Nier: Automata PC performance thread

About the screen detection, i 'solved' it by going into Nvidia control panel, and disable display scaling + override scaling mode, and in your monitor hardware menu, chose 1:1 to also disable its scaling. Playing it in fullscreen + vysnc, so far so good at 2560*1440@60hz

No 16:10 support though, i get black bars no matter if i use 1440p or 1600p, so i chose 1440p on my 16:10 monitor.

I gave this a shot, no dice, it still forces me to 1920x1440 when I select 2560x1440, now I just get black bars around the image.

On the plus side those issues I was having earlier with the tanking framerate appears to have been mitigated. Could have been the above, or me disabling adaptive VSync in Nvidia Control panel.

Strange though, in the place it was having trouble before now I'm getting what seem to be black frames very briefly. No more than a couple of them, but noticeable, and only in that area for some reason.

900p prerendered 30fps cutscenes that take up most of the space of the game...my goodness

Haven't kept up with either version. If I have a 290x/4670k and a Pro should I just get it on PS4 then?

You should atleast be on par with Pro there, but don't take my word for it.

THis game seriously should not take as many resources as it does. Just based on how it looks on my base PS4, i kinda expect 1080p 60fps there, let alone on Pro or you guy's far more powerful PC builds

I mean it runs fine on base PS4 and looks decent enough, but the graphics arent pushing anything at all(seriously this looks the same as Bayonetta, MGSR and every other platinum game graphically from last gen) and the enemy count, while more than those other games, still dont count for the disparity...there's usually almost nothing going on in the same way the setpieces of bayo 1 and 2 or MGSR to even justify it really

Especially with Metal gear solid 5 at 1080p 60fps on base PS4 and looks far better

How do you know it is outputting 1920x1440 btw?
Try to use aspect ratio scaling instead of no scaling as the previous mentioned. Aspect ratio also worked for me.

Make sure you tick override scaling mode set by games and programs in the CP. And also go into your monitor menus and see where its option to display 1:1 is. Dont let your monitor scale.

By black borders, what do you mean? All sides?
My black bars are on the top and bottom since im on a 16:10 monitor.

Is it just me or does 1080p fullscreen looks blurry compared to 1080p windowed?

Also if I use windowed, performance is worse so I gotta play with blur :/

970 and i5 4690k, framerate is mostly solid 60 with some drops here and here but the blur really annoys me ( yes I turned it off in the settings :( )

cutscenes are so bad. but other than that games looks and feels great

theres a weird issue where it stretches 1080 to 1440 for me. maybe its doing something like that for you too? anyways i just used borderless gaming and i was good. try that maybe?

ReShade injection made the difference...although my TitanXP barely keeps it at 30 fps @ 4K with ReShade on...

And you can notice the map error AO has caused...

The game has a bug (I'm assuming) where it renders at 900p if you select fullscreen. In windowed mode, it renders at the resolution you specify.

Damn, the game is really taxing to run. Getting 1080p60 with High Shadows, Blur off, AO off, Effects low and 2x AA. Running smoothly though, so all good.

Wasn't planning on buying a new card, but this is making me consider it lol.

If I use windowed mode, the performance is worse :/ So I gotta balance it somehow :/ I tried borderless gaming but it doesn't help since the game then doesn't register controller buttons properly (it shows keyboard inputs instead of XBOX ONE inputs )

alright some more playing:

i5 3570k
GTX 1070
8GB of RAM

2560x1440, max settings besides 4x MSAA gives me 50-60fps which feels perfectly fine for me on GSYNC :)

I know it's 1920x1440 because that's what the windows display settings says that my monitor is at when I attempted to select 2560x1440 fullscreen.

I ticked override in the Nvidia settings. It keeps the monitor itself at 2560x1440 but the actual game is rendering at 1920x1440 with black bars on either side of the image. Which is an improvement over stretching the image like it was before at least.

Gonna just stick with Borderless windowed for now. It seems to do okay with that most of the time.

