I'm having a hard time dying in Shadow of Mordor

And by that, I mean *not purposely* dying. From what I can tell, part of the effects of the nemesis system is dying which could promote captains or regular orks to captains. That said, I didn't like the idea of dying on purpose. I guess in large part, this is because I tend to avoid dying by going to get plants to heal myself once it seems like I get into too much trouble.

Now I'm getting to the other area in the game and hoping there's enemies that can do the job. I have had a close call about 3 times, but each of those times I still made the last-minute comeback prompt.

You did what I did and beat the goddamn pee out of everyone in the first area to the point where they ran out of mooks to feed to the Nemesis System

It's an EZ game, all about the combo stuff anyways

It's a ridiculously easy game that takes the Batman combat and dumbs it down. Maybe the sequel will make the Nemesis system worthwhile.

You get more abilities to influence the orcs.

The game basically turns into an orc management sim with light combat and story elements

The game is really easy without even accounting the extremely OP skills you get as you level up. Makes the whole nemesis system kind of pointless unless you actively try to get yourself killed.

Stealth brag thread for easy game? Stealth brag thread.

Mostly, I just got done playing for today, and I admit I'm kinda getting genuinely bummed at this point. Admittedly, the first part only had lvl 15 captains, so hopefully it can get harder for the second half?

It's not really stealth brag, it's really easy to be good at that game.

Eh still stealth brag. Games is easy as shit though, and by the end you will literally break it with the special moves.

It sucks the best features of the nemesis system are locked behind story missions, like possessing Orcs. Then the game really opens up.

Did you turn off the indicators for combat? I did that to try and up the difficulty, maybe main line the plot so you don't get over leveled?
Game was definitely too easy which sucks because it undermined the nemesis system

The game got so easy by the halfway point.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
You can actually make the game incredibly fucking hard as well. I basically created an orc nemesis that was immune to most every form of kill, immune to all manner of fear tactics and had the ability that meant they were always heading directly towards your characters no matter where you were on the mpa so they would be showing up damn near every time I was trying to do something in an area and stayed there too long. Seriously, the dude was basically invincible and would fuck up my stealth infiltration or other things all the time.

There's an inverted difficulty in this game because dying levels up the enemies and makes it harder. And if you never die, they don't get that much harder, so you have a higher chance of not dying. It's the opposite of what most games do.

To keep the game challenging and interesting, try suicide 5 times in a row every hour or so. And to start off suicide like 15 times in a row before doing anything else to give the Nemesis system a better base.

Yeah, it's silly.

I learned early on to limit myself to very few abilities unlocked to avoid being stupidly strong. I basically played it as a beat em up and turned off visual aids for countering.

I felt the same way, OP. I think I missed out a little on the Nemesis system because I played very cautiously and ran like hell if my health was low. I think I only died like twice to orc leaders

Just go up a tower and wait there like 50 times.

You shouldn't have to do that but the combat was too easy for its own good.

Still a fun game, but I hope its sequel fixes that.

All those Arkham combat games are hard to die in. I feel like I could count my deaths in Batman, Sleepy Dogs, and Mordor combined on my fingers.

RoboPlato

I'd be in the dick
As you get farther in you'll find the Uruks have added skills/abilities. I eventually found one that was practically set up to be a direct counter to my playstyle. I was able to go through most with relative ease but he was a tough bastard. Every time he showed up it was a big showdown.

I did this as well. He was a huge pain in the ass until I finally managed to take him down. At first I thought it was funny I was smacking him down whenever he popped up but I definitely regretted it later.

You can send death threats to nemesis to raise their level instead of dying by their hands.

Also, try fighting three or more nemesis at the same time for higher chance of you dying and them all leveling up lol.

At least we know where the "nemesis" part of "nemesis system"came from

By the time I finished this game, I started to kinda feel bad for the Orcs; like I was just slaughtering a bunch of dumb animals who pose almost no threat.

I mean, Christ, they're surrounded by explosives, beehives, their flammable favorite drink, battle cats, etc... These poor bastards can't catch a break. And even when you are facing a few dozen at a time, only one or two, maybe three attack you at once, while the others just look on like dopes.

Still, one of my guilty pleasure comfort games of 2015.

I also made the mistake of making the game incredibly difficult! Which ruined it for me, even though it was probably my own fault. While still learning how to play it I stumbled across an orc in a cave and died maybe 10-15 times to him until I decided, "maybe just leave this guy alone".

Game was a lot harder afterwards. Not impossible, but it is a game where the game gets harder the worse you are it.

I ultimately found the Nemesis system more annoying than anything. Punished for every death, interrupted in the middle of my quest by cocky NPCS, bored by promotion scenes that meant nothing to the overall story.

It was an interesting idea, but I would be wary of playing any game with a Nemesis System because I am not that great at such games. But I do respect that they tried something new.

