Xbox first-party is "critical" for Scorpio, says Spencer (Gamesindustry.biz)

Remember when people had this guy as their avatar, or had "i believe/trust in Phil" akin to political slogans proudly printed on their avatars.
That was the best; as if the mouthpiece was running for office. Nonstop cringe for days ahahaha.

Hard times to be an Xbox fan. Hopefully they come out of E3 with some big surprises but I don't really see it happening. Shame they shuttered Lionhead and cancelled the Fable franchise because a new, return to form Fable game would be an amazing Scorpio launch title.

Right now there is only one game that interests me on the Xbox horizon and that's State of Decay 2. That's pretty crazy.

;)

Tbf hey are in a difficult possition...I think Phil is talking about 1party because after Sony's 1Q he has too, but probably 3party exclusives is the way to go. How big would be a Cyberpunk 2077 console exclusivity for example? That would sell tons of Scorpios

That would but I don't see anyone skipping the PS4 audience if they can avoid it. Frankly, people like to compare the Xbox One to the OG Xbox but the market has completely changed. The Xbox had numerous advantages to the PS2 when it came to porting PC games which can't be said of the Xbox One. All they have is first party and published games to lean on.

When it comes to those, people often choose to boil their line up down to Halo, Gears and Forza and ignore everything else. I can see why but I also feel like they have introduced a ton of new IP that people have largely ignored.

According to Microsoft, they have State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3 and Sea of Thieves slated for this year.

Forza Motorsport 7 is definitely coming. Halo 6 and Gears 5 are not.

Halo 3 Anniversary is a possibility, but I feel like they would gain a lot of brownie points if they released it as a free update for TMCC instead (alongside a PC version).
Yeah, they should update TMCC with Scorpio support, prerendered cutscenes for 1 & 3, and make Reach (+ Halo 1 anniversary multiplayer) DLC. I wouldn't mind if they even charged like $10-$15 for it. Or made it a brand new game for $30-40 if it also included Halo 5.

chubigans

y'all should be ashamed
A true Single Player AAA Fable game? A true Single Player AAA Fable game.

Open up your Scrooge McDuck Money Bin and get this party going, Phil. One game and you have a lot of our excitement. It could be just a logo. It could be a 2 minute teaser clip.

Stop fucking around. Present this and drop the mic.

They already shut down Lionhead. I doubt its happening.

Kingdom Hearts III still confirmed for Xbox One along with the next mainline Final Fantasy!

I hope he is telling truth about the rest. That has always been my criticism of the brand as first party should be a priority.
The next mainline FF isn't confirmed at all. SE is least likely to put Japanese games on Xbox. Probably get more games from lower tier publishers like tecmo.

I could see some Japanese games like Resident Evil 2 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 appearing on their E3. Nothing really niche but maybe something like on From's upcoming games as well.

Thanks for your concern I am sure myself and fellow Xbox only owners will somehow get through this difficult stage in our life, somehow.

Looking at the competing platforms the only games I would want on Switch would be Zelda and on the PS4 it would be Horizon. Thats pretty cazy.

Lol, is it fan-fiction time again? How much is MS going to pay to keep that game away from a 70-80m (or even higher) player base when this game releases? If CP 2077 releases in late 2019, we could already see PS5. No way.

Oh, and if that's the only way to make up for their short-commings, they can fo. That's the shitty side of competition.

Reminds me when members here thought Mass Effect would be exclusive to Xbox back in 2015.
The pie is too big.

Those massive kind of money hats at this stage of the gen are not practical for Sony or MS.

I'm confused. He says the team reworked Xbox Live and he wants the team to shift the same energy to first party development. But those would be two entirely different teams, unless things are much worse than we're aware of.

So either they had their game devs rebuild Xbox Live or he's blowing smoke again.

Now that Dragon Quest XI is confirmed to not have the awful archaic battle system of all the previous games, it seems like the perfect fit for Xbox One and Scorpio. Especially if they can get it running at 4K and 60FPS.

This post just feels like a slap in the face. I don't know why.

If you haven't liked DQ in the past, you think the little change in the battle system is going to change that? Or it being in 4k?

DQ is my favorite series of all time. Im just gonna stop here. :p

At this point, I'm really not at all inclined to trust anything their PR says about first party. They've been saying "the greatest lineup in Xbox history" for the past two years and it doesn't really mean anything when it's arguably weaker than the PS4's and even the Wii U's first party lineups. And I'm pretty sure that the OG Xbox and the 360 had much better lineups than the One by this point in their lives. I say this as somebody who owns all three of those consoles (and a Switch), the situation looks bleak for MS. They don't have much to set themselves apart from the competition, they are just kind of there. I hope to god that Sea of Thieves is good, but there's something that seems off about that game and I can't put my finger on what it is. MS don't seem to be giving it much of a spotlight either, again proving that they will only actively push their "AAA" IPs and not really take a chance on the new stuff. I think that is the main problem here, they are sleeping on projects that could have a lot of potential (for example, Sunset Overdrive).

