People actually thought that? She's introduced by snatching out and eating her son's soul, of course she beats at least one of her other children.

People tried to rationalize her throughout this arc, saying they could see Big Mom working with Luffy, or that at the very least she isn't so bad so long as she isn't in one of her food-crazed moods.

Meanwhile I still remember her being introduced by eating someone. (Though maybe it was food) Or the fact that she extorts countries for candy and sweets, even going so far as to murder for it.

It was most likely homies made of sweets now.

While I still doubt that Carrot joins the SHs there are now many set ups for what could be her dream. She could want to see all races over the worlds and maybe paint them? Who knows.

And the argument that she is not useful doesn't really count imo, lots of crews have just fighters, Zoro is also 'only' a fighter.

Bartolomeo cut off a guy's tongue for shit talking Luffy and has faced 0 repercussion for this. Plus he allied himself with various assholes in the past, like Croc and Buggy. And now he's going to ally himself with Bege, whose entire backstory is basically "unrepentant sadistic sociopathic asshole".

Glad why BM is so angry at Lola has been explained, basically Lola ruined BM plans out from under her.

Though it doesn't explain why Lola thought her doing that and leaving and her mother loves/cares for her...

I didn't say it was impossible for them to team up or something. As I said, my frustration was primarily directed at the idea being floated around that Big Mom not being that bad of a person.

Instead of it being "She's horrible, but I could still see her working with Luffy", it was more like "She could work with Luffy, she's not that bad tbh"

Amazing chapter

So fucking good.

I'm liking how unfazed and nonchalant Bege is this chapter. Even if he isn't personally strong he's definitely a scary person.

I'm glad we got context to Big Mom's relationship with the giants. Someone mentioned earlier that they might come into play to defeat Big Mom. Perhaps Big Mom will show up during the eventual Elbaf arc and be the main antagonist there.

There's definitely more to Carrot's character than we've seen too. Way too many subtle hints about stuff.

Well at least with the editor comment it looks like it will either start with the wedding and we just slowly learn about the plan as it goes down or the chapter describes the plan and the ending is the start of the wedding.

Though editor comments are terrible/hard to relied on.

Eh, fair enough. I don't particularly remember how many people tried to flat out excuse BM except for one person (forget who) that tried to claim that the strawhats actually did more harm to BM than BM did to them and has been rather forgiving to them (which might actually still be true, even only because BM's malice hasn't been focused on the strawhats).

I still maintain that all I want is a big, no holds bar villain fight at the end of the arc. After that, I don't really care what happens.

Oh, where to begin with this chapter?

- THE TOOTH IS BACK! And it's all thanks to milk. Lol. Milk is the cure-all for bone injuries. And the hench-goons comment about their bodies just added to the moment.

- Lola was supposed to marry a giant. But not just any giant, it's FREAKING LOKI! Elbaf arc will be the arc where God Usopp dethrones Odin.

- Big Mom beating Chiffon black and blue in Lola's absence. That's a completely cruel thing to do to your own daughter. Not necessarily evil, but definitely reinforces that Big Mom isn't a kind person at heart.

- The crew is MAFIA CLOTHES. This is amazing.

- Gangster Gastino! GASTINO FOR NAKAMA! Forget that Caesar-whats-his-name-guy!

The crew doesn't need an artist, plus Usopp can already draw.
It fits better the last chapter, but i still want to mention it.
Many people always believed, that Jinbei role in the crew will be the position as a helmsman. But looking at the last chapters and his history, its clear to me that he will become the Strawhat's diplomate. Not only is he very good in talking to powerful people. Hiding his funny bones behind a serious face. He knows a lot about the power structures in the world and has connections. I even see his dream to be a very diplomatic one: Bring the fishman race on eye level with any other race on the planet.

Considering Lola seemingly asked every single man she met to marry her instantly and had been rejected hundred of times, I wonder what her problem with Loki was.

