COMICS!!! |OT| April 2017 - Now Featuring Superstar Artist Brett Booth - APRIL FOALS!

I watched the whole thing. It wasn't over until after midnight EST. Between that and NXT Takeover the night before, that's about 10 hours of wrestling this weekend. I legit needed time to recover after that much wrestling. It was a much better show than the last two Wrestlemanias, which were both quite disappointing.

Hahah damn, 3 hours and I was savaged. I totally forgot Wrestlemania was even longer than the average PPV. What I saw was good enough fun. I'm not sure I feel compelled to watch the last 2 hours but it was good fun to put on live. Surprised about how much focus/respect they seem to pay the women now, which was basically a joke when I used to watch (treated as one I mean, not that I viewed it as one). I need to check out this NXT thing.

Decided on Tokyo Ghost, I'ma read vol 1-2 straight through this evening. Then I don't ever need to go to Japan.

Her look is the only good thing about sorcerers supreme. What a let down.

Also holy shit that's a lot of reading. You should find a community where people actually read comics.

Um, wow. 250 in less than a week!?

I have a surface pro. Turn it sideways and roll mouse wheel down for victory.

I also read at a stupid fast rate, like 1500+ wpm
I am Bane has been excellent from start to finish so I'm definitely excited for War of Jokes and Riddles

I am Bane is so good. I'm convinced that every hero needs two major villains to be complete: a character than who would be them in other circumstances (Bane) and a character that is the opposite of them completely (Joker).

Still not sure what they could do, beside the obivious with the Events.
Writers are not coming back ever again I guess. So I really dont know.

Yeah. The are was really good.
Marvel needs to put the spotlight back on their top heroes in traditional stories and have them share it with the new generation of heroes. They also need to get rid of some ongoings, cut down on the line wide events, and reduce the number of $5+ issues.

There's a lot of other things they could do, but this is just some obvious things. Some of these things seem to be happening and Marvel has been talking to retailers who bring these things up so we'll see what they do.

Going through and reading Bendis's All New/Uncanny X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Where does these runs intersect with Hickman's Infinity and Secret Wars? Do they all end like right before Secret Wars? Is there some sort of intersection for Infinity, or atleast a banner on the issues signifying the Infinity event was happening at that time even if the issues dont Tie-In? When does the Black Vortex event take place? Before or after Secret Wars?

Seems really strange that out of all of Marvel's books, Guardians doesnt deal with Infinity. I mean the best parts of the last Guardians book was how there was this constant threat looming with Annihilation. It spent a great deal of time preparing for it and then after it was over, dealt with the ramifications. Then right after there was War of Kings and Annihilation Conquest/Thanos Imperative.

I didn't read Guardians at all, but Bendis' X books do not intersect with any of Hickman's stuff. There is the crossover between Guardians and All-New X-Men though, and that's dope. Otherwise the X-books are all basically their own thing.

It's kinda hard to predict what will happen with the new Spider books. A lot of the previous books seem to be wrapping up though.

Gwen and Miles are staying. If there's any justice, Silk will too. They can cancel everything else.

They gotta bring back Kaine... they gotta...
Biggest thing about this year's Wondercon was the astounding lack of any real news from the big two.

The more I look at it JLA is an Batman and the outsiders book with Justice League branding to get sales.

Marvel has no real presence at the show

High five fellow quick reader! Takes me about 3-5 minutes for an issue, assuming I don't get caught up in something else.

(I'm not 1500wpm tho that's nuts)

And yeah, King's done an incredible job of elevating Bane's role in the Batman rogues' gallery. Before, he basically had 2 things: Knightfall (and the endless repetitions thereof, like Europa) and Secret Six, which was way more about him as a character independent of Batman, Gotham, and even Santa Prisca. This is really kind of reframing the character back into that dark reprisal of Batman mold, right down to taking the original Knightfall plan and literally reversing it. Also a powerful statement on why Batman does what he does and why Bane is so desperate to get his hands on the Pirate; in the King metaphor, Bane was coming back to life.

Gerry Duggan is on Comedy Bang Bang this week. Hopefully he's funnier on a podcast than he is as a writer.
Duggan writes a good Deadpool imo.
How is Venom doing?
Marvel seems to be fine with it and I expect it to stick around given that Brock is coming back and the 2017 Spider-event will seemingly be Venom themed.

Kaine is going to be in the new Scarlet Spider book.

Yea I didnt think they would but what I was wondering was when does Secret Wars take place during Bendis's time on X-Men and Guardians. Does all 3 of those series end right before Secret Wars begins?

Silk seems to be done and we don't know what will happen with Gwen after Rodriguez leaves. Miles is safe though.

They end before with the next volume of Guardians picking up after.

David Gabriel said:
Discussed candidly by some of the retailers at the summit, we heard that some were not happy with the false abandonment of the core Marvel heroes and, contrary to what some said about characters ”not working," the sticking factor and popularity for a majority of these new titles and characters like Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, The Mighty Thor, Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, and Moon Girl, continue to prove that our fans and retailers ARE excited about these new heroes. And let me be clear, our new heroes are not going anywhere!

I wish Gwenpool was on that list, cause she's wasted in camoes. Like, no one understands her thing and people keep writing her wrong.

Ok awesome, thanks!

