Beware if you're purchasing the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for the d-pad

My pro has worked great since launch. I completed BoTW using the pro controller with no dpad input issues. It's been one of the most comfortable controllers I've used.

If I did have issues I would call Nintendo (or Amazon) and send it back asap. You shouldn't tolerate a defective dpad on a premium controller.

Yeah mine registers a right press as up pretty often. I guess I haven't been that annoyed by it cuz I've only been playing Zelda, but really now that I think about it this is going to make any game that uses the dpad as default unplayable. Really unacceptable for a fucking 70 dollar controller.

Oh man, how the hell do I initiate a return or exchange for Amazon Japan?

Mine does it too and I started by asking myself this exact question...

When playing Zelda and pressing right to select a new weapon it sometimes opens up the rune selection which is mapped to the up position. It can be annoying when in the heat of battle and your sword breaks and you are unable to open the screen to select a new one. )=

Zero issues with mine. First I've heard of this too. I've only used the dpad though for Zelda but haven't had any issues weapon swapping at all. Anyone experiencing it should definitely RMA it with where you bought it or Nintendo directly.

i dont even know why people need this pro controller. the joycons work great

No dpad and I found the joycons on grip too cramped, sticks and buttons too small etc. It's serviceable and fine for portable mode, but wasn't for long multi hour sessions of Zelda for me. And yes I tried split joycons and hated it.

I find the Joycons pretty bloody awful. They'll do in a pinch, but the sticks have huge deadzones and the buttons are pretty unsatisfying to press. The Pro Controller is probably my favourite regular controller ever, and I guess I'm lucky enough to get one with no issues (good thing, too, because I certainly wasn't lucky with the left Joycon problems).

I played and completed Shovel Knight and Blaster Master 0 with it. I almost instantly forgot it wasn't a traditional d-pad when I started, the buttons are so small and close together that you just move your thumb the same as a normal d-pad.

It's not a split d-pad, it's four independant buttons. Even on the PlayStation 1/2/3 controllers, underneath the casing it was one solid disk. This isn't the case in the joy-con because it has to double-up as the main action buttons for multiplayer games, and it's a very different feeling as a result. It's probably not unusable, but at this point, it'd be undoing decades of muscle memory to adapt to.

Nah, it's totally serviceable. I think people are just a little too stubborn to learn new inputs. It's been perfectly fine for Shovel Knight on-the-go for me. Took around 20 minutes to get used to it and I haven't had a missed input since. I'm really curious to try it out with SF2 as I know that's the one situation where it's probably going to be at it's worst. I'm curious if it's still ok for a casual player (I've never been a combo master at fighting games in the first place).

Most of the time, no. However, even though I have giant hands with big thumbs, I still struggle with diagonals on it. When playing Blaster Master Zero, any time I go into the overhead dungeon view, I use the analog stick if I'm playing in handheld mode. I won't want to play VC games with it if they need 8-way directional movement.

They're better than you'd think they'd be, but I still wish there was a Joycon L with a regular dpad.

Thanks all for the impressions and info! I will be interested to give it a whirl and see how I like it. As you said, brinstar, I would like a JCL with a regular d-pad at some point, though. Hopefully that is in the works, I believe there is a patent allowing for that and that Nintendo has indicated they're aware of the demand. Here's hoping!

Hot damn that looks bad, haven't had anything on my end though but I'd send it to Nintendo ASAP if I ever had that issue. Controllers cost way too much to be that faulty.

lol...

I have ordered a Switch, Zelda and a Pro Controller. Still haven't received the stuff, but now I am worried.

I already know that I won't be able to deal with the joycon's "d-pad", so if the Pro Controller sucks, that's going to be a real problem.

Zero issues for me since launch day and I use it exclusively. For the people having problems, have they tried to recalibrate the controller? Maybe that will help?

Is the Joy-Con split d-pad that bad? I had read recent impressions that it was pretty solid.

It's fine. I actually prefer it to the d-pad on the Pro Controller for Bomberman. No problems with Blaster Master either. In fact, I've had the issue in the OP with Blaster Master and the Pro Controller (though, it's really not that bad).

