The Lion King is going to be the highest grossing movie of all time, isn't it?

First 3 Billion dollar movie
I'm not exaggerating here

That movie will hit so many demo groups, it's like the perfect storm

Disney marketing machine will be in full effect
Get the tone right, get DAT Money!

I think it's fucked because Power Rangers has much of the same audience and that's doing better than expected. ScarJo has pull but I just don't see that overcoming the other movies chipping at its opening weekend.

Lucy made 460mil. I wouldn't throw out GITS yet, but definitely in a tight spot with FnF following. That's going eat it's pie WW.

I bought the dang Pterodactyl zord for my desk the next morning,
And I haven't cared about Power Rangers since MMPR ended when I was 5 or 6.

Mission accomplished Saban.

Yup. I already have the Legacy Dinozord and Megazord. Looking into getting the Thunder Megazord which is 200 bucks.

and then I got a preorder in for this sexy beast.

But yea. I don't wanna shit up this thread with toy talk lol.

I will say if you are a fan of Power Rangers or have a slight interest in the movie. Go see it for yourself. I think you'll be surprised. It was much better than I thought it was. It was good to me and I wanted to no like it when it was revealed.

GitS could do extremely well overseas. Next week we'll see just how much star power ScarJo has to pull audiences.
I would put good money on Paramount, and even Sony Pictures, to go the way of the Dodo within the next few years.
That's a lot of PlayStations they're gonna leave behind.

March 2017 is up to an estimated $1.045B to date. It will be easily over $1.1B by next Friday.

The previous March record was set last year at $949M.

Yeah I'm still unsure how to feel about GiTS. Scar Jo has some serious pull like we saw with Lucy but I'm not sure if the movie itself will be any good or not.

Right now I'm leaning towards a situation where it kinda does poorly domestic but plays well overseas. A somewhat reverse Power Rangers situation

I'll be there for that Thursday showing

Power Rangers was better than it had any right to be imo. I would like to see a sequel with the same cast.

I'll go see it each day the weekend it opens. Including Thursday. Showings will be sold out all damn day.

And I bought that Legacy Green Ranger figure for my shelf after watching too many hours of the marathon. I haven't bought a PR figure since I was a kid. Hell I'm even going back to watch In Space on Netflix since I missed all of it during the marathon.

They got me hook, line, and sinker.

In Space was great. Check out Lightspeed Rescue, SPD and RPM if you haven't already.

It's great seeing this thread more active. I'm always shocked there aren't dozens of pages every week because there is great commentary in here.

I was going through trailers on YouTube after Justice League dropped, saw a trailer for Valerian City of a Thousand Planets or some shit like that

So Fifth Element redux?

People will cheer in theaters at The Lion King like it's a Star Wars or Marvel movie. The opening song, if it's in the movie, will make people weep.

Pretty much. It's based on a comic that Besson partly ripped off for the Fifth Element. I don't see it doing well and I don't have that much faith in Besson these days but I'm excited for it anyway. It looks like a pretty faithful adaptation.

Agreed.

And then we spend the rest of the time shitting on Bronson. He gave us plenty of ammunition this week by saying he hates Arnett as Batman.

I think there's a great chance it gets a sequel honestly. At least one more. It'll make back it's budget and they'll most likely give it one more go.

Word of Mouth i've seen so far has been pretty positive.

The budget is very reasonable (100m), but I think the only way it'll get a sequel if it does well in China. Will see! I think it would have been done a bit better if it hadn't been released a weekend after the Beauty & The Beast, which is crushing everything everywhere, literally.

September is next...

This March is actually pretty insane. Here is a list of months that had bigger domestic box office than what March 2017 will end up with:

1) Jul 2011 - $1.395B
2) Jul 2016 - $1.371B
3) Jul 2013 - $1.371B
4) Jul 2012 - $1.320B
5) Jul 2010 - $1.319B
6) Dec 2015 - $1.305B
7) Jul 2007 - $1.304B
8) Jun 2013 - $1.246B
9) Jul 2008 - $1.245B
10) Jun 2015 - $1.234B
11) Dec 2016 - $1.191B
12) Jul 2015 - $1.184B
13) Jul 2009 - $1.161B
14) Jul 2006 - $1.158B
15) Jul 2004 - $1.152B
16) May 2013 - $1.141B (March 2017 could theoretically top this if next week's openers overperform)

So a top 20 of all time month, and 5th or 6th biggest month ever outside of July.

