Has the PS4 surpassed the previous three consoles in terms of quality? (Answer: no.)

I have to say, given the amount of incredible games we have seen so far this year alone (Gravity Rush, Nioh and Horizon in a few short weeks), has this generation got the PS1/2 beaten for sheer quality? When you throw in multi platform games too, is it fair to say that this is the greatest PlayStation ever? If not now, God of War and TLOU2 on the way as well as FF7 Remake, along with Days Gone if that turns out to be a great game too, have Sony actually managed to live up to the hype or even surpass what was expected at launch?

The PS4 OS convenience is the best in console history.
As someone who has gamed on both consoles & PC's for a long time it has always been a pain how feature-less and behind consoles have been. And this ultimately affected the games of the previous generations, most noteworthy the PS2 generation when PC online was mature & tech like programmable shaders a thing (hence an opportunity for Xbox to enter with some of these elements). PS2 brought heaps of great IP's and 2001 was mad but I feel it's the PlayStation that went out on date the fastest (despite continued commercial success). The PS3 on its end had all the aspiring technologies but the most cumbersome and slow OS, a whole generation of maturation efforts.

The PS4 is for me when consoles surpassed PC gaming with Netflix-like effortless access to all the unified service-features I would want. System handles everything in a neat Async fashion On or Off. And ultimately this enhances the whole gaming experience.

I'm definitely in the 'gaming has never been better' camp.

edit: Though I would say dl-gifting is still a noteworthy missing feature.

Nope. You'll still have to go a long way to surpass the PS2. I might be willing to say that launch-aligned, it's got a slight edge over PS1.

I don't think it's surpassed any of them yet. It's not far behind ps3. But still needs of a couple more years of great games before it can be considered ps1/ps2 level

i really wish people would not compare them.

in general i think PS4 is better than PS3 so far just because the amount of games i enjoy is significantly more so far in the PS4's life cycle than the PS3 at the same period last gen.

But PS1 and PS2 were completely different eras and its apples to oranges

Not yet for me but it has huge potential to in the next few years with some of the games it has coming. It will definitely surpass PS3 for me. PS2 will be hard.

PS4 is worthwhile console, but I don't think it has a chance to surpass the previous consoles yet. Probably by the end of its lifespan.

While I disagree with many of the games you've put up as reasons (like reboots and remakes matter), I think it's surpassed the PS2.

I was never really into JRPGs, so the PS2 didn't have much of interest for me, in comparison to the GCN and Xbox. I'm definitely in the minority though.

If Detroit, Wild, Spiderman, TLOU Part II, God of War, Day's Gone, Death Stranding, Shenmue 3, Ni No Kuni 2, NieR Automata are all good ... it will approach PS3

But PS1/PS2 are god tier

I will say that the quality of Sony's first-party lineup has never been higher, and has come a long, long way since the PS2 days. For a long time third-party games really carried Sony platforms but nowadays their first-party games are "can't miss" for me in the same way that Nintendo's are.

Not yet, but I do believe at the end of this gen it will have the best library of games available to any console.

There is not enough licensed games and shovelware.

I'm serious.

I fondly remembering playing games like Rugrats Studio Tour, SpongeBob SquarePants SuperSponge, King Kong the Official Game of the Movie, and so on in the 5th and 6th gen. They filled a niche that is left barren today. Sure, a lot of them sucked, but a few were great.

By the end of the gen, PS3 was my GOAT. I do think it surpassed PS2. PS4 isn't there yet.

PS4 could get there, it's a better console that PS3 by far. The question is really whether the industry can deliver enough quality, original AAA games by the end of the gen.

PS2 was just ridiculous, easy to forgot as over time everything eventually got ported to other platforms, but it's library was untouchable for it's time. Has so many GOAT games, a lot of which were exclusive.

It's nowhere near the PS2 but probably better than the PS3 for Bloodborne and The Last Guardian alone.

I don't have the affinity for PS1 a lot seem to have as most of its library has aged really horribly.