I don't get that weird map error w/ Rob's preset.. ::looks again:: ah. that's the grass showing through.. yeah, I do see that. at first glance it looked like gpu artifacting lol.

it does add AO to the 3d map in the main menu, though.. which can make it a bit harder to read.. so I just set up a toggle to turn off the effect if I'm having trouble w/ the map. not much of a hassle considering how much better it looks w/ reshade.

screen is constantly dropping to black for like 1-2 seconds for some reason, only really started from the android base on (after I alt-tabbed out of the game for the first time I guess?)... perhaps if I restart that'll stop happening...

What is your setup again? And how is your performance at what resolution?

What settings do you have in game?

- ASUS Z170-A motherboard
- i7 6700K (overclocked to 4.6GHz)
- ASUS Strix GTX 1080
- 64GB DDR4 RAM
- 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD

Running everything maxed out at 1440p except AO and AA are disabled in game. Instead I'm using Reshade's superior AO and AA shaders (MXAO/SMAA/FXAA). Rock solid 60fps @ 2560x1440 Fullscreen and/or Windowed @ 3440x1440 (using the Borderless Gaming utiltiy). BUT if I try running it Windowed @ 3440x1440 with Reshade enabled it causes the frame rate to dip. Currently my preference is 2560x1440 with Reshade enabled because I want a locked 60fps.

Crap. I have pretty much the same setup but I am playing on a 3440x1440 screen and fullscreen is bugged for me and makes the game look like poop in comparison to borderless gaming.

Really hope they fix this fullscreen bug or whatever it is. This is annoying.

how do you add that reshade to your game? any 'tutorial' or whatnot?

It's pretty simple. Just go to the Reshade web site and download it. Also check out the forums to familiarize yourself with it.

Basically:
- download Reshade 3.0.6
- double-click the setup utility (ReShade_Setup_3.0.6.exe)
- click 'Select game'
- select the games executable file (in this case NieRAutomata.exe)
- click the Direct3D 10+ button
- create a new text document called "Nier Reshade Prest.ini" (I know, I spelled preset wrong)
- copy and paste the text from the link I posted on pastebin into the document
- save it to your game directory (same folder as NieRAutomata.exe)
- start the game and you should be good to go (fingers crossed)
- Pressing Shift+F2 in game brings up the Reshade menu so you can tweak the settings to your own preference.

I was having the same problem earlier too. The resolution wasn't scaling properly and as a result it was rendering at a much lower resolution. It eventually got fixed somehow but I can't say for sure how.

i7 3770K, Titan X, 16GB, SSD.

Shadows on Medium, Blur off, everything else High at 1080p Windowed until they fix Fullscreen, 2xMSAA- 60fps locked without any significant drops. It lowers to 57 when entering new areas for a second or two but I'm happy. The colors are vibrant and it feels smoooooth.

Thank you for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. Just one more question, how big of an impact does using reshade have on game's performance? I'm using 970 and i5 4690k so I'm wondering if it'll tank my FPS too much and make it unstable 60.

So do I need to do some sort of ritual? Like a sacrifice or something? What animal did you use? Be honest.

16.11.5 saved the white screen issue for me. RX470.

Performance is a bit wonky, but who the fuck am I kidding. I accepted MUCH worse for Bayonetta, I'll accept it for now. And in the future when I get a non-shitty cpu and I upgrade gpu, it will run better.

I am glad.

On high and I'm getting 60 with no drops.

I'm not nearly as technical as other PC players, though. If the resolution is at least 720p and the frame-rate no less than 60, I'm solid.

I'll probably go 720p lol. That said, I'll only be able to check it out in like 7 hours (having 300 KB/s Internet after data cap is hell)

So yeah, whenever I use Borderless Gaming to play on my 180p TV screen (Display 2) I crash after like 30 minutes. Well, it just freezes on a frame but you can still hear stuff going on behind it, like menus and footsteps and attacks.