It doesn't sound like this was an arranged marriage like Big Mom had been setting up.

Oh, was that her? I thought that was the dude from the long leg tribe and I couldn't find Robin.

They also didnt need a musician but here we are.

In Chapter 2, Luffy thought about getting a musician along with other crew rank.
In Chapter 7, Zoro and Luffy decided to find a navigator, Luffy burled out "and a musician, a cook, a...." With Zoro yelling "That can wait!"
At the beginning of the Baratie Arc, Luffy announced that they would find a cook and then a musician which puzzled the crew.
At the end of the Arlong Park Arc, Luffy thought of getting a doctor and a musician, in which Zoro became puzzled.
At the beginning of the Long Ring Long Land Arc, Luffy announced that they will find a shipwright and a musician, which had his crew telling him to let it go.

Luffy mention he wanted a musician though out the series.

Also we need someone to sing pirate songs.

I remember people thinking of the musician joining just as a running gag that would never happen.

Good times.

I love Carrot but Luffy doesn't react to her like he does with most other potential crew members. She's ahead of most though in that he knows her name.

I still think she could join but now that I think about it she and Luffy have barely spoke to each other this entire arc.

One of the reasons I think it's unlikely Carrot will join is I find it impossible to imagine her having a tragic backstory

Her tragic backstory is that she had to wait until the last half of the manga to join.

If word got around that the prince of Elbaf was a horsefucker, then their reputation in the Grand Line would be tarnish. :p

Alternatively, Loki tried to make her laugh like he did Skadi and Lola was just wierded out.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman said:
Thor nudged Loki. ”Go on," he said. ”Make her laugh. This is all your fault anyway."

Loki sighed. ”Really?"

Thor nodded, and he tapped the handle of his hammer meaningfully.

Loki shook his head. Then he went outside, to pens where the animals were kept, and he came back into the wedding feast leading a large, extremely irritated billy goat. Loki irritated the goat even more by tying a strong rope tightly around its beard.

Then Loki tied the other end of the rope around his own private parts.

He tugged on the rope with his hand. The goat screamed, feeling its beard tugged painfully, and it jerked back. The rope pulled hard on Loki's private parts. Loki screamed and grabbed for the rope again, yanking it back.

The gods laughed. It did not take a lot to make the gods laugh, but this was the best thing they had seen in a long time. They placed bets on what would be torn off first, the goat's beard or Loki's private parts. They mocked Loki for screaming. ”Like a fox wailing in the nighttime!" exclaimed Balder, stifling his laughter. ”Loki sounds like a weeping baby!" giggled Balder's brother Hod, who was blind but still laughed every time Loki screeched.

Skadi did not laugh, although the ghost of a smile began to haunt the corners of her lips. Every time the goat screamed or Loki wailed like a child in pain, her smile became a little wider.

Loki pulled. The goat pulled. Loki screamed and yanked the rope. The goat yelped and pulled back even harder.

The rope snapped.

Loki shot through the air, clutching at his groin, and landed smack in Skadi's lap, whimpering and broken.

This chapter was amazing. We got...

1) More Carrot goodness: I hope she is fleshed out further (no pun intended) so she can become permanent crew member. See can be the wide-eyed, adventure-seaking, young "cabin boy" of the ship (well, "cabin-girl" in this case).

2) Elbaf Teasing: Learning who the leader of Elbaf is and what happened with Lola. Great stuff and you just know Oda is dropping this info for the eventual Elbaf Arc where Usopp will be the main focus. Like Imperial Bishop said, Loki being the "god of lies" just makes it a perfect fit for God Usopp.

3) The Milk Gag: Hahaha! Such a great gag. I can't help but think there might be more to Milk affecting Brook/Luffy than just it being a joke but it's probably just a joke.

4) Gangster Gastino: While I'm not the biggest fan of Ceaser, this was a great reveal and I just love how Oda keeps his readers guessing by teasing him last chapter in such a vague way and having Luffy just blurt out, "Hey! It's You!" like a surrogate for the audience.

