Early impressions from RPS for ME:A. It's... not good

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
but shinobi said...
Shinobi seems to love all things Bioware, including Inquisition. I liked it too, but I know there were some real issues with it.

Yeah, but do you really trust those sites for something as huge as this title?

Weird that Gaf is obsessed with creating preview threads based off of one negative impression.
I mean there is a impressions thread right now where this can be lumped in.

Anyway, mods can see to that.

OT, I think my main gripe is the off dialogue, it doesn't feel right and a bit saturday morning cartoonish.
Still, looking forward to playing this in a month or so, my plate is just too full.

Sounds like they really didn't like it, what a bummer. I can't wait to see everyone else's thoughts on the game and play it for myself. A 4th game, made after a successful trilogy can't be easy to make so it should be interesting to see how this ends up.

There's another preview from RPG that's glowing.

This /one/ guy didn't like it, and he has a history of not liking good games.

The author thinks The Witcher 3 plays like eating cardboard, praises No Man's Sky and think Inside is tedious and bland. So no you can keep your opinion.

So you make a pointless thread then you post this shit?

Come on man...

Looks like one preview from a well known forum personality that is a deeply passionate mass effect fan

Anyways, hope it's good. But I'm hovering over that button

Erm, I think you need to actually read the thread that was linked..

Yeah, and Breath of the Wild received a crazy amount of 10s. Smetimes you need to look past the hype.
And pretty much everybody who played it greatly enjoys it as evidenced by positive user feedback as well as critical feedback.

Some of GAF won't be satisfied until everything that people enjoy is shit all over because it's not what they like.

Did you even click on the thread? It has previews from every major site.

Da fuq?
Am I on Gamefaq's?

I expect this from some young junior account not a full member, come on now.
Edit: jesus it's you OP. And you made the thread?

Seems your eager for this game to suck.

This bit made me laugh though.

I do wonder if that's intentional though. It would be neat, subtle bit of characterisation to show she's not as smart as she thinks she is.

But it's probably not. As he correctly identifies elsewhere in the preview, characters in recent Bioware games tend to overtly tell you precisely what their personalities are.

You know. I gotta say DA:I is not a bad game. I was initially displeased as anyone when I first played it. The MMO/fetch quest stuff was and still is annoying, but the actual core game is amazing and the characters and the way their stories are presented are sublime. I think anyone that was put off by all the random mmo collecting stuff and gave up early should go back and give it another go. It might win you over.

Edit:

Weren't we expecting this after the last dragon age was kind of a turd?
I have no faith in mainstream gaming press after showering biowares last 2 games like this with praise only to play them and be utterly met with tepid mediocrity, so this preview seems to be a man after my own mind in terms of what bioware puts out. When it comes to bioware I don't care if it is sitting at a 99 on mc next week: the games press always gets caught up in hype frenzy, throws roses at bioware, then the community gets ahold of it and we all find out at best it's merely okay.

I'm don't really have an ounce of faith in them to deliver anymore, and despite the glowing previews from the press everything I've seen on this game is screaming more bioware mediocrity. Honestly it's kind of refreshing to have someone in the press feel the same way.

He lays out all of the reasoning behind his criticism of ME:A thus far. In detail. You can't just say "He has unreasonable opinions about other games!" as a way to dismiss them. Either engage the actual critiques, or don't.

Literally every other impression is positive.

Yes, and when every one is saying/doing the same thing make it a point to find the person going the other way and find out why.

I am always concerned when everyone is positive on something, it is very possible they are missing something so I like to hear any contrarian opinions, especially ones as well written and thought out as this.

Don't just assume that since "all the impressions are positive" that everything is okay, and definitely don't be dismissive of folks saying things to the contrary. Take the time to understand.

Maybe thats asking too much.

What I expect from BioWare is slightly dodgy combat, but splendid writing and characters.

What? Not me. I found KOTOR's protagonist responses were either irritatingly pious or ridiculous "hey! I'm a massive dick!" with a nice scattering of bland inbetween. There was a single redeeming companion character. The NPC interactions were a case of wading through tedious exposition where you have to pretend you are interested in whatever plight is facing them. Christ, I just went into PSone jRPG mode and skipped the voice acting to get through it. Just to clarify - I've happily sat through MGS2 & 4 with no complaints.