Gamers in my age group grow increasingly jaded, and MS has the most to prove this E3. They also have the most room to impress. I think they will find a way to knock it out of the park, and they certainly have the history they can put to use and make "Gamer dreams come true" like Sony did at E3 2015 and 2016.

Plus, they've made waves with the Game Pass announcement. I hope they expand on that immensely. It has crazy potential and is leagues ahead of the competition and what they're trying to do.

Either way, I've learned to stop worrying.

I'll be there day one for the Scorpio, looking forward to see what games they have in the pipeline. They should have a distinctive advantage with third parties seeing as they'll have the most powerful console. It would be great to see a list of the games they will have running natively in 4k by launch.

Yeah, its funny. Just imagine how many MS-bashing-OT-graveyards Gaf would have if MS somehow manages to make CP 2077 a W10 store exclusive keeping the game off Steam, GOG,.... Screwing PS-crowd? That will damage their brand more than anything. This is not 2012. CDPR is a big player now.

Why can nintendo get away with releasing Mario, Pokémon and Zelda every year for the last 2 decades but Microsoft cant

Why not both?

Well they had Rare do those hideous Xbox Avatar things a few years ago!

No idea of the ratio but pulling a random figure from the air I bet they expect to sell 2m-3m Scorpios which would be around 1 Scoprio for every 10 "One"'s.

If you mean overall maybe, but Pro is selling close to 20% of the PS4's so I'm sure they'll at least want that. Probably targeting double that figure, and going for a 60-40 ratio

Xbox get an allocated budget to spend. Phil thought that the back end services and features of Live needed investment and new features, he allocated a certain pot of the money for those and now that they are up to speed with where they want to be they are going to focuis on first party?

Or it could all be bullshit and he is just telling lie after lie? Which do you
want to
believe?

Really? How much damage did Street Fighter 5 do for Sony's brand?

Resources. Just because it's different technicians working on things you still have to allocate project management, senior leadership, resource allocation, funding through finance etc. Big corporations aren't nimble no matter what jargon of the day they use to make you believe they are. They are working on approved timelines.

It would certainly cost less than buying a studio caplable of making an AAA game of that level or the Scalebound Fiasco ;)

Plus they already have a history of exclusivities with CDProjekt Red

I really hope they won't do it though, same way I hope Real doesnt buy Messi or Neymar, but that would be huge for them

That's... one way to look at things I guess. It's definitely the case that the "Xbox" team is just one big group of people who get shifted from project to project regardless of expertise. It definitely has nothing to do with needing the balance resources for the many aspects of their division. Nope.

I still like this guy, but actually don't know why. He is a master in talking stuff which sounds good, although the state of xbox these days is sad.

Reminds me of this:

Forget about what I expect. Here is what I want. This is mostly copy/pasted from another thread but I've edited the list slightly.

1) E3 starts with Scorpio reveal. Priced at $399. Designed to look like Xbox One S, but slightly bigger. Sleek, runs cool, with internal power supply, 6.5TF, Zen processor. November 2017 release date.

*Microsoft confirms that all Xbox One games will run on Scorpio, and any game that has dynamic resolution or dynamic frame rate will automatically receive modest bumps. I.E. if Witcher 3 dips from 30fps to 25fps occasionally on Xbox One, it will no longer do so on Scorpio. If Halo 5 dips from 1080p to 720p occasionally on Xbox One, it will no longer do so on Scorpio.

*Microsoft also announces that just like PS4 Pro, games can have Scorpio patches for vastly improved performance, which includes downsampled 1080p for owners of normal HDTVs, and 1440p/4K resolution for other games. Multiple options (such as 1440p/60fps and 4k/30fps) will be available, just like PS4 Pro.

*All 360 BC games will also be BC on Scorpio. And they will run better on Scorpio.

2) Atlus CEO comes on and says "We are pleased to announced we've been purchased by Microsoft".

*Persona 5 not cancelled for PS3 or PS4 (because Microsoft is such a good guy).
*Persona 5 port announced for Xbox One.
*Persona 4 Golden remastered announced for Xbox One.
*Atlus announces they are also working on a brand new JRPG IP (exclusive to Xbox).

