The Next Gen Controllers

As the generations of consoles continue to move forward from the times of a couple buttons to shoulder buttons, dpads, thumbsticks, touchpads, motion, rumbles, ect. there has been large strides in what ways we play our games and adding funtionality.

What would you want the baseline controllers of the next generation to add in terms of functionality?

For me I would have to say buttons like the elite controllers even if just a simple couple extra buttons.

Gyro and HD rumble. Nintendo keeps on innovating the control man. How do they do it?

Hopefully Micro and Sony do Gyro next time. Makes shooters waaaay better.

Gyro sensors for FPS, seriously they help a fucking lot, I'm only good at splatoon because of the Gyro.

If the HD rumble is supposedly so good, then that should be adopted for most controllers, a natural evolve of the rumble we all love.

the share button is also a must now.

Xbox One controller has a share button? Did they change the use for one of those two buttons?

Think the poster is missing something minor there, Xbone uses a combo of guide button presses plus a face button to record, slightly more clunky, but functional enough in my experience.

Paddles and / or Grip sensors would be nice.

Rumble is has basically been the same since the PS1 so that is totally in need of a rethink. Rumble Triggers seem like a baby step in the right direction. Havent tried "HD Rumble" yet obviously.

Heck I have wanted a 2 part set up like the Switch that has all your standard buttons and sticks since the Wii. Maybe MS and Sony could try it but not make the controllers baby sized?

1:1 motion control

You need it for VR to make sense. VR without competent motion control is not worth it.

But for TV play 1:1 motion just magnifies the limitations you have with a TV IMO.

Sony has had a gyro in every controller for 10 years

Killzone 2 had gryo aiming. It was dope. Dont know why it didnt catch on, on the platform.

Xbox One Elite level of controller needs to be standard by next generation.

I absolutely love my Xbox One Elite Controller; paddles are nice. Overall, its my favorite controller ever made.
And I think the back button "Grips" on my Steam Controller are interesting.

But as far as new buttons go, none have done it better than the PS4 Nacon Revolution Controller. The new buttons are practically flush with the underside of the controller handles - so they don't intrude with how we traditionally hold a controller. But they are positioned perfectly, enabling the index finger to just simply press down ever so slightly to activate the button press. I have yet to accidentally activate the buttons and I now much prefer them to R1/L1 (or Xbox equivalent 'Bumper') buttons.

What i REALLY want:
-Steam like level of customization at the OS level, you can change so many things on that thing, its great

The next generation of controllers is here already, its called the Steam Controller. Nothing beats those trackpads.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I'd like customizable controllers out of the box. Like what the X1 Elite controller can do but applied to all basic controllers. Want offset sticks? Switch the Dpad and the left stick. Want different sticks or face buttons? Swap them out. Want to use a track ball instead of a the right stick to aim? You go right ahead and swap one out for the other. Looking for a heavier controller, then add more weight or take out some if you want to lighten it up. Batter not cutting it? Then put in a larger style that can last longer. That sort of idea.

Basically a DS4, but with significantly better life and possibly the HD rumble (if it's as good as people say it is.

Really wonderful controller, in particular because it is so, so versatile. I even like the touchscreen, though it's underutilized.

I also have a hard time imagining really liking a controller moving forward that doesn't have a headphone jack. I suppose that will go away eventually, but wow, bar none my favorite feature of the DS4 and I'm glad XB1 added it in. Total game changer for me, to be able to play on my huge TV late at night without waking up the family just using any old pair of headphones.

Seems like everyone has a contribution this generation for the future

- share button
- paddles
- HD rumble

I see those sticking around. Not sure if the touch pad or trigger rumble will continue to be a thing

Edit: add profile switching to the list too. Great feature.

Hell yes. Esspecially the customization. The Steam controller ain't perfect, but boy is it great for customizing.

Give me a wired option, please ;_;

Why not just use a long cable? Or are you concerned about latency?

This is what I hoped the ds4 and xb1 would have instead of, or in addition to, bumpers.

i think dualshock 4 is fine how it is outside of battery life. I don't want it to be any more expensive just to control the game by adding gimmicks. leave that for third party controllers

If the DS5 has a light bar too I hope we can at least turn it off. I don't know why Sony bothered letting us dim it and not just let us straight up disable it.

Bluetooth, share button, HD rumble, optional paddles, custom sticks and profile switching. That would do it for me.

Basically, if you rolled all the above into an XB1 Elite pad it would be my perfect controller. It's already my favourite to hold as it is so a few extra features would be fantastic.

WAIT.

Wait. Wait wait wait.

When did the definition of "paddles" with respect to controllers change? The literal last time I heard that term used in this context, they referred to the rotational controllers used for Pong-style games on the Atari 2600. Did Valve really appropriate the word to mean something completely different? Is that like what they refer to the touchpads as now?

I don't have OCD, but it would be seriously triggered right now. :p