The same with Dragon Age: Origins. Possibly one decent team mate. Again wave after wave of tiresome NPC's where you're basically exhausting conversation options to see if there is a quest marker hidden away.

Even the first half of Mass Effect is a trial of endurance, only really stepping up the gears once you've ploughed through the Citadel (or chosen to bypass exploring it whatsoever).

If ME:A tops these games, then it is already doing ok for me.

I know I decide I'm not going to like "THING" before I even play it myself, so whenever someone does get to play it and agrees with my 'valid' assessment of the "THING" I haven't experienced yet, I need to show it to everyone.

Everybody is attacking op and RPS, but to me the article sounds like someone clearly articulating why a Mass Effect game kind of sucks. Endless exposition and middling combat? sure sounds like Mass Effect to me.

Humanity travels to a new galaxy for the first time, there’s so much hope, so much potential, but oh noes, everything’s horrid, and there’s a reptilian-looking alien race on a dusty sand planet that shoots you with ray guns on first sight. Really?! A different galaxy and the diversion from the norm is so slight that between the generic bone-headed (literally) lizards and their pew-pew antics are, er, floating rocks? (Seriously, the game thinks this innovation in portraying reality is so novel that every character feels the need to mention it.) Within seconds you’re apparently the Chosen One, a Pathfinder, which means someone who can look at a planet and say, “Yes, I think people might be able to live here.” Er?

Within minutes of starting there’s a cutscene in which a soldier type is shooting an already entirely dead corpse, and someone else has to say, “Hey, hey, take it easy,” and he fires off a few more shots and declares himself satisfied. I can’t even imagine how anyone can feel okay with writing that into a script without experiencing enough shame to just get up, walk away, and keep walking until they fall off of or into something.

Honestly, this sounds just fun. Its like some expect games to reach the levels of screen writing that movies and tv offers (which means you are dissatisfied 100% of the time, excluding TLOU). Its a Mass Effect scifi space shooter rpg. Its rght there below Star Trek Enterprise in terms of character development (and I liked that show). Even Bioware has never been that great at humane or drama in their stories, its more the setting and action.

He substantiates his opinions more than any of the other impressions I've read.

I'll see for myself with the trial though.

is John doing the full review, then?

That's disappointing. I was hoping it was Adam Smith, he did DA:I and I mostly agreed with his thoughts.

John is very hit and miss for me, these days.

The RPS piece is well written and thought out? It's basically one long nitpicking rant. There is no eloquence or nuance in that thing. It's terrible.

frankly you could tell something was way off with this. every single piece of promotional footage has been a janky, boring mess. i loved mass effect. 1 in particular but they were all great. but i'm struggling to get excited about this. it looks bad. i think i'll skip it for now and wait for persona 5.

I love Pokken!
FYI: This article is from the guy who thought ME3 ending was ''perfect'' and INSIDE was "empty and procedural"

i trust more that one negative that many positive when it comes to EA and bioware, sorry, been burned before there.

Yup, you have the industry figured out all right...
Negative reviews = honesty. Positive reviews = shilling

What a horribly negative point of view you have. Do you feel this way about other things in life or just for how people enjoy video games?

I can handle cheesy writing, but this gives me pause:

Oh, and in case that seems like a breeze of a system, it’ll merrily change which mission you’re pursuing without telling you! I was following this dumb murder mystery side quest, but because there was a main story plotline on the same planet it decided to switch its pursued quest to that one. It does this all the damned time. It’s beyond infuriating.

Side quests feel like something from a 2004 Korean MMO. Just complete nothingness, running from map icon to map icon, scanning objects with your scanner when told to, and then AI companion SAM letting you know that, yup, the source of the defects has been found/animal has been captured/toddler reunited with rabid tiger, despite your actually doing nothing relevant to the tissue-thin narrative.

I am just going to head in with tempered expectations and hope for the best. But I am still expecting to enjoy it for the most part.
