Does this generation have a franchise?

I don't really know how to define what I'm talking about. A franchise? A series? Basically last generation we had Gears, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Dragon Age, etc. I think all 4 of those trilogies started within the first 3 or so years of the XB360/PS3's lifecycle.

I think this current generation started in 2014 or so and now its 2017 and I can't think of any series that started on this generation. Is Watch Dogs a series even if the first and second games really have nothing to do with each other and the games feel more apart than alike?

Does this generation have that type of franchise yet? Is it coming? Is it ME4? Will Horizon be a series? Is there a franchise that came out that I'm missing?

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

You forgot Assassin's Creed from last generation.

As far as this generation, depends what you mean by franchise.

I think Overwatch is the closest thing as far as far-reach phenomenons, but it's a Blizzard game so it means it's going to be supported as a single product for a long time, it's not going to rack up sequels like the games you listed.

TitanFall, Splatoon, Watch Dogs, ....that's all that comes to mind. Maybe if Doom gets a sequel?

Splatoon is the first that comes to mind.

I hope Titanfall becomes one.

Overwatch, certainly. If Siege counts as its own thing, that too!

What a good gen for shooters!

Destiny and overwatch. Well see what happens with horizon but yea the drop off in AAA household name titles is definitely there compared to last gen.

Splatoon, easily.

Destiny makes a strong case as well as Overwatch.

We'll see if titanfall 3 gets a bump from the last game's apparently stellar campaign, but I'm not holding my breath.

Splatoon, Overwatch, Titanfall, Watch_Dogs, Gravity Rush... Nioh has the potential to become a franchise. There's stuff like Yokai Watch, Bravely Default as well.

Would Overwatch still count as franchise if Blizzard doesn't release a sequel during the rest of the gen?

I'd say so because it also has a ton of cross-media stuff. The shorts, merchandise, crossovers in other Blizzard games...

In addition to the mentioned ones: The Division, Gravity Rush, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Nioh, The Order, Horizon, For Honor. All likely to be expanded and/or improved/fixed in sequels. Basically Sony & Ubisoft.

Sony's Spiderman, Amy Hening's Star Wars and Days Gone have potential of becoming successful new series too.

Watchdogs is a series too, but like Destiny or Titanfall debuted last gen, as cross-gen. So not sure if to count them.

I would say Shovel Knight, is very popular, has merchandising and is getting support with new content.

Yes, a game doesn't have to have a sequel to be considered a franchise as Blizzard seem to be raking in money with Overwatch merchandising.

Yeah, Destiny, even though we had only one so far and it was cross gen.

But who knows, maybe we'll all remember Horizon, Nioh and others as generation defining franchises in 5 years. We're still in the middle of it.

Yeah makes sense. WoW doesn't sequels either and I wouldn't argue it.

OverWatch, Destiny, Rocket League, Splatoon, Division, Watch Dogs, Rainbow Six

We've shifted to spending more time and money on single games. Less sequels.

It's an awesome trend - give me more service games and less yearly releases.

Grow Home/Grow Up definitely meets your definition since it has two entries already out this generation.

Garden Warfare, Watch Dogs and Titanfall have last-gen versions so it depends on if you're talking hardware generations or release years.

I also want to say, I feel like we're going to see not necessarily a lot of mega-franchises as we usually think of it, but a lot of single games that reach well-known/iconic status. Indie games like Stardew Valley or The Witness or Firewatch and other one-offs like that aren't "franchises" in the same way as Mass Effect and stuff were for last gen, but I feel like we're going to look back on them as generation definers in their own right. This on top of the whole rise of service games.

Horizon and Nioh will have multiple sequels. I imagine Nioh will end up having 7+ games if it sells as much as I think it will, Team Ninja is known for their heavy support

Overwatch
Splatoon
Pillars of Eternity
Destiny
Titanfall
Divinity: Original Sin
Shovel Knight

... Hopefully Torment: Tides of Numenera

Not bad so far, I'd say.

Splatoon and Overwatch I'd say are the 2 standout ones

Rocket League is another, but I'm not sure you could do a Rocket League 2 and garner half the amount of success it got. Kinda like Minecraft, in a way. It's just this 'oh, you gotta get this' game. It's an enigma. Ever present.

I guess I missed titanfall and destiny is becoming a franchise, but what about shovel knight or overwatch makes them franchises? I can't see an Overwatch 2 getting made anytime soon. Divinity was on last generation as well right?

And splatoon would count as well I guess but is the Wii U current generation? It seems that the switch is but the Wii U isn't so I think that falls out of my little arbitrary definition of a current generation franchise.

Ori? If it gets a sequel. Bloodborne? If it gets a sequel
Splatoon is a successful new franchise. Destiny 2 comes out this year.

Shovel Knight and Overwatch both receive such good ongoing support and additional content that they can pretty much be viewed as franchises without the inevitable sequels being announced yet. You may be right about Divinity tho.

Wii U is current gen, so Splatoon counts.