Wow beastly legs.
More Worldwide Updates:

Logan - $566M (third highest in the franchise behind Deadpool and DOFP)
Fifty Shades Darker - $378M
The Great Wall - $331M
The LEGO Movie - $293M
A Dog's Purpose - $178M
Moana - $617M
Sing - $600M
Hidden Figures - $220M
Fifty Shades Darker is having huge drop from Grey.

I think that's still the old trailer from last year. Shouldn't we get a new trailer soon?

Edit:
Next week. Yay.

It's still more than enough for them to go ahead with the end of their series. I doubt we see a huge budget jump for the last film though.

Anyone want to make last minute predictions for Ghost in the Shell? It is more or less getting a full worldwide release outside of China and Japan next weekend.

I heard that Power Rangers would have been pretty good if they didn't actually BECOME Power Rangers in the film.

I was never really a fan of PR as I didnt' watch it regularly when I was younger, but once they became power rangers, was kinda the turning point for me. That's kinda when it set in that I was watching a movie based on taht super cheesy TV show from the 90's/00's.

But having saying that, once i accepted it for what I already knew it was, it wasn't bad.
but I still wonder
where did all the gold go!? that should have been the richest town in America the moment the final battle ended.

The Disney/Marvel hype train has long coattails.

GAF prefers to talk about the DCEU. The first three weekends of BvS were over 1k posts a piece. The first weekend was just shy of 3k posts before the thread was locked. Beauty and the Beast opened higher and got a bit more than 500 posts last week. The first two weeks of Suicide Squad were over 800 posts as well.

Wonder Woman will save Box Office GAF.

Moreso if it disappoints. GAF wants to see its superheroes bleed.

Didn't see the movie, but if the trailer I saw on Friday is anything to go by, I can see why he's not the lead.

I'm almost willing to bet that
he didn't make it to the end of the movie and probably had less than 20 minutes screen time.
if you made that bet, you'd be collecting some cash

I'll go with a final Box Office of $350 with Domestic Opening at $35 million

I'm guessing overseas will be where the movie performs better

Power Rangers did not cost $100 million by the way. It's budget was around $30 million I believe so for once they're including a somewhat estimated amount of marketing budget with the films budget on BOM.

Are comedies just DOA at the box office now? I saw ads for Chips everywhere, and it still tanked.

Any predictions on the drop for Power Rangers next week? I was wrong about it bombing, but something tells me that GitS might come in even lower.

No, the budget was $100M. However, Lionsgate funds the majority of their films by selling off the foreign distribution rights, so their share of the budget for Power Rangers was probably in that $30M range.

Lionsgate is going to make money on Power Rangers. Some foreign distributors are going to get screwed. We'll see if the balance between the two groups is enough to pay for a sequel.

PR has good word of mouth so it should help it out but I'd expect the average drop, maybe less. Between 50% to as low as 40%. GitS might do well overseas because China has no taste but it might just make it over $120-$150 million domestic total.

Yup, just checked. Interesting business model that works on the bigger summer films, wonder how this will do overseas.

Lol at anyone who was saying that WB should double down on Lego super heroes over live action

Yo be nice mofucka

China has no taste

I got a taste for droppin' you~ :p

Is it just me or is Kong not doing too great?

I think it's doing pretty good

The Force Awakens threads were fairly entertaining. And huge.

We'll see how The Last Jedi plays.

GET YOUR BOYS IN CHECK

I got zero patience for jobbers

The Force Awakens was one of the top 5 most impressive box office runs in the 40 years since the original Star Wars, so it makes sense.

Rogue One was surprisingly quite in contrast.

We'll see how the Last Jedi does. It will likely be our first $200M+ opening in 2 years. I expect Episode 9 to have a better shot at a new weekend record though.
