Is Horizon ZD the only game this gen that delivered on its early trailers promise

No but its definitely a notable example of a game meeting/exceeding all pre-release gameplay/trailers/info.

I remember Until Dawn exceeding everything I saw pre-release, as recent example thats not Horizon.

Honestly most of Sony's output delivers on their early showings in terms of visuals

Driveclub, Infamous Second Son, The Order 1886, Bloodborne, and framerate aside, Uncharted 4 all basically looked as good or better than their prerelease footage.

Aye. And of those I think The Order is the only one that disappointed in a large way gameplay wise. Shame, too.

I guess Horizon was pretty damn far along by the time they put that first trailer out. Like, looking at the project timeline, I have to imagine the bulk of the visuals and systems were done by 2015, and they spent the last couple of years fleshing the world out with quests and content.

Ryse got an visual upgrade since its first showing.

Killzone Shadowfall met the first showing as well.

Can't remember of anything else right now.

Bloodborne was heavily downgraded from the alpha.

The only game that makes me feel post purchase regret is Mass Effect A (for...Not being as Awesome as I would have anticipated).

Horizon and several other games delivered well above what I expected.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild too.

Sorry to be that guy.
Both exceptional games

I'm gonna argue this one a bit.

The 2011 video is strictly a tech demo for the Wii U hardware. In no way was it representative for a Zelda game in development. [See: Spaceworld 2000 video reel]

The 2014 video is more a "This is the style of game we're going with" rather than a proper gameplay trailer. [See: Most E3 trailers shown by Sony & Microsoft] The final product looks the same but you don't see that sort of interactivity with the guardians.

From then on I'd say every footage we saw of the game was pretty representative of the final product.

Edit: Wait, we're strictly talking visuals? I thought this thread was about a release build of a game living up to early gameplay videos (hence "living up to early trailers promise") . Scratch my post then.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

BotW does not look like that 2014 reveal trailer. It is close but it didn't reach what is shown in that trailer.

Ahh you edited. Still living up to early trailers also pertains to graphics.

If true, it will be the first time from Sony. Will compare it later, the scenes are also ingame? . Btw nintendo never showed ingame gameplay botw that was fake.

Unless I'm completely misremembering the reveal, Dishonored 2 fits this description.

Well dishonered 2 bar was really low and the game still runs like shit. Horizon and Killzone shadowfall were both on par with the reveal. Infact the horizon reveal was much rougher.

Keep in mind when I say "this is what the game looks like" I'm talking about the general look of the world, Link's design, the design of enemies (the guardian), weapons, etc.

The trailer is a bit too dense on the vegetation and details and has way too far of a draw distance but otherwise I'd say its fairly representational of what the final game ended up looking like.

When the 2014 trailer was cut I would imagine the game wasn't anywhere near playable beyond conceptual demos, but they did have their art nailed down at that point. There wouldn't be a Borderlands-style shift in style between reveal and release, for instance.

Then what was that Shiggy video where they played the game? It was mostly off screen footage but they were playing the game.

Bloodborne. Dark Souls 3. Gravity Rush 2. Nier: Automata. Yakuza 0. Nioh. Resident Evil 7. And the list goes on and on. Plenty of games have.
Especially Japanese games.

Watching a Youtube vid of the Mass Effect Downgrade made me realise that Horizon is the only game that I can think of that looks as good if not better than its E3 trailers.

Are there any other games that have come close to their reveal trailers please link if so.

Metal gear solid v, on a technical level was exactly as advertised. Every metal gear game has been with the possible exception of 4, which was still pretty damn close.

Yeah MGS2 was mind blowing.
