Just saw it.

Holy shit that movie actually lived up to the hype.

the end when Rod pulled up in the "cop" car was the most poignant scene in the whole film. As a black dude, that shit resonated with me so hard. The theater audience I had also let out a sigh of relief once everyone saw he'd be ok

Watching in Dolby Cinema/Atmos after work tomorrow. The trailer was enough to pull me in and that rarely happens.

2 couples walked out when I saw it, but I just got back. Very good film

Saw 2 white folk walk out during the outdoor party scene 😂

I know Ive said this in one of these threads but, an old couple in front me when I was buying tickets went off about how inappropriate a movie like this was by todays standards and the content was just out of place in today's society. As soon as they left the girl selling tickets went off, my girlfriend and I were just like "yeah...thats exactly why a movie like this needs to exist today".

Walter Chaw's review has dropped.

It's the good stuff, as per usual.

I've seen the trailer like 3 times? I don't really remember shit in it, and what I do remember is basically just the general premise: Black guy meets his white girlfriend's parents, and it turns out their house is a fucking freakshow of racial horror.

I can't imagine how many times you'd have to watch the ad to get a good sense of whatever the fuck is actually happening in the entire movie. Maybe if you come home AFTER you watch the movie, and run the trailer again, it seems like something got spoiled? But that's not really how spoilers work. If you have to watch the trailer AFTER you've already seen the movie to think "Did I get spoiled?" then no, you didn't get spoiled.
Well that's good, thanks.

Surprised conservatives aren't lapping this up considering it makes fun of white liberals more than anything.

"Inappropriate In today's society"? Suuuure lady. 2030. 2050. Year 3050 maybe?🙄

Double Toasted got me hyped for this.

A lead in a thriller/horror that doesn't act like he has no brains and a plot that doesn't pull out plot aspects out of thin air? Count me in!

So hyped to see this, but doesn't seem to be available in my country (Sweden) and I can find no plans for a later release either ... :(

Honestly,
It was easily the most powerful moment of the movie when the TSA car pulled up and the entire theater had the same exact thing in mind with thinking that it was going to be a cop who would shoot him. When it was revealed to be his friend, one guy threw his arms up and almost everyone gave a collective sigh of relief. Its unreal how telling that moment was of our culture's concepts of race and police are.

Great post. Totally agreed.
The sprint towards the ending felt a bit off given then brilliant pacing leading up to it, but that was an incredible moment and made it all worthwhile. My half full theater had a similar reaction, but I still wish I waited for a later, more packed screening instead of going at 11am.

What an amazing film.

I have to say, as a white guy I feel weird liking it as much as I do. Not because I went expecting not to, but with the themes of appropriation, me liking it is technically somewhat problematic. The point is that I should feel uncomfortable, though, which is part of why it's so good.

I get that. But I think to a point you have to just let go and relax. Appreciate the message and be self aware, but don't get paranoid.

The thing I enjoy most about the movie is just how well directed it is. There is so many scenes that convey so much information visually about the setting and characters. It's great.

Yeah, my theater had a similar reaction of
"awww" which immediately turned into "YEAAAAAAH!!" when they saw the "Airport" sign on the side. Got heightened by that scene at the beginning with the cop because it established that the cops in that area are sketchy.

Great movie, lived up to and exceeded all my expectations. I'm glad no punches were pulled.

Between this and Split, Im surprised by the quality of movies out recently. Normally this time of year is when all the poorly reviewed crap no one wants to see is sent off to die.

Just got out of it. Loved it!!

I loved how the twist changed so many of the previous scenes. The cop wanting to see his ID for one. Would have added him in the system as being with the gf right before he disappeared. The movie is full of that recontextualizing

Nah, it's shorter than that. Closer to 1:50 I think. (Which is odd, because I saw someone mention 2:03 online when I checked before going to the theatre).

You guys keep forgetting about the trailers and how they effect runtime. The movie itself is the time stated on the wiki page.

Blumhouse is a random fucking company. This, Split, Oujija 2, Whiplash. They give out some good movies and yet, make some shit (Jem, Oujija 1, Gallows)

My theater erupted in applause when the
friend stepped out of the car.
Been a while since I've seen that kind of reaction.

The reaction to this in my theater was fucking ludicrous. Like, the place just straight up erupted into applause and cheers.

Shit was Hulk/Loki levels of crowdpleasing.

Was the cop sketchy or was the cop actually helping Chris is some weird ironic way? If he ran his name in the system, that will be the last place known where Chris was at. So let's say the operation actually went through and his friend filed a missing person report. The last known location would be in that area thus screwing up the family undercover operation due to all the police and detective presence. Wouldn't be surprised if the cop noticed Rose with alot of black men driving to her house and noticed the missing reports and linked it to her family but didn't have any evidence? If he run Chris through the system then he'll have evidence that rose family had something to do with it thus getting enough evidence go properly investigate
