RedFyn - 8/50 books | 18/50 movies

Books

1. Storm Front - Jim Butcher
2. Fool Moon - Jim Butcher
3. Grave Peril - Jim Butcher
4. Summer Knight - Jim Butcher
5. Death Masks - Jim Butcher
6. Blood Rites - Jim Butcher
7. Dead Beat - Jim Butcher
8. Coraline - Neil Gaiman

Extras/Reread:
• The Outcasts - John Flanagan

Movies

1. Hell is for Heroes
2. Jack Reacher 2 - much better than I remember the first one being
3. Tarzan (2016)
4. Universal Soldier
5. War Paint (1953)
6. Hamburger Hill - I enjoyed it, at least as much as one can enjoy something like this.
7. American Ninja
8. Eraser
9. Stalag 17 - this one surprised me. I quite enjoyed it and would recommend checking it out
10. Moana - BEAUTIFUL. AMAZING VISUALS. I didn't realise it was a musical going in and didn't like the first song in the village. The vocals were great but the songs less so. My brother said he wrote Hamilton (or maybe just composed the music for it I don't remember) and perhaps that's why I wasn't a big fan of them. I'm not one for that stuff.
11. Central Intelligence
12. The House that Screamed - What did I just watch? No seriously it's so dark it's hard to see.
13. R.O.T.O.R - legitimately terrible and not even it's so bad it's good. I only stuck through it so that I could add it to the list and say how bad it is.
14. American Ninja 2 - Better than the first
15. American Ninja 3 - Slow and dull. Much worse than the others. That ending though. Angelic light covers him as he uses Ninja magic to go super saiyan and eradicate the poison from his body.
16. Murphy's War
17. Pink Cadillac
18. Hannie Caulder

Extras/Movies I've seen before:

• Xmen First Class - enjoyable movie but I prefer the style of the original trilogy
• Guardians of the Galaxy - still not a fan
• Star Trek Beyond - I'll miss you Chekov
• US Marshalls - This ones a classic for me

orthodoxy1095 - 1/50 books | 11/50 movies

I won't copy over the list of everything I consumed this month, but I had a decent month of viewing. I finally got around to watching Scott Pilgrim, which was pretty solid, and finally got around to one of my bigger movie sins which was not having seen the Indiana Jones Trilogy. I thought the first was the best, the second was terrible and the third was great. I also watched some decent rom-coms, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Begin Again, both of which seemed like they should be pretty average, but I ended up enjoying both of them quite a bit.

On the book front, I read a lot of parts to books, but only finished one, Shūsaku Endō's Silence, which I read in preparation hoping that movie adaptation would come out to theaters in my town...which it didn't

Hippolnareff - 2/50 books | 7/50 movies

Books

1. The Gap of Time - Jeanette Winterson - ★★★★
2. His Bloody Project - Graeme McRae Burnet - ★★★

Films

1. Forks Over Knives (2011) - ★★ - I've been really interested recently in adapting a plants-based diet. I've seen informative documentaries in the past but this one felt too bias to the point of saying it cures Cancer.
2. Rogue One (2016) - ★★★★ - Really enjoyable film, coming from someone who doesn't know the original trilogy too well. It would be 5-Stars but I couldn't stand the wannabe Han Solo and think he should've just been cut from the film.
3. Sing Street (2016) - ★★★★★- Never stopped grinning like an idiot. Such a lovely film which hit many notes for me as someone who was in a band when they were younger.
4. Blind Date (2015) - ★★★ - A fun French rom-com that struggles a little with character development and flip-flopping between emotional drama and quirky indie. Pretty enjoyable.
5. A Most Violent Year (2014) - ★★★★ - I was meant to see this film when it came out in the cinema but eventually forgot. Not the film I was expecting, far more grounded. Loved the suspense.
6. London Has Fallen (2016) - ★ - One of the worst films I've ever seen. Offensive, vapid and patriotic bordering on the psychopathic.
7. Hunt For The Wilderpeople (2016) - ★★★★ - Exactly the film I was expecting and enjoyed it. Surprised to not see either of the FOTC but Murray has a nice appearance. Sweet story with a little fantasy thrown in.

