Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

How can you tell it's a shmup party?

CRT sitting on its side and nobody is concerned.

Funny thing too; that was easily the largest TV present (34" or 36", I believe) but it was the best candidate for being turned sideways despite that. The stand had to be pulled out further from the wall than planned just to set it down that way without putting a hole in the wall.

As it turns out, I am going to have to right it soon to try to troubleshoot the front controls, which I think suffered some water damage after it rained unexpectedly while I was transporting the TV in a pickup truck.

It was! That's one's a local friend's.

I raided a Radio Shack (probably the last one standing, but not for much longer) for parts that could have in theory let us split and capture JAMMA video, but we just didn't have time to put anything together.

Thanks for the heads up. Astebreed will be mine.

I like to think that Edelweiss's work with Ether Vapor and Astebreed went straight into the shooting sections of Nier Automata.

Like, you imagine Yoko Taro booting up Astebreed stage 1 in front of the team, and going "now make it like that"

What are everyone's favorite cute-'em-ups? I love the Twinbee series and Harmful Park, but Parodius is my favorite SHMUP series, and Sexy Parodius is my favorite SHMUP ever. Looking for more stuff in a similar vein to play.

Trouble Witches Origin on Steam is what you want.

Star Parodier has always been my absolute favorite. Definitely check it out for PC-Engine.

Thanks! I'm not the biggest danmaku fan, mainly because I dislike how the bullets and collectibles almost always clash aesthetically with the rest of the game and the sounds are always so grating, but I'll check these out. Unfortunately I don't intend to ever get a 360, so hopefully Muchi Muchi Pork will get a Steam port someday.

Totally forgot about this one. Star Soldier is an awesome series so I really need to play this. Can't remember if it's on Wii VC or not. Hopefully it is.

Can't believe I forgot about Fantasy Zone. Love this series as well, especially the Tears of Opa-Opa. What a crazy story that game has. FZ II W on the 3DS is a great updated port.

top notch! looks like you guys had a good turnout with cool dudes.

our chicago meet has been dwindling ever since dr. boom moved out of state but it's still cool seeing our small group tackle their specialties.

Muchi Muchi Pork for sure.
love me some MMP! just nabbed a PCB not too long ago and have been trying to crank some new 1.0 scores as fast as I can.

Amazing game that I never played until many years after its release.

Can't wait. I saw in the other thread that it was announced for Steam as well. Is that still a thing? If so I wonder if Garegga will follow.

You missed my reply there, didn't you?

No, DFK Steam was handled by Degica. They were both announced at the Cave Festival last year, thus the combined news thread. Dangun was not announced for Steam.

Also, via Shmups forum, check the page source on the Dangun page too.

one of my favorite (and best) cave games! :)
I would also like a disc release but I'm not getting my hopes up.

so glad it didn't get scrapped again like it did last gen.

knowing M2 they should probably have both fever sos and dangun feveron versions with and without the true last boss invincibility bug - not that I'll unlock the TLB any time soon but it'd be nice for it to be another hyper accurate port.

Question about Salamander 2.

Wasn't there a non-Japanese Life Force 2 arcade release? If not in NA, then perhaps Asia?

I found flyers for the Japanese version of Life Force, which had differences from the original Salamander.

So far I've only been able to find Japanese flyer & marquee materials for Salamander 2, nothing on a Life Force 2 release.

I vaguely recall there was some way of changing Salamander 2's title screen to display Life Force 2, but I can't find any info about it now.

The PSX/Saturn Salamander collection has a code that lets you turn Salamander 2 to "Life Force 2" but it's basically the same game with tweaked difficulty and a new logo, they didn't change the art or any of the systems at all.

I can't answer the Life Force 2 question, but last week I re-animated my PSP and the Salamander Portable UMD was in the drive :D

I still need to pick that one up. I've got the Gradius, Parodius, and Twinbee PSP collections but the Salamander one has gotten expensive.

We need to have Salamander 2 for Arcade Archives on PS4.

A good job was done with Life Force and Gradius II. I especially like the scanline options, that makes a huge difference.

Been playing Salamander 2 via MAME on a 42" LED. Such an awesome game.

But I want an official NA release complete with leaderboards, etc.

Was also thinking about getting the Saturn compilation.

why are you cheating using 18 credits =P

use just one =)

I've been considering a budget PC build to run on my cabs, to try to get stuff like dualscreen Dariusburst or Crimzon Clover working. What minimum specs should I be looking at? Any other PC games I should consider while I'm at it?

I need to get a budget PC as well. If you find out any pointers let me know. Just need to drive some 55" HDTVs I bought last year specifically for the game. But I have no idea what to buy that does dual HDMI out.

Under Defeat really screws with me.

I like the game well enough but I don't play it enough to get fully used to the shot orientation.

Might as well mention, Mamorukun Curse! The game is really cute and fun to play.

Game Paradise (Saturn version). An ode to old arcade games and shmups, with 2 main leads and 2 bosses draining your tetosterone levels

I think the whole "you have to only play with one credit" attitude actually stops people from getting better at shmups. If you are actually serious about getting a 1cc then credit feeding is the best way to familiarise yourself with the later levels short of setting up save states or having sccess to a practice mode.

I used to completely burn out on shmups because after breezing through the first couple of levels would hit a wall then rinse and repeat. That way you become overly familliar with the start of the game and dont have the same experience with the actually difficult sections and patterns later in the game. So get the knowledge first of ALL the game, then you can go for the 1cc when you know if like the back of your hand.

Im more bothered about the aspect rato!
