Anyone else dislikes Nintendo's current love for washed out color schemes?

I don't agree that the colors in Mario look washed-out at all. Zelda kinda does. But what really bothers me in Zelda is the bloom. It's uncomfortable to look at.

ARMS is better but could still use some work, Splatoon is okey, BotW and Odyssey however do suffer from predominantly washed out color schemes IMHO.

The reason I wrote that is because you brought up third party games as if people were using some of those as examples for Nintendo using proper colour saturation, when literally the first person to mention anything not made by Nintendo was you.

Also, Odyssey most certainly does not, in any way shape or form, have a washed out colour scheme. Its blacks just aren't crushed to heck.

I think this practice really kills the art direction at times. It also hurts game play at times. When you're doing the trials in the
Lost Woods
in BotW, for example, the bad IQ and the washed-out colors make it really difficult to follow what's going on in the distance.

*Posts thread with terrible evidence*

*Complains that people calling it out are mean*
Where did i say *they* were mean?
Lol

Nice edit btw.
Nice edit?, then post what i originally did because i don't remember. I'll still stand by whatever it is i said.
Nintendo is behind in tech. They are discovering what other studios tried last generation, things like bloom, shaders etc.
This i can see.
Please tell us how you really feel OP?
What about it?, i stand by all of that.
There's your problem. Post pictures that you took in-game, THEN you get a decent discussion that won't get derailed like this.
I don't see how that would assist me in getting my point accross?, i did the same for all my examples. Used Google images for ALL of them.

Lol

after playing zelda in person... the 'washed out'-ness is a non issue. It's just some atmospheric fog type shit, there are tons of situations where it's not apparent, and to me it adds another level of contrast when you have both that and the crisp bold colorings, which it does both. otherwise you just get something a bit less dynamic

you post the images as if their entire games look as such

The "haze" you guys are complaining about is the gray portion of the grayscale. When you up saturation/blue levels/black levels you get rid of the "haze" because you are turning the gray into black.

The good news is that if you have bad taste and prefer your games to look like shit, Nintendo doesn't have to do it for you. Just set the color on your TV to native instead of auto or its equivalent, set the temp to normal/cool, and ramp up dynamic contrast. Boom. Ya got that pop brah.

They could have made this game look a lot better with a little less chemical smog everywhere (and this was just me, totally not a game visual design professional, toying with contrast for like 1 minute per pic)

Just change contrast and colors on your TV? It actually looks like that on mine.

Night time is pretty nice looking.

Nightime does look much better.

Also i'm happy to see that i am not completely crazy because others are also seeing the same/similar thing.

And i am sorry if i can't respond to every single post, don't ever think that i am dismissing anything on purpose.

Not seeing any issues with any of the pics posted excluding low quality youtube caps. The game has weather and atmospheric effects which affect visibility and exploration which is a huge part of the game. Funny that people think the game is broken in some way because twilight looks hazy, or inclement weather impairs visibility.

I dunno I'm playing on Wii U and the colors does feel less vibrant than my other Wii U games (I played pretty much all the Wii U heavy hitters except wonderful 101). My understanding is that the Wii U only does limited RGB, so that probably doesn't help.

Mario looks fine, but Zelda is definitely on the hazy/foggy side. On the bright side, seeing as the game can be emulated, people will be able to mess around with ReShade or possibly disable the fog altogether.

That way you would know what you're talking about. Literally anyone could google ugly screenshots. Now, there are a couple of people disputing that this is due to weather effects. What can you respond now that you haven't actually played the game to see for yourself? Nothing, you can just quote posts while actually answering nothing.

Why?, there are other games on the same system that have better contrast so why should i adjust it on a case by case basis?, also... why the hostility?
As i said, BotW i can kind of see, but the others? No way. Not at all. Those "corrected" images of Odyssey look terrible.
Sorry, i am not a professional when it comes to editing pictures but i said as much when i posted my "corrected" pics, they were done quickly and not by a pro.

Wait... you're telling me that i need to play a game before i can have an opinion on how it looks?, i have watched dozens of YT videos, streams, reviews you name it. So excuse me but i have a very good grasp on how it looks, night time does look better but could still use work. Also... another hostile reply, funny.

I think it's pretty telling with your use of the word "contrast" here.

Pretty much this.

I cannot see how any rational person who has played the game extensively believes what the OP is saying.

There's nothing wrong with having accurate grey scale. There's nothing to correct. Objects up close pop, objects off in the distance desaturate due to aerial perspective. Fog, haze, rain, dusk, etc effect the colors around you. As do large shadows. It's all fairly realistic in that regard.

Yeah, I posted that earlier.

BOTW has a muted look. The advantage of it is that the neon colors really pop. I can understand where you're coming from with Odyssey, though I need to see more of it before I make any real judgement. I think it looks fine in the city for example so maybe it's just that way for the really sunny areas idk. Other than that I don't understand. Splatoon, arms and Mk all are bright. I expect most of their games to be the same.

Am I in bizarro land? I feel like Nintendo is typically mocked for having too "colorful kiddy" looking games and now folks are complaining that colors aren't as bright as they should be?

That muted tone is super important as well.

It really makes shrines, guardians, etc stand out as special and important.

Every time it's foggy or raining or early morning or snowy or most of the weather that isn't afternoon and sunny breath of the wild looks so washed out.

It's beautiful for those 5 or 6 in game hours and looks great at all other times but man I wish it looked that good the entire time I was playing

Yes, rain and fog tends to wash everything out. See: real life.

Idk. I think BotW looked pretty nice and never even had the haze problem I see in some pictures.

Mario Oddyssey looks pretty bright to me. As do Arms and Splatoon.

They also don't look much like BotW to me.

Man, I've never seen people search so hard to find something wrong with Nintendo related things since the Switch release. Nintendo has the most colorful games on the market.. wtf is op talking about?