3) Microsoft announces they have bought Thekla (Jonathon Blow studio) and Playdead (Inside and Limbo devs) to join 1st-party stable.

*The Witness and Inside are announced to have standalone disc releases.
*Thekla and Playdead are both working on new exclusive puzzle-game IPs for Xbox.
*Braid is announced as BC on 360, and Braid Remastered is available for download at E3 (at a cost of $4.99 for anyone who owns the 360 version) with a new 1000 gamerscore.

4) Microsoft announces the creation of a new JRPG 1st-party dev based in Osaka, called Microsoft Osaka Studios.

*The studio is comprised primarily of former devs that made Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey
*Their first game is an original JRPG IP.

5) Bonnie Ross from 343 comes on stage with the head of Rare.

*They announce that 343 Studios is working on Perfect Dark 3, developed 100% by 343 with some key Rare employees providing input
*343 announces that half their team is hard at work on Perfect Dark 3, with the other half spending significant resources to fix Master Chief Collection

6) Bonnie Ross stays on stage but the heads of Rare leave, replaced by the heads of Bioware

*They announce a Halo WRPG similar to Mass Effect 1. Developed by Bioware with input from key 343 members. You play exclusively as a female Spartan.
*The game will take place during the original Halo 1, 2, and 3 trilogy.
*You visit Halo rings, Earth, different human colonies, and various Covenant planets. No Prometheans.

7) Then Bonnie + Bioware guys leave, and Rare heads come back on stage with Playtonic Devs

*First, Rare shows off a new Sea of Thieves trailer, and they confirm the game is coming out September 2017. They confirm the game is not an MMO, not free-to-play, can be playable fully single player, and will have a massive campaign with dungeons and side quests, just like Wind Waker.

*They also show a Yooka-Laylee trailer (and at the end of the trailer it says coming out October 2017 on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch) because Microsoft is such a good guy and won't obfuscate the details of any third-party partnerships.

*After the Yooka-Laylee trailer, we hear a banjo tune and the familiar banjo guffaw. Then a Banjo Kazooie 3 trailer shows. Co-developed by Playtonic and Rare

8) Sam Lake from Remedy comes on stage with Phil Spencer. Microsoft announces they've purchased Remedy.

*Quantum Break story expansion DLC is announced. You play exclusively as Beth Wilder.
*$30. Can be purchased standalone. Has its own 1000 gamerscore. Can be launched within Quantum Break.
*They also announce Alan Wake 1 Remastered, with 2000 gamerscore. Has all DLC and American Nightmare.

9) The Coalition come on stage with Rod Fergusson

*Public apology from Rod Fergusson re: microtransactions in Gears 4. The cost of microtransactions is dramatically reduced.
*Confirmed that game has been changed so that the possibility of duplicate skins/characters is now ZERO.
*Currency drops for normal game play dramatically improved.
*New story DLC announced where you play as Kait and JD. Kait is the default player one character. Takes place shortly after the end of Gears 4. Titled "Kait's Epilogue". $20.

10) Microsoft announce they have purchased Twisted Pixel and they are working on Splosion Man 2.

11) Microsoft announces there will be no Forza in the year 2017. Instead, the Turn10 and Playground teams are hard at work on Scorpio patches for Forza Motorsport 5 and 6, and Forza Horizon 2, 3, and Fast/Furious.

12) Cuphead has a trailer and release date (July 2017). It wins game of the show. Platforming levels are dramatically improved. The Cuphead dev (Studio MDHR) announces they have been purchased by Microsoft and will join the company as a 1st-party developer.

13) Phil Fish comes on stage with Phil Spencer, and they announce the creation of a new 1st-party studio, headed by Phil Fish. Will have same name as Phil Fish's old dev: Polytron Corporation

*Fez announced BC on XB1, and a Fez Xbox One port is announced. Just like with Braid, it has 1000 gamerscore and can be purchased for a reduced price if you own the 360 game.
*Phil Fish announces he is working on a new puzzle game IP exclusive to Xbox One.

14) The Fullbright Company comes on stage and announces they have been purchased by Microsoft and will join the company as a 1st-party developer.

*They spend 2 minutes on stage talking about the success Gone Home has had
*They show a trailer for Tacoma and announce it will be available later that month, June 2017
*They also announce they are working on a new exclusive first-person puzzle game IP for Xbox One.

15) Insomniac comes on stage with Phil Spencer to announce Sunset Overdrive 2

*Projected release date of Holiday 2018
*Insomniac remains third-party developer and will retain ownership of Sunset Overdrive IP.
*Sunset Overdrive 2 will be console exclusive to Xbox One, play Anywhere with Xbox One and Windows 10, but will also have a Steam release on day one.

