Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass subscription service

Hmm... I honestly think I like that approach better than what you suggested. Right now my "ready to install" section is full of sports games that I'll never touch. I'd much rather have that stuff segregated into its own area so that I can keep track of what I actually own vs. what I "rent".

To each his/her own though.
I just like to use the "Hide From List" option, so that everytime I look there, I get a complete list of games available for me to download that I'm actually interested in. It's a useful feature, especially once GWG started loading up on the 4 games per month.

The water is being tested. The day will come when content is locked behind individual publisher subscriptions and eventually whole games themselves.

Loot crates were a trial balloon for a service model. It's an infection, a pestilence. Consumer rights laws aren't robust enough to prevent abuse.

Lol. So you still WANT to use Blockbuster and netflix us an "infection"?

If Xbox owned Gaikai they might have went for streaming too.

Gaikai wasn't unique in what it offered, Ms could have likely gone the same route had they felt it was viable, howbwr gamers didn't like the idea of being always online, so it doesn't appear to fit in the with "new Taste of Xbox".

Gaikai's patents revolved around having a plug-in less compatibility with web browsers. That was the only part that couldn't be dealt with indentically. Gaikai's acquisition was never to bolster the existing PlayStation business , it was to bring PlayStation gaming to people without Playstations, to help you buy a Sony TV over a Samsung TV.

I bet they'll stop giving away Xbox Live passes, and provide one month free trial of this from now on.

Also, let's see a year down the line what games they add. If it's like EA Access then you may not need to buy certain first party titles anymore.

Makes me wonder if they're going to announce the 360 emulator for the PC.

And it does say "Windows 10 devices," so I wonder how they're going to make this enticing for non-Xbox users considering the lack of content for the W10 Store.

For Xbox owners it will be a great deal at least.

So you could theoretically rent 100 games for just $10. Obviously there wouldn't be time to beat them all in one month, but still this is an amazing deal.

may be ok but now you really dont own those games

I think we all realize a subscription service is the future and they all want to be the go to one.
I'm fine with that. Looking at my digital and physical collection, I wouldn't notice if 90% of it vanished overnight. Those are games that, good or bad, I won't go back to again.

Instead of paying $10 for a game on sale, beat it and probably never think about it again, I could pay the same $10 for a month of service that'd allow me to beat that game and play others for a month.

Seems cool. Certainly a reason I'd actually buy an XBone for now. I don't keep games when I'm done with them so I could enjoy the back catalogue for a few months and not have paid much for doing so. Other than buying the console. Not sure there's enough I'd enjoy still though and lack of first party games I care for from MS going forward.

But still a good deal if you have the system.

Question is how comprehensive will they be on the 360 catalogue? Would this be the new Xbox Live Arcade? Seeing as that scene has been very quiet these past few years...

Why can't Sony offer something like this throw in some PS2 classics as well and they would be onto a winner...

I think this is a great option for those that don't have a lot of income or don't feel like purchasing physical copies of these old titles. Luckily XBL has much better downloading than PSN does.

Spend 10 dollars, have access to 100+ games for a month. Seems like pretty good incentive for deciding what console to buy.

This is one of the top-requested games on Xbox Uservoice, so I imagine they're thinking about it.

I would be surprised if something like it never came back. It seems like a great opportunity to use AI (MS is investing a lot here) and Bing (all the info they've indexed) to create something that more or less runs itself.

Yeah I know. Apparently the old service was expensive to run which is why they ultimately cancelled it. But if they made it a subscription to cover the costs and then some, it would obviously work providing there were enough interest.

Xbox interactive game show for $4.99 a month with a rotating set of games played each weekend. Something like that. Win stuff from single digital downloads to full Xbox packages, or even more!

Sounds like the original vision of the xbox, just done in a more realistic way.

I don't see the parallels with that, but I will say that Xbox One would probably be sitting on quite a few more sales if this kind of service was announced back in 2013 instead of what was revealed. But this is definitely a move to get more people hooked into their ecosystem long-term, I think it's smart and a really good value if done right. Hopefully it spurs Sony and Nintendo to follow suite. Competition is great,

why are some people comparing PSNow with this? it has barely nothing to do with this.

it's a download-only service for XB1 (I guess 360 BC titles too) such as EA Access (or the download / offline mode for Netflix), but PSNow it's just a streaming service only for PS3 titles, not PS4 titles, and its performance depends of several factors, specially of your internet connection, such as OnLive, with all of its cons.

Yeah, I don't understand it either.

PSNow is made more for people WITHOUT Playstations in mind, and more for those with Sony Smart TVs or Sony Tablets.

Your dream has come true
All the sports games are now not in my ready to install list

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment,
Capcom,
SEGA,
SNK CORPORATION

I mean, you had my money there, the others are kind of a bonus.

Really hope we will see further support from these companies in particular with BC. They all have games right now that are unavailable and highly requested (Tales of Vesperia, Binary Domain & Vanquish, a bunch from Capcom, and KoFXIII) and adding them to the service along with MS's own first party 360 games (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Crackdown 1&2, Fable series, etc.) would make the price an absolute steal for last gen games alone.

And MS, if you get OG Xbox games included in this?

And get the 360 emulator up and running on W10?

And package all these services (Game Pass, EA Access, XBL Gold) together with every Scorpio purchase?

Might get a stew going.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly they put new releases on the service. If its just a few months after release I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't do this service instead of buying games full price.

It could basically be the Netflix for gaming. The only bummer is EA isn't on the list (I'm sure due to them having their own similar service) and I'm wondering how many other pubs are going to go the EA route down the road.

Spent the last hour digesting this. $10 may not seem like a lot, but that's actually quite a bit of money over the year. My Netflix sub has been on cruise control for the last 8 years, because its always being used in the house by my wife and daughter or on the road with smartphones and tablets. EA Access works because its so cheap at $30/yr. I rarely even play the games, but I don't mind paying just to have the access "no pun". There should also be a Gold discount at $7.99/month or something.

I've been waiting for this. How much for the subscription that includes new games :p

I highly doubt there will be any new games.

So don't subscribe for the whole year. Subscribe only when you're gonna play it and you could cut it down to probably half the price.

Dunno how much it's going to cost in Mexico, but Xbox has held a competitive price even with the increase of the US Dollar.

That's pretty much the main reason I stopped buying from the PS Store with my best friend and our shared account, games got really damn expensive and we just bought the BF1+TF2 pack for our XB1's for about $40-41, while it's $49 in the PS4, since they strictly use USD.

Hey, it's eight dollars, I know, but it counts. :p Plus the gift cards often go on sale here sooooo <3

I wonder if other 3rd party publishers will follow suit and offer their own subscription service to play their back catalogs.

Pretty cool you can now pick up an Xbox and not pay for a full priced game until your happy with one of the games as part of the $10 a month fee.

The day of buying all new games on launch maybe a thing of the past

I do think they should stop allowing some of the really bad games to even hit the platform but hopefully pricing and sales will be more common.

If MS gets more and more 360 games up and always on the service then I'd be very happy with that.

If they have the best looking and playing games on their system it will be yet another reason for me to make changes away from playstation.
