iFixit teardown reveals what's inside a Nintendo Switch

Now that Nintendo's newest console is on store shelves you may be familiar with the outside of it, but what's inside? The crew at iFixit has completed its teardown of the Switch, pulling apart the console and those Joy-Con controllers. Within, they predictably came across its NVIDIA Tegra CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 16Wh battery.

That dock has nothing in it. It's like a GBA, or PSV to tv solution with a stand.

James : "Its a piece of fucking PLASTIC!"

I guess they just threw something quickly together to field accusations that they were not into the console business anymore?

It really feels like the console part of the device was slapped on.

Nintendo appears to be future proofing from packaging to hardware enclosure. That extra cavity in the dock could perhaps one day have internals for an sli graphics set-up with the 2x Tegra X1 when docked and Nintendo will sell this as an upgrade down the line?? Otherwise it just makes no sense to have so much extra space inside the dock.

It needs to keep the tablet stable and have a decent form factor

That's quite the stretch lol

Speaking of docks I still find it crazy that you can't hook up a USB-C to HDMI cable directly to the Switch and have it work.

Or because the console will look tiny compared to the WiiU if it's form fitting and less people will believe it's a $300 device.
It will never seem premium in the dock. Definitely feels worthy of the price in handheld mode.

Not really. Fundamentally it can be done and down the track their custom X1 chip will cost them less so it also makes business sense as they can sell this upgrade for a premium and make good profit. Nintendo is no stranger to the expansion pak concept. But yeh to be honest it's just wishful thinking :p lol

Since there's screen scratching issues with the dock I would probably make some kind of dock modification to prevent that. Dock seems to have fairly simple insides so it shouldn't be too hard.

The dock's price is actually cheaper than most USB C to hdmi/usb/power solutions (and prety significantly so).

A quick Amazon search shows the first result at 19€ (USB-C to HDMI + USB 3.0 + charging) going as low as 12€. The "docking stations" for recharging phones and tablets are 7-10€. Even at 30€/$ the Switch-dock would still be significantly overpriced compared to the markup of two separate retail products.

USB to HDMI is a separate standard called MHL (Mobile High-definition Link) and is not a mandatory part of the USB standard. A lot of phones support MHL but that's pretty much it, most USB devices do not support MHL.

When I get mine I'd probably sand the inside walls of the dock and slap on some thicker microfiber lining.

So it is a Tegra?

Not a X1? Maxwell? Pascal?

You do realize those titles are still Tegra right? So far we only under the assumption that its a modified Tegra X1 chip which is based on maxwell architecture and not shrunk down to 16nm which would technically make it pascal

Blower fan huh?

People are going to complain about fan noise with comparisons like OG Xbox 360 / PS4 jet engine sounds.

edit: Looks like there are a few videos of people complaining about it.

This is probably the first portable gaming device Nintendo made with a fan.

Are there ARM tablets sold out there that have fans?

Is it only utilised in docked mode? I haven't heard mine yet.

This just feels like an excuse though. If USB c docks are expensive - then don't bloody use USB C as your dock solution! They could easily have gone with a proprietary dock like with pretty much every other handheld they've made, which would split out HDMI and power for much less cost. What is the practical benefit of going with USB C?

Looks like the HD Rumble unit makes good contact with the chassis. I guess that's good enough to transmit haptic feedback through the whole unit.

I was thinking much bigger mod. Like taking out all the electronics out and 3d printing new dock where the Switch sits in 45 decree angle on the dock with nothing covering the screen.

So the HD Rumble is just one motor. I though it would be multiple motors around the joy-con.

Is that metal housing for the analog stick? On the blue (left) controller that is right up by the top of what looks like the wireless antenna. I wonder if that's partly why the left controller seems to have a lower signal strength?

So, what kind of fan would fit the case in your opinion? I mean, from my point of view a blower is the only one that can fit there...

Here's a iFixit article with pics and all:

I like how modular the Switch is. Should be pretty easy to fix.

I'm impressed with how small and shallow those analogue stick are. They barely take up any space by comparison to a regular stick (or even the 3DS's circle pad). I'd love to see how they're constructed on the inside of the unit.

The video clearly shows that the dock does have something in it...

The practical benefit is that in a few years USB-C stuff will be ubiquitous and cheap. The entire tech market is going to be pushing USB-C prices down for more than Nintendo could ever cost reduce a proprietary solution.

Ok, I'll explain. I was expecting the dock to have something that could aid the tablet in some way as it spits the image to the tv. I haven't kept up on the system, and I'm sure it was already said that the dock wouldn't make the games run better(?), but after seeing the insides games could possibly run worse in dock mode when they are put on a HDTV.

Are games ran at a higher resolution than 720p screen of the tablet in dock mode?