End of January Beginning of February Update: Ephidel - 00/50 Books | 15/50 Movies | 4 TV series
Cheers for the reminder, Orthodoxy.

No books for me so far, just some movies and an attempt to work my way through some of the TV I recorded last year but never got around to watching.

Movies
1. Love at the Christmas Table (2012) ★★★½ (01 Jan)
2. Autumn in the Vineyard (2016) ★★★ (08 Jan)
3. Love On A Limb (2016) ★★ (09 Jan)
4. The Irresistible Blueberry Farm (2016) ★★★ (14 Jan)
5. The Music In Me (2015) ★★★½ (15 Jan)
6. Tulips In Spring (2016) ★★★ (15 Jan)
7. Appetite For Love (2016) ★★½ (15 Jan)
8. Mother Betrayed (2015) ★★★ (16 Jan)
9. House of Secrets (2014) ★★ (18 Jan)
10. Visions of Terror (1994) ★★ (22 Jan)
11. Cup of Love (2016) ★★ (22 Jan)
12. Love in Paradise (2016) ★★★ (22 Jan)
13. Advance and Retreat (2016) ★★★ (23 Jan)
14. Bridget Jones' Baby (2016) ★★★★ (29 Jan)
15. Sealed With A Kiss (aka A Country Wedding)(2015) ★★★ (29 Jan)

So, yeah. I've kicked off the year with a load of decidedly average romcoms for the most part.

TV Series
1. Limitless Season 1 ★★★★ (03/01/17 - 09/01/17)
2. Sherlock Series 4 ★★★ (01/01/17 - 15/01/17)
3. Aftermath Season 1 ★½ (04/10/16 - 23/01/17)
4. Hooten & The Lady Series 1 ★★★½ (18/09/16 - 25/01/17)
Sherlock was the only one I watched as it was going on. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I was hoping to.
Really enjoyed Limitless, it was a very stylish show and I liked the way it worked through things (although the Hugging episode was a bit much, even for me). The ending felt rather rushed though, and then I found out it was cancelled which was really disappointing. I'm going to have to try and watch the film at some point though, as I didn't realise it was based on/spun out of a film until afterwards.
Aftermath was... well. Bad. Amusing though it was to have (plot spoilers? I guess?)
every apocalypse under the sun
shoved into one show with (more plot spoilers)
some mythology and psudeoscience along for the ride
, there was really nothing there to make it worth watching. The lead characters being (character spoilers?)
weirdos incapable of interacting with anyone outside of their Family Group or their One True Loves with anything resembling a normal range of human emotions
didn't help either.
Hooten & The Lady is cheesy but incredibly fun viewing. The characters/actors and their chemistry sell it for the most part, although it really seemed to be yelling "ships ahoy! gif this, gif this!" a little too often. Or maybe that was just me. I also liked (character/ending spoilers, ish)
that Edward was completely fine with Alex doing what she loved, even if it involved Hooten, and his complete and utter lack of insecurity even in the face of other people telling him he should be insecure about it. It was surprisingly refreshing to see a show with the potential for all that drama and misunderstanding and jumping to conclusions that you know most shows would run with, and then tilt it over and ignore it in favour of characters who are actually capable of living their own lives and talking to each other like adults (once they get around to it, anyway - I'll admit that that could have been done sooner). I don't think I'd realised how much that was a thing I'd been missing until I saw it
. Really though, it's just fun, and I needed some just fun. I don't know if it's likely to get a second series (and if it doesn't, the ending will work as a closer), but if it does I'll watch it.

Cheers for the reminder, Orthodoxy.
Aye, thanks for updating your post so quick!

