Android |OT7| Now With a Whole New Messaging System

GAF I recently upgraded to an android, and don't currently have a data plan.

I set on my phone during startup that I don't want to use any sort of data, but apparently while out today I was on data while playing some game.

Is there any app that can put a hard passwork lock on this nonsense? I see a few but want to know what GAF suggests.

You probably allowed the game you were playing to access your data settings. Just cancel this permission and you should be good to go. If you want to be extra safe just edit your data settings, there should be some IP/DNS settings that are on automatic, just change them to whatever and then your connection won't work even if you enable it by accident.

Man gear s3 is the bomb. Navigating the UI is better than Android and Apple watch.

No load times for the things that matter. Screen is Samsung goodness. Samsung pay is wizardry. I feel like a silicon valley tech asshole.

Only real con is lack of app support but then I never used them much on my apple watch cuz of load times.

S voice also sounds terrible. Like some computer voice from early 2000s.

As predicted every major player in the android space is going with custom chips and that's great for the end user, it sucks for OEMs that cannot afford that and more than anything it sucks for Qualcomm that sees its market shrink. Sure this year they have the first batch of 835s already sold but how much this can last?
Aside that i wonder how much one could trust his/her data with both hardware and software made in China.

Multitasking is a pain imo. Not as seemless as ios. YouTube goes to black for a few seconds when switching into that mode. Many other video apps still aren't updated so that as soon as you deselect that window, it pauses.

Finally got hands on a pixel at best buy and hardware wise it feels like amateur hour.

The side bezels are huge compare to most flagships that aren't Apple. Also the black bezel between the screen and the white bezel are uneven in size. Reminds me of those sub $100 phones out there, but this is $750+

That's not true at all. Where's my split screen mode on iPhone? You can alt tab on Android in a split second.

Last night I had a conference call while out and about and being able to keep an eye on the call as well as important documents at the same time was key. Even if I didn't I could use the double tap shortcut to quickly jump through the apps in a second. You can't do that on iphone yet

I'm hoping that Samsung starts using their Exynos chips on the US versions of the Galaxy s8 lineups.

This is what I've been saying for years. This is actually the first time I've seen anyone acknowledge this in the comments... like anywhere.. Even tech journalist fall into this mistake. That stupid ass misconception and Android is complicated and iOS is much easier to use for everyone. It really all has to do with familiarity, not simply just the ease of use. Android CAN be more complex if you are trying to do complex things. The experience is almost never like that if we're talking about simple OS navigation, which iOS is sort of shitty at compared to Android. That's one of my number one complaints other than the lack of choosing default apps. I had no idea that they handled changing camera settings like that. Their entire settings/badge menu is a complete mess and I never see journalists say shit about it.

Have a dedicated back and multi task button is the better system and way easier for navigation.

It's never been the navigation or UI. It's all the android bullshit like battery drain, wake locks, app permissions, managing background processes, buried ass notification settings (well maybe not this one anymore).

If you ask me what phone I'd give to my grandma or even my mom, it's an iPhone no question. I can use Android just fine myself but i sure as hell don't want to become tech support for my mom.

for older people if they are not downloading something dumb phones are still the best. ton of battery and ease to use. Flip phones as well.

I do not think any of this will be issue at all in any of the new phones. Once you set up download essential apps you should be good to go. There is hardly any need to manage all those stuff. Most of the people do not even know the words you are using in real life. They just use phone to make call, look up weather, chat and play angry birds. This is 95% of elders that I know.

funny enough I feel like i've gotten all these issues on ios as well in recent years. Feel like ios really dropped the ball in stability after ios 7.

iOS no back button is bad
iOS notification is bad
iOS is not even buttery smooth these days.

Imo Android has surpassed iOS by some margin.
But thanks to Apple strong SoC performance, it sorta made iPhone very competitive.

If we're talking UI and UX then iOS is a complete mess. It's definitely not intuitive or as easy to use as people say. I 110% agree with the point that it's all about familiarity at this point. It's probably also biting Apple in the ass because they have to design around that fact so they don't break that familiarity, which leads to it becoming more of a cluttered mess.

I have one problem with my 6P, one of my earphones doesn't work on it (and work everywhere else), and all other earphones work on it. Probably just bad contact, but I have no idea how to fix it. Any ideas?

I was having this discussion an hour or so ago about this, the original pitch of "a smartphone so easy to use that doesn't even need a user manual!" of the first iPhone has been thrown under the bus in these last 4-5 years by Apple.
iOS now is a conglomerate mess of hidden functions and menus just like Android is/was.

I'm sorry but I did smartphone support in a major call centre for over a year. I took thousands upon thousands of calls from the casualest of casuals and it's an absolute fact that iphones were the least complex and easiest for these people. All the iphone calls were extremely simple and usually about the same thing or two whereas the android calls (of which there were shittons despite most people owning iphones) were all complex and varied.

Their customer satisfaction is through the roof for a reason. They're seeing record amount of android to iphone switchers every quarter. They sell way more of a single device than any company on the planet and still continue to grow that number every so often. For a lot of the things people do with their smartphones, the iphone is definitely the easiest to get into and easiest to grasp.

One important factor is that there's very little you can screw up on an iphone, and very little that can go awry. You won't tick off a box in settings that will fuck everything up, you won't have rogue apps, it's a very much what you see is what you get operating system. If you deep dive there is more to it in some places but just the amount of things that can go wrong is very little. Yes now there's more depth in the settings but most of these casuals don't dive into there and even if they did there is very little that will mess things up whereas Android's granular control (Which many love) has the ability to fuck up oh so many things.

I think I wanted to pull my hair out after most android calls that I took whereas Iphone calls were a breeze. Doesn't help that in the android world people jump around OEMs all with different settings and layouts and customizations whereas when you go iphone jumping or upgrading you're generally seeing the same thing. I can't even count how many android calls ended in "my [insert family or friend] has an iphone and never has these issues" or "fuck this im getting an iphone next time". I rarely ever heard it the other way around. I keep in touch with all my buddies there every day at work and they tell me it's the same story and same calls. Literally nothing has changed.

That's not what i am arguing though, the consistency and stability of iOS is something that Android dreams of and this always has been true even if the gap is veeeeery slowly becoming thinner.
What i'm talking about is that up until... let's say iOS 5 one would know every single functionality of the phone easily, you knew how to use 100% of the potential of the phone while now everything is cluttered in menus and submenus and settings and press this in this way if you want this functionality and do that in that way etc. etc.
Before iOS was idiot-proof now instead is filled with this stuff... sure for a tech literate that reads blogs and post in these forums it might be better because it gives more options like Android but that "better" is not an absolute truth.

I have a few questions.

  1. News widgets are important for me right now. What is the best tool for this on Android?
  2. I use the NYT app alot - does the widget for Android have images, or just headlines for articles?
  3. Is there a way to receive and send SMS messages on my laptop?

There's a difference between just turning on a phone and actually using all of the features it provides. I think if I asked a lot of the iPhone users I know questions like "How often do you use Spotlight search?", "What kind of Widgets do you use?", or "Do you use 3D touch often?" they'd look at me stupidly not knowing what that stuff is. It's easy to turn on an iPhone and use it, but the OS itself just isn't simplified anymore because it is bloated with features that aren't easily accessible to the average user.
