ArsTechnica: Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

I am new to all of this stuff and just started tinkering with my NES Classic this past weekend. One question:

How do I get art for each game in place of those blank cartridges?

Under File click download covers for all games.

If you don't like a cover you can click on a game, go to boxart. Either google (and chose your cover) for an image or browse the image from your computer.

Geez, that's embarrassingly easy. Thank you!

I can't believe how quickly this has moved on, it initially looked like soldering would be required for this but we may well be beyond that now.
The hardest part is still finding a Famicom Mini by far...

Three months and still looking T_T

I love what's been done here, but I can't help but feeling now that we are just in Pi territory. Earlier in the thread, people were all "Why not just get a Pi?" and getting shot down, because we had a cool unique NES machine here. You could load a few of your own most loved games on and it was neat. Now with Retroarch on here, being able to change the UI music, load over 900 games on, and all that stuff... Why not just get a Pi?

I still want a NES Mini, but yeah, I'll be just adding 30 of my fave NES games to the existing 30 and calling it a day.

(From a purely "look what we can do with this", though, this is all awesome!)

It's been said repeatedly we don't care. We're in this thread because we want the mini. Simple as. Please stop with this Pi bs for the millionth time.

I'm starting to get buyer's remorse since I paid about the equivalent of $120 for my mini, but I'll hold out a bit more since the hacks are getting more and more interesting. And it's still a nifty collectible.

Would fan translations and earthbound zero work too?

Generally, they should do. I have fan translations for Final Fantasy 2 & 3 and they work. A couple of translations I couldn't upload because they changed the mapper to unsupported ones, but that seems to be an uncommon situation.

Earthbound Zero works.

For new, in box, yes. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, I got two of them used for $45~

2 used for $45 is pure fantasy level, maybe a piece, but they are amazing controllers. Can't argue quality.

And to address others:

8bitdo fails at diagonal inputs making Contra unplayable.

Wii Classic Controller is certainly not the worst nintendo controller ever made, that title goes to the N64's fragile analog stick + ackward c-buttons. It's dpad is every bit as good as any other they've made.

You just saved me some money and possible future headaches. That is the worst when a controller doesn't detect diagonals properly because I love shooters.

Yeah I had that controller on my radar, but not anymore. I thought it was a well-regarded controller? That's a fatal flaw.

I don't understand how companies still can't get a simple thing like a dpad right in this day and age.

8bitdo have fixed the diagonals, my latest NES one is perfect. Older ones you can modify with tape. It never affected me anyway, seems it only hurts people who have a really 'rough' (?) style of play, I always hit my directions precisely, - hence why many people never noticed. I didn't believe the diagonal issue until I tested it and found it was true.

N64 controller was great too, my near launch controller works perfectly because I didn't abuse it.

I've enabled the optin that disables the epilepsy protection for all games, however it seems to still be there on the original 30 games (like the dying screen in Zelda II, or the boss selection flashes in Mega Man 2). I didn't notice anything on the other added games (one of them being a Zelda II hack) so they're fine, but what should I do that protection is properly disabled on all games, including the original 30?

I was also wondering if there any plan to improve the sound emulation on NES games, like getting proper sound effects on some games and remove the sound delay.

I finally got Retroarch on it and got past the C6 error. But now it doesn't find any content despite me putting some ROMs in the right place. I load the core then look for content but it doesn't find any.

I'm stumped.

Which translations did you end up using for 2 & 3?

I bought an 8bitdo SFC controller a month ago - no issues with diagonals.

Reading reviews of these controllers; they seem to have random manufacturer defects, but if you contact them they'll send you a good set for free.

Amazon has quite a few "bad reviews" with an "update" that the company sent a replacement that works great.

For FF 2, the Demiforce 1.03 translation.

For FF 3 the Alex Jackson, Neill Corlett and SoM2Freak translation. Mine says R2 (release 2?) but the version on RomHacking.net is newer (2013). I beat the game back in March 2007 so I would have grabbed whatever was the latest at the time from RH.

I think these are the only compete translations for the respective games. I might be wrong though.

Finally, finally got my Mini and updated it with my NES collection.

I'm in shock at how easy that was to do.

Internet, you're crazy. What sorcery will you do with the Switch??

Thanks for the info. I tried to use the FF3 patch by Chaos Rush off romhacking.net but it wouldn't get past the character naming screen. Kept freezing up. I'll try this translation next.

So is now a good time to jump in and try this? It seems like things are constantly changing here.

Also, could we update the OP to have the latest and greatest directions and things you can do?

Another new video, this one looks at the included Folder Manager in v2.12.

Hakchi2 2.12 RC3 Folders Manager, gives you total control of Mini NES Gui (YouTube)

You could try 2.11 now a that's the current build but if you're confident enough you could compel the work in progress version of 2.12. It's close to completion tough so if you don't know what you're doing, you'll probably only have to wait a few days for the final release.

Okay, I think I will wait. Now is the one that does only NES or SNES also? Or can you only do one or the other?

The current version does support SNES games but it's done via booting up a version of Retro Arch on the NES Mini.

The upcoming release changes that in that SNES games will show up just as NES games do right now. You'll still have access to the more in depth Retro Arch menus that you can see in the video posted above if you want more control over emulation, filters, etc but the idea is that you don't have to if don't want to.

The versions of the software that people are using which show some of the additions that v2.12 is getting is being updated pretty rapidly at the moment and it does seem to be largely a matter of tidying things up and making it work better. If you have a look at this list on GitHub you'll notice that the individual status of the different parts is showing that there's a lot of tidying up at the moment and some parts are ready to go. The majority of those have reached that status in the past day so there hopefully shouldn't be too much to go now.