That's probably the hurdle we need her to clear at this point, what role would she serve? Jinbe could be the scout or something, given his advantage below water.

Yeah he's more than just a helmsmen, he basically going to be the go to guy for water stuff since now they have an advantage with that.

This is kinda what I was talking about a few pages back. There is a clear separation between the decision making done by Oda for why the crew members are there and the decision making done by Luffy.

As far as Luffy is concerned, why the hell does she need any kind of role to begin with? Luffy never takes people on because he needs roles fulfilled. Even when he does, he just finds someone he likes and decides to take them on and they just happen to also fulfill that role. He saw Usopp, liked him, decided he was a crewmember and figured out he was a sniper after the fact. I'm pretty sure it was like that with Chopper too. And Luffy couldn't give two shits about Jinbei's helmsmanship or diplomatic ability, he wants him on his ship because he just likes him. At best, this only happened occasionally. He wanted a cook and musician and said so beforehand, then took on the first cook and musician he saw that he liked. But more often than not, even when a necessary role is established, he often just seems to take on whoever he likes and they just happen to fulfill a role on the ship. For me, it's extremely immersion breaking and distracting to even consider this question from this perspective rather than asking why Luffy would want Carrot on his crew.

Chopper is the doctor. Luffy is the captain. Carrot's role as a novice helps contrast and show just how much the core group has grown up as pirates.

I know you can't accept that Carrot is popular or crew potential but man, you're kinda reaching here.

I'm talking about Carrot personality mainly with my quote, she overlaps with Chopper and Luffy to much to be special.
Do the straw hats need that even...no.

Her roles people come up with are needed in the sightless and comes across as people just wanting her around.

Nor is she just like by Luffy to just join the crew like Usopp and Brook (though he has a bigger role).
Or even the joke characters like Gaimon and Kinmeon legs that talked though farts.

Does she need a specific role though? Neither jinbei nor zoro have one and that's not a problem. Everyone saying she doesn't fit in is just personally against it. That argument doesn't work.

Not saying she will join, just saying that the "what role will she fit" discussion is pointless with jinbei and zoro onboard.

Also, saying she overlaps with luffy and chopper is pointless too since chopper and luffy already overlap then, so that means overlapping personalities are nothing against becoming a member 😋

I would say Zoro is the main 2nd muscle/swordsman on the crew since most of the time he just trains and sleep on the ship.

It's true roles aren't fully needed (Usopp & Zoro) but there's must be something special they can bring (personalty, strengths, dreams, connection to Luffy, abilities etc).

Carrot qualities people bring up have been cover by other straw hats.

Does she need a specific role though?

No, not really. At least, Luffy as a character doesn't always ask or accept someone to join on the basis of them having a specific role within the crew. (Zoro, Usopp, Robin technically) I do wonder though, what are some common roles within the crew that they really could use? I've heard helmsman be thrown around... Eh, I guess. Scout's another one, which Carrot could fulfill due to her high jumping ability. But once again... eh. Is there anything else that's of similar importance to the roles already filled by the current members of the crew?

Also it's been over 9 years since Brook joined, so I wouldn't necessarily be surprised if Oda messes at least a little with the whole criteria we've gotten used to. But admittedly that's just reaching at that point. At any rate, it's a long ass manga, so as usual, let's see what Oda does with her.

Everyone saying she doesn't fit in is just personally against it. That argument doesn't work.

This is also true, as hearing stuff like her personality being covered by other Straw Hats isn't remotely convincing to me. But they admittedly have the advantage since Carrot has yet to blatantly display the general criteria we're used to potential crew members having. So the wait continues...

Oda actually had a pretty clear plan for the crew going way, way back, so this assertion is actually false. The first nine, at least, were planned for a long time.

Here you can see everyone but Robin in some form. She was a tiny little pixie-dude with a hammer instead.