Street Fighter is probably where the joy-con "d-pad" will not suffice.

I have been using the pro controller since day one and I haven't experienced this at all. I'm also very picky about dpads since I use fightpads for all fighters.

Maxcriden with no switch? I am disappointed :p

The joycons are such a "joy" to use, it's easy to get used to using the buttons as dpad.

I find them extremely uncomfortable. I would go as far as to say the worst controllers to ship with a console since the Dreamcast.

Dreamcast controllers weren't terrible. But outside a handful of genres like racers it wasn't a very good controller.

Guess I'll be exchanging mine if a lot of people are saying they don't have this problem. Had worried this was inherent to the controller's design.

Had one since launch day, played over 100 hours on Zelda, zero issues. Certainly never had it open the rune menu when trying to switch weapons etc. Definitely get it swapped if that's happening regularly.

Do people who hate the joycon direction buttons have actually tried them? Or did you automatically dismiss them because it's not a "real" d-pad? Because they work just fine.

Pro controller issue, joycon issue, dock scratching screen issue, etc.

What is going on this time? This is the first time I read and hear a lot of issues with launch Nintendo consoles. Did their QC drop this time?

Well thankfully so far mine hasn't given me any issues, I had it desync once so far nothing else has been an issue.

If I notice anything I'll come back and post about it for sure but hopefully it's not a widespread issue like the joycons.

My controller definitely opens runes when i try to change weapons.

It's this really a manufacturing anomoly that only affects some controllers, and i should exchange it?

Or maybe people without the problem just apply pressure to it differently or something?

Has any single person claimed to have held both a working one and one with this issue?

This happens fairly often to me in Puyo Puyo tetris, and it's obnoxious. Almost wondering if I should send it in for a replacement with my joycons.

Fuck, mine totally does this in Zelda and here I thought it was just too sensitive or I was pressing up without realizing it. :(

Thanks Pete! I'm looking forward to trying Blaster Master sometime soon.

Oh, no, I have a Switch! I just don't have any 2D games for it yet. Maybe we'll try the Snipperclips demo tonight. Thanks!

I have 2, no issues at all. Strangely I prefer the Joycons ATM, maybe that will change as I play more games.

Send it back for a replacement if you have issue.

I've tried them with Blaster Master Zero and I'm not a fan, frankly.

I've the same issue with the pro-controller. When you press your thumb on the right direction, it's very easy to unconsciously shift a bit of weight up, which will engage that direction, despite your thumb coming not even close to it. Not sure they can fix this though, I think it's just the design of the D-pad itself that causes this, though there's people here claiming they've no issues with the D-pad, so who knows.

Kind of frustrating though. The D-pad on the Joy-Con is better than the one on a 70 dollar traditional controller.

been playing a ton of shovel knight recently and have well over 100hrs in zelda not once has this happened to me hell i never heard about it i saw this topic and none of my friends are saying they are having any issues with theirs either.

I get up out of my dpad sometimes on a left, it's not common, but it's definitely happened. Kind of frustrating on such a premium product.

There aren't "a lot of issues". There are a small percentage of people with faulty hardware. GAF just acts as a microscope and makes it seem much larger. Between myself and my 6 other friends/coworkers who have Switches, none of us has had a single issue with our launch machines. No scratches, no joycon issues, no hard locks, no pro dpad issues, nothing. You are only hearing these things from maybe 2-4% of the people who have purchased Switches. That is well within the typical fail rate issue. These are not rampant issues, the way some try to make them out to be.

I had the same experience.

If people are having trouble, contact your vendor if you're within the return policy, or if not contact Nintendo. They're usually pretty good about taking care of people.

Oh this is a defect? I honestly thought it was just a design flaw. This happens to me all the time when playing Puyo Puyo Tetris but the controller is excellent otherwise.

I've had Zelda several times open up the incorrect menu, even when pressing the correct direction. It's the only issue I've had with this controller.

Golgo 13

The Man With The Golden Dong
One of the best controllers I've ever used. Zero issues so far, feels great in the hand. Highly, highly recommended.

That being said, yeah, those with issues should contact Nintendo. They're usually good about taking care of that kind of stuff (and for free, I'd imagine).