There's be nothing wrong with using v2.11 now, it would at least let you mess around with it and hopefully sort out any issues that you may have. If you don't want to do that then I'd just recommend getting the games that you want to add sorted out and ready and maybe find some cover art if you don't want to go with the auto find option in hakchi2.

EDIT:

And, just like magic, it's ready. 2.12 finally released!

Brief version notes, there's a lot more if you follow the link.

[*]Update FAQ
[*]Translation tool
[*]Maybe some feature to upload only changed/new games, not all games
[/LIST]

Retroarch is working great for me thanks to the hard work of Cluster and Madmonkey. The only issue I'm having is with GBA games which run slow. Does anyone know if there's settings I can mess with to make the games run better? Gunstar Super Heroes and Star Wars Episode III run slow, Sonic Advance seems to crash or something when I pick a character.

I removed all my games and reinstalled the 30 pre-installed games and added about a dozen SNES games, everything seemed to transfer across as it should but when I try any of the SNES game it just sends me back to the Home Screen.

All the NES games work fine.

From what I've read, I should be doing something with this file? ClusterM/retroarch-clover

Does anybody know the setup by step instructions of what to do with that after I've downloaded it?

Thanks.

EDIT:
Don't worry about that, I've sorted it. There's a guide here and here.

Just got the new hakchi 2.12 and everything is so simple. And with the RetroArch mod, I only uploaded Super Mario All Stars and Vs. Super Mario Bros. (the version in the arcade) and they work perfectly!

A different version of the RetroArch mod which removes the SNES blurring.

http://www.filedropper.com/retroarch-nosmoothhmod

Unzip it and add it to user_mods in the main hakchi2 folder, that;s the same place you placed the retroarch.hmod folder earlier. You'll then have to deactivate the old version and activate this version in the Modules tab of hakchi. At the moment, it only seems to work in Pixel Perfect mode but that's being investigated now.

It's simple to do but if anybody can't work it out from this and the guides in my earlier post then ask and I'll try and help.

So if I go ahead and download this version..I can add SNES games just like I do NES games..just go to add roms just like nes games? And what would happen it automatically puts the files into designated folders? How about the artwork can I add that to to each game?

So I'm not checking progress for a few days and we get all kinds of console support? O_O

That's pretty amazing! I'm gonna be waiting for the games to show up like the NES games, but then there's no holding back for me. SNES alone would have been great, but Neo GEO and GB/A too? I would not have believed it if someone had told me when the NES Mini released.

First of all you need to download the latest version of hakchi2 from here - 2.12 finally released!

Once you've installed that, download "RetroArch" from here - retroarch-clover

And, "RetroArch No Smooth Mod" from here - retroarch-nosmoothhmod

UPDATE
I'd recommend installing this .hmod file rather than the first one I posted. This one is an updated version of retroarch-clover, if you've installed the first version then you'll need to replace that .hmod file with this one.
The default version of RetroArch enabled bilinear filtering on all SNES games.

There's mow an updated version which disables that in all of the three filter modes. You can get that .hmod file here. I've given it a very quick go and it's my favourite one by far out of the three that I've posted.

Release notes from that version
  • Added Stella core for Atari 2600 emulation
  • System dir is now '~/system'
  • Core info dir is now '~/info', also added info files. They're really useful if you use RetroArch's GUI.
  • RGUI default browser dir is now '/usr/share/games/nes/kachikachi' instead of '/'
  • Disabled bilinear filtering for every preset
  • Enabled integer scaling
  • Greyscale palette for Gambatte core
END

Uncompress them both and add you should have two .hmod files. Move both of those to the user_mode folder in hakchi2. You'll then need to activate which ever version of RetroArch you want, it;s simply down to whether you like the blurring or not. you do this under the Modules tab inside the hakchi program.

Only have one activated at time, if you want to change the one that you're using then deactivate it in the Modules tab and activate the other.

Then you're ready to go and its simply a matter of adding your .sfc ROMs to hakchi just as you did with the .nes ROMs before. As before, the ROMs have to be uncompressed before adding them.

There are options as to how it sorts the games into folders including a custom one where you can place them wherever you want.

There's an option to search Google for all games or a single game in hakchi or you can add your images to individual games. I'll be doing it that way when I find suitable images as the automatic search doesn't always bring up uniformed results for all games.

There is default cartridge artwork for and games that you haven't added images to though.
Then you should be ready to sync as normal.

Thanks so much for the info..went ahead and downloaded both files with the Retro one I see this
retroarch.hmod
and inside there there are some files not sure what I am supposed to do with that..I always have to whenever there is a new hatcki update to start from scratch with the NES Mini in order to put everything back in which I dont mind just dont want to mess it up..I assume the games work just fine from the SNES..I know there is a list out for working games for the NES just haven't seen one for the SNES, Genesis, or N64..I saw one post where someone had an image of the consoles when they boot the console so you can have all SNES games in one folder, and etc etc not sure how to do that..Is there also a limit as to how many games from each console I can have on the NES Mini..for the NES I have about 70 games..for the SNES I have about 20, and so on

I was able to add an SNES rom but of course the controller doesn't have enough buttons to make it playable. Is there any alternative to this? Wireless if possible.

If you get an 8bitdo adaptor you can use a range of controllers. I don't have one for the mini (yet) but I have one for my actual NES and I use my Wii U pro controller on that. It supports most modern controllers though (but not Xbox for some reason).