I tells you the flaw and bad design of the game when its main component and so called "selling feature" couldn't even worked properly without extreme self imposed challenge on the player. What a farce, either as a game and as a Tolkien-based story.

Man. This is what I ran into when reviewing it and folks lost their shit. But the same thing happened to me.

My biggest complaint with the game. It's cool that you're a bad ass ranger who can quickly assassinate everything quickly until a mob leader shows up and even then doesn't put up a fight.

It's like if SSJ2 Gohan just transformed and all the saibamens are like just in his way until it's just Cell. Repeat 50x.

With that said, I look forward to the next game because it seems to involve the army and not just the leaders so that it's possible you can struggle to even reach the boss.

Either i suck or i was incredibly unlucky. More than once i got myself killed early on when dealing with an orc captain immune to quick kills when one of his buddies showed up and killed me. Ended up creating a few orcs immune to everything.

Yeah, that's SoM. It's not really designed for the Nemesis System that it champions.

Nemeses get stronger as they kill the player, which can lead to some of them snowballing into serious threats. They will then ambush and harass the player, hampering their progress. But several hours in, players will gain tools and experience that lets them deal with everything the game throws at them--and I do mean everything--which negates the challenge of the game entirely. So it's a giant, elaborate system that serves no one but the back of the box.

And if you move on to the second map and do it again, this time desperately hoping for something new... well, having completed SoM, I'm still here hoping.

It had a pretty silly difficulty curve.

I remember the captains posed a bit of a challenge at the start for me, just because a good number of captains hung around the place I needed to be for the story.

After the start though, the Captains became less and less of a challenge until finally they were just a non-factor by the half way-two thirds point. I just didn't die enough for them to get stronger, not to mention I was going around killing them too so they never really grew naturally either.

Honestly to me it seemed a bit of a flawed system really, dying shouldn't cause the game to be harder, it should be the other way around...

See this is happening to me as well. I just started it and I'm having trouble dying....not that it's bad anyways..but the idea that they don't actually kill me is what I'm just puzzled at. They just say some shit like "it would be too soon to kill you here" and walk off. Then I'm stuck with trying to figure out wtf just happened..I find them and then kill them. The board has only 5 captains left and they aren't even high in power to really take them out so I feel like I'm stuck. I haven't even levels up anything besides health....so I'm not sure what to do now :(

Only time I would die is when you stumble upon 3 captains and one can throw poison spears. Of course sometimes the game will make an orc who is just immune to everything… they are not hard just time consuming.

If you're good at stealth games, it makes it even easier because you can generally pick off most generals pretty easy... But yeah, by mid point the game leans so far into easy land it can get a bit frustrating.

Play a bit recklessly and don't upgrade your HP. The game essentially rewards dying so there's no reason not to be super aggressive and just try things. Also, you can help the captains grow by killing their enemies and assisting them when they are having the various activities.

What was more bull shit is I did eventually kill him and was like,"FUCK YEAH!" except he showed up later on in the game and somehow had survived me chopping off his fucking head!

Yep. those poison spears were the only killers. especially if they had the "No Chance" ability where you can't survive the execution qte

I beat Shadow of Mordor on the most challenging difficulty without dying a single time. This is not meant as a stealth brag, i'm just hoping that Shadow of War offers a significant difficulty bump.

To be honest, I wish I had someone like that.

Spoilers for the endgame

The whole point of that final guy showing up is for you to be, "Oh it's that fucking guy, I HATE THAT FUCKING GUY!" but I never had a rival like that, instead I got "Oh, hey yeah I guess I killed you twice, you must be pretty mad"

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
yeah game is super ubisofty in that regard. the only times I died were when I stepped away from the pc and forgot to pause because fuck me, game gets boring as arse after 15 hours or so

I think I'll really take up the advice for turning off the prompts hitting a new area, so kinda a fresh start. I've been doing the death threat for a while, but still haven't died quite yet.

Out of the times it got close, it was because:

1) My first encounter with poison or bleeding.
2) Got suddenly shot a lot by arrows and spears (where I learned you get a last chance with projectiles)

Out of all the orcs, I guess the two strongest were

1) An orc near the beginning who I could only hurt through arrows and had to run around the area.
2) An orc called Olgard the Gutless I killed a couple of times who was basically invincible to any direct attack. On the other hand, he was afraid of nearly everything. Ended up killing him with a caragor last time and haven't seen him since. After this, I shortly learned you can just grab enemies that are terrified.

It's a fun game but it's stupid easy and I'm still caught off guard whenever I remember it won a few GotY awards.

Out of the 17 PS4 games I own this is the only one that I could not finish. Not because of difficulty, but out of sheer boredom. I was so ready for the game to end when I thought I had cleared the world map completely, and then they give me a whole other map to do the same shit in.