16) Chris Charla from ID@Xbox comes on stage and announces that a truckload of previously Sony-exclusive indie games will start getting Xbox One ports

*2-minute trailer shows various indie games that will be coming out soon.
*Then the developer of The Talos Principle comes on stage and says the Xbox One port is available right now to download and purchase.

17) The head of Xbox Japan comes on stage and reveals that Microsoft has created a new fund to finance ports of Japanese games to Xbox One

*They show a trailer that shows various big games like Kingdom Hearts remasters, Final Fantasy VII, Shenmue 3, Guilty Gear, and Tales of Xillia coming soon to Xbox One.
*The trailer very conspicuously omits games like Senran Kagura and Galgun because I really don't like those games and I don't want them included in this fantasy.

18) Finally, Shannon Loftis comes on stage to show off Crackdown 3, Minecraft and State of Decay 2

*She announces Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2 are both very close to completion and are coming out Holiday 2017
*She shows a trailer for both games.
*No mention of the cloud whatsoever for Crackdown 3. They confirm Crackdown 3 single player will be 100% playable offline.
*Minecraft 2 is announced, coming to all platforms: 360, PS3, Xbox One, Scorpio, PS4, PS4 Pro, Steam, Windows 10, Android, iOS, Switch.

19) Then, Phil Spencer says, "and one more thing". The auditorium goes dark. You hear a chainsaw and you see The Coalition's logo, and it says "The Coalition and Microsoft Studios present Shangheist". 2-minute trailer. The NY Times and Washington Post says "They did it!!! The sons of bitches actually did it!!!" on their front pages.

The list of first-party devs/games would then be:

343 Studios (working on Perfect Dark 3 and fixing Master Chief Collection)
Rare (working on Sea of Thieves and Banjo Kazooie 3)
Atlus (working on Persona 5, Persona 4 Remastered, and new JRPG IP)
Thekla (working on new puzzle game from Jonathan Blow)
Playdead (working on new puzzle game similar to Inside)
Microsoft Osaka Studios (working on new JRPG IP)
Remedy (working on Quantum Break DLC and Alan Wake Remastered)
The Coalition (working on Shangheist and Gears 4 DLC)
Twisted Pixel (working on Splosion Man 2)
Turn 10 / Playground (working on legacy Forza patches)
Mojang (working on Minecraft 2)
Studio MDHR (working on Cuphead)
Polytron Corporation (working on Fez port, new puzzle-game IP)
Fullbright Company (working on Tacoma, new first-person puzzle-game IP)

Insomniac (2nd-party) (working on Sunset Overdrive 2)
Undead Labs (2nd-party) (working on State of Decay 2)
Reagent Games (2nd-party) (working on Crackdown 3)
Bioware (2nd-party) (working on Mass Effect WRPG)

EDIT - I'm actually surprised there wasn't a "CDPR are proud to announce they've been acquired by Microsoft!" in there too.

I mean... I think Phil has done an incredible job at turning things around for the Xbox One. Is a lack of new first party games really worth discrediting everything else he's done?
i mean he whiffed on arguably the most important part of a home console, so kinda?

and still, that shit was pretty weird

When he says the team he is referring to 1P, Xbox Live Team, Platform team. Xbox gets a set budget they don't have indefinite resources. So he focused the budget into improving platform updates and course correcting because that will be slowing down they can focus now on improving studios available for content. This could be bringing a second team online at a Studio or acquisitions, investment or brand new studio.

I'll agree to disagree there. I do believe that first party games add a ton of value to a console and they give people a reason to "stay" with a given platform. However, I don't think they're the "most important" part of a console at all.

But yeah... I won't argue that the whole "candidate Phil" think was pretty weird in some respects. I like and respect the man greatly, but I wouldn't go making T-shirts or posters of him.

WHERE
IS
RARE

I mean, I know they're working on Sea of Thieves, but what on earth is Microsoft doing with their amazing stable of IP? I thought Rare Replay in 2015 was the start of something great but they've done absolutely nothing since then. I can understand the lack of Banjo as perhaps they just want to give Yooka-Laylee some time to breathe out of courtesy, but there's no excuse for the complete dearth of Conker, Perfect Dark, Battletoads, Viva Pinata, Mr. Pants, and so on... okay, maybe not Mr. Pants.

The last Xbox exclusive I bought was Rare Replay in 2015, and the next exclusive I'm looking forward to is Voodoo Vince HD... and they're both ports of games I've already played. Phil Spencer loves to talk about how they're going to focus on the games but it's about time we see some results.
