowadays, there's at least one section that becomes completely unbeatable early on where you have to escape a room, without doing something to limit your own framerate.

Granted, it probably won't be a problem here often, but it can happen.

Could this affect Destiny at all? Pretty sure that is a locked 30 fps but I'm sure it drops with a lot of stuff happening on screen (e.g. Siege Engine).

Some of you should keep in mind that this mode will not fix the frame-pacing issues in games like Bloodborne, so even if there's a boost in frame-rate, it still won't feel as smooth as a locked 30 or 60.

Does this mean I'm going to have to buy a Pro for FFXIV...
I think I'll hang fire until some figures are released but a closer to 60fps FFXIV is just too tempting!

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Until Dawn is the game to test with this. It has massive frame drops at most times. If boost mode can fix that, it can fix anything.

I'd love to try out Yakuza 0 with this. That game is a smooth 60 most of the time, but when you're running through crowded areas of the city it can bog down a little and there's a fair bit of screen tearing at the top of the screen.

GTA IV has a similar issue on the helicopter mission. You literally cannot pull yourself up without capping the game in some way.

not that i'm really doubting you, but was this ever confirmed? only asking because i saw people saying until dawn was capped at 30 as well when it's actually not

BB maintains steady 30 fps in lots of parts but never go higher than that. That's a part to see it's capped.

Guys, I remember back when the Pro was still launching people were discussing how some games couldn't take advantage of a possible boost due to how said games had computiational stuff tied to the actual framerate.

Any examples of what games could, in theory, suffer from that?

It will probably work like this:

Any game with a locked 30 fps will hold closer to 30 than the normal PS4, any game with locked 60 should hold closer to 60. Any game using a dynamic resolution will probably hold higher to its max resolution and any game with a variable framerate should get higher framerates in general.

This is good news. Makes PS4 Pro a little more attractive.
Should be fun to revisit the old threads where some members were claiming it would be irresponsible to add such an option because of game stability etc ;)

I think Sony made the right call, still.

If "boost mode" was on by default on the Pro and it introduced bugs in existing games at launch people would have been upset and it would have been justified.

This is a compromise. I can't wait to see how it works.

Instability is basically because the games weren't programmed to work with the additional CUs and increase clockspeed of the CPU.

There were 2 unused CUs in the PS3 as a way of increasing yield. I remember having jailbroken my PS3 in order to use additional CUs in the PS3. If you were lucky then those CUs would work and it really did increase performance in games but introduced instabilities such as freezing and other weird Skyrim like glitches.

Use Beast Mode with caution.