And yeah, apologies to everyone that I just bombarded with a random message. I was doing the numbers for the month, but I noticed that something like 47 people hadn't updated their posts (so over 1/4 of our entrants), so I sent reminders to almost all of you. Thanks to all who update!

Omega Ultimus - 2/50 Books | 50/50 Movies

Finished my main goal of watching fifty movies, although I wasn't able to finish The Stranger by Albert Camus like I wanted to because I got sucked into playing video games for a while (which happens only periodically), and also became a lot busier than expected with my new classes. This is where I get to practice my discipline!

Also, I'll probably put down the movies I recommend from this month's watchlist here tomorrow.

Out 1 - 2/50 Books | 9/50 Movies

Books:

1. Swing Time by Zadie Smith
2. Purity by Jonathan Franzen

Movies:

1. Hell or High Water (dir. David Mackenzie, United States, 2016) [7]
2. Mother (dir. Vlado Skafar, Italy / Slovenia, 2016) [6]
3. Blackhat (dir. Michael Mann, United States, 2015) [8]
4. Paterson (dir. Jim Jarmusch, U.S. / France / Germany, 2016) [7]
5. Jackie (dir. Pablo Larrain, Chile / France / U.S., 2016) [3]
6. Cameraperson (dir. Kirsten Johnson, United States, 2016) [7]
7. Silence (dir. Martin Scorsese, U.S. / Taiwan / Mexico, 2016) [8]
8. Into the Inferno (dir. Werner Herzog, U.K. / Germany / Canada, 2016) [7]
9. Split (dir. M. Night Shyamalan, United States, 2016) [6]

With whistle-blowers, nuclear proliferation, and Internet, all playing a major role in the narrative, Franzen seemed apt at the moment.

Doing terrible so far. :(
Saw you have The Bird and the Sword on your Want to Read list. It started strong and then slowly lost its steam with Stockholm syndrome shenanigans and giving special powers a class system. I honestly don't know where the sequel would go since the protagonist has near-omnipotence.

Well, I waited 24 hours from the time that I sent my PMs out to the quarter of ballots that were missing updates, but there are still a bunch missing. Cheers to everyone who updated. Our numbers are down a bit from last year, but I have two suspicions as to why that is. First, people obviously forgot to do their ballots. Second, I suspect the current social climate caused many of us to get so caught up in current events that we pushed some of these things to the back of our to-do lists. But make sure to take care of yourselves! And use the challenge as an opportunity to read/watch up and arm yourself for the coming years!

awesome! any chance you could add how many people this is and the average book/movie per person?

awesome! any chance you could add how many people this is and the average book/movie per person?
Sure thing!

So for reference, we currently have 160 total entries. 25 people haven't put in any data though, so the chart is only showing data from 135 people.

That makes the average 2.6 books and 6.9 movies.
It's a train wreck and we can't look away.
Hah, pretty much. It started driving me crazy though, and I realized I need to force myself to look away every once in a while for my own sanity!

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
My wife and I are going news free this weekend. We need the break.
Yea, it's pretty demoralising. Really keeps you sane to come home to a baby girl with sparkling eyes and a big smile. Keeps you believing in humanity.

I have tried, however, to focus my coming books on themes and stories that are relevant to the world today. Let's see how that pans out.

Watched Breakfast Club this morning and a rewatch of Spirited Away (not counted).

Man Spirited Away is amazing on blu-ray, I haven't seen it in 6 years at least.

Already knocked out 2 films and 1.5 books for February.

Finally saw Kubo & The Two Strings on a plane last week, super bummed that my local cinema didn't show it now. That film deserves a rewatch in better quality.

Also saw half of Birth of a Nation before falling asleep (flight was through the night) and definitely need to start that again on blu-ray.

Going for 365 movies this year.

Done. Catching up on my graphic novels skewed things, and I think I'm going to be over 200 before the year is out.

EDIT: had to add some stuff that I finished up over the weekend.