Here's something to laugh at for you power PC players. Old GTX750ti, 8gb, i5-4460 results in:
~40 fps 1600x900 low settings
~20 fps 1920x1080 with everything turned on and up

Actually surprised it runs at all, the base setting is adequate if you have no other option. I have it on PS4 already. What I can't do on PS4 is turn it all up (framerate be damned) and get extra clean, nicely anti-aliased stills of 2...I mean, of the action and the environments.

I went in expecting this at best, just supporting Nier Day 1 and if whim dictates a powerful new card, it'll be there. Playing it now still on PC.

Add: fwiw, not one crash over several hours
My system isn't far off this. How do these settings compare to the base PS4 version? It's sounding like I should just go with the console version.

i5 4590 + GTX 1070 here. I'm running the game at 1440p using Borderless Windowed Gaming. AA is completely off, as is motion blur, but everything else is set to high/on.

It manages 60 fps most of the time, but the game loves to dip to 59.8, 59.3, 58.2 fps according to FPS. The game does not feel as smooth as the other 60 fps titles I've played today.

Regular PS4 is easy to recommend, apparently also 900p but manages generally high and solid framerate at a reasonable cost of aliasing (I only really noticed in some jaggy screenshots). Thoroughly enjoy playing it there.

Apparently (according to the Steam Forums) the issue I'm having (freezing the frame but still having the game go on behind it) is related to the GTX780 and 780Ti.

I'm on 970 and I'm still experiencing the same problem so I doubt it's only related to those cards.

Reposting this in hopes that someone might have an idea of what's going on with my game. I've verified the game files, though I haven't reinstalled yet. (Reinstalling now).

Having a problem and need some help, bros

After the opening/tutorial mission, the white screen fades to 2B looking out one of the space station windows and she goes to meet 9S.

After the cut-scene about the history of events, things seem to be broken. I go see the Commander and she says this to me:

I have not held any conversation with her prior, nor have I been in the room since "reboot". I've looked at some Youtube videos and there is supposed to be a crowd of these android people to the right off the elevator and a marker over the Commander. I see none of that, as pictured here:

When I go to look at the Intel station in 2B's (or anyone's) room, I see this, which looks glitched.

Even scanning through the menu I can hear 2B doing attacks as if the game isn't recognizing that I'm in the menu system. Sometimes I'm unable to close the menu at all and am forced to reboot.

The Quests are all greyed out, as shown here:

When I go to the Hangar, nothing happens on any pads (where it looks like something is supposed to happen). It looks like this:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've restarted the game from the beginning and been wandering around the station trying to figure out if I've done something wrong for more than an hour.

Please help.

I think you just ran into a shitty scripting bug, fam.

From the end of the boss, 2B is on the Bunker as you said. You talk to 9S and thank him for helping you. Then it cuts to some background story stuff and you do a settings tutorial (adjust brightness and stuff). After, you get up and you should have an objective marker pointing you towards the commander and then pointing you to the hanger afterwards. There should definitely be people up in that room with the commander and those intel stations in all the other rooms should be shops.

You say you've gone though the prologue twice now and still have this issue? Have you tried verifying game files?

I'll try verifying the game files. What is happening for me is:

1.) tutorial area ends

2.) 2B is peering out the window, then goes to thank 9S

3.) get speech about aliens taking us out and mankind fighting back blah blah glory to the human race.

4.) I get the option to use online something or other for messages; I choose Yes.

5.) Immediately after history cut-scene ends and I get that online messages option, 2B is again back in the hallway and 9S comes out of a room nearby.

6.) I get no Commander marker and her room is actually grey. If I go to the Commander to speak with her, she asks why I'm still here and tells me that the mission data or whatever should be available to me.

7.) I go to the Hangar and nothing happens on the ship platform or anywhere else in the game world for that matter.

Notes:

- If I try to click on the Settings from inside the game (rather than from the menu), it just kicks me back to the game. Settings do not work.

- There are no active quests of any kind under the Quests menu.

Hard for me to believe I'm the only one experiencing this, but here we are.