When does the Black Vortex event take place? Is that also before Secret Wars, I assume like right before? Never heard about it until I was looking at reading orders online and a bunch listed reading something called Black Vortex right at the end of his X books and Guardians.

Apparently Gamestop is allowing customers to come pick up Persona 5 tonight at 9pm if anyone here is getting it!

It's before. Bendis leaves the X-books when Secret Wars starts.

As someone who tries to read slightly above speaking speed, but also takes time to evaluate the page as a whole, how are you able to soak in not just the writing but the art of an issue in 3-5 minutes?

This question goes even moreso to Malyse.

Depends on the art. If it's just doing your standard storytelling stuff, it happens all at once. You read the words, the art produces the mental picture, and you see the scene play out in your head in basically the same moment.

Stuff that's more... visually striking? Might not be the word for it. When the art exists for the sake of the visual, rather than just (I say "just" but really it's an achievement in and of itself that it works that well) I'll stop and just soak it in. That pop art issue of We Are Robin, large chunks of Lemire/Sorrentino GA, that sorta thing, that takes longer.

Shitty art I mostly just ignore lol.

Ah, yeah. I guess I just like to really absorb the visuals. The facial expressions, the composition, etc.

One of the major culprits was that the All-New, All-Different relaunch turned out not to be all that new or different, with at least 24 series continuing on post-”Secret Wars" with the same creative team, or at least the same writer. In almost every single case, those continuing series saw dramatic sales drops after their initial relaunch.

Another culprit? Between October 2015 and February 2017, Marvel launched or relaunched at least 104 ongoing superhero series, for an average of about six new #1s a month. That is an astounding number of titles. Unsurprisingly, a very large number of these series have failed to find an audience: roughly a quarter (25) were canceled with 10 or fewer issues published; at least another seven books (7 percent) launched in late-2016/early-2017 appear to be very likely to meet the same fate, even if their cancellation has not yet been formally announced.

Holy shit.

Marvel relaunching everything after Secret Wars inflates that number. They still have too many books though.

What if instead of not making it past the fall, it spawns another Gwenpool series and then we have two Gwenpool books running at the same time?!
People legitimately hate her because of how she was conceived. It also seems like only the creative team on her ongoing can get it right.

Unless I really really really love the art, I read comics for the storyline. You rarely need to see *all* the details. I also reread lots; I've been through the entire run of Gwenpool a half-dozen times. Now, something like Monstress or even WicDiv gets more time so I can luxuriate in all the wonderful.

I just want this to happen. Though it will prolly be more like this (nsfwish)

It seems to indicate that Marvel has no fucking idea what they're doing or who they're trying to market to. I would argue that their pricing structure may be part of the problem, too. There are plenty of Marvel books I would be picking up if everything wasn't at least $4.
The war is over, MU won.

It's just one hit after the other after the other:

In February 2017, Marvel published only two ongoing superhero series that sold above 40,000 single issues: “The Amazing Spider-Man” (61,953) and “The Mighty Thor” (40,175). The predecessors of both series were among Marvel’s top sellers in 2015, with their last pre-“Secret Wars” issues selling 88,338 and 86,222 copies, respectively. The remainder of Marvel’s top 10 books all sell in the 35-39,000 copy range. Prior to “Secret Wars,” Marvel’s top 10 ongoing superhero titles were all selling above 50,000 copies per month. That is a significant drop in sales, indicating a hollowing-out of Marvel’s customer base.

Marvel also is trying to tie comics with movies. Why else would fucking Quake be leading a team? I mean, I legit loved her in Secret War when she was introduced
though that might be bleed over from SW's Oh. My. Fuck. good art
, but there's are reason she's got a team, just like there's a reason that Iron Fist relaunched and those reasons are the same.

None of which actually matters, cause I will 1000% fuck you, got mine if I get a new Cloak & Dagger ongoing and a new Runaways ongoing.

OH OH! Runaways with Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. Straight in my gawddam veins marvel.

I actually really really liked Hickman's Secret Warriors series. So glad I grabbed the omnibus when it came out.

After Secret Wars, Marvel's quality took a huge hit imo. Yes there were some good series that were released but nothing that felt above average. Plus DC's Rebirth came out right around that time which just destroyed Marvel in the sales charts for months, if not still.

Stuff like having separate ongoing series for each of the individual Guardians characters was a huge mistake. Plus random character like Foolkiller got their own on going that seriously no one asked for lol.

I think people were hoping after Secret Wars Marvel would have done a complete reset just like DC had with Rebirth and were seriously disappointed when it was just more of the same.

I am sure the 100+* mediocre to shitty Secret Wars tie-ins helped the momentum.

* This number is extrapolated because I got tired after reading 30-40 of the 200+ tie-ins.

This actually isn't true. Foolkiller is interesting because they got the perfect writer(I noted this when the book was announced) and it ended up being amazing. A lot of the weird book announcements have started me reason behind them whether that should justify it happening or not.

I wouldn't really call Rebirth a reset because it was more of a correction.

Holy shit.
I've been saying this for awhile. Now combine that lack of series confidence with $4 cover price. Why in the world would you even bother to give something a try?

You spend what $16-20 to see if the first arc is good and then what. Watch it get cancelled in another 4 issues for a new set of titles.

MU is the only sane way to consume Marvel comics. Just know there's a good likelihood you are reading series that are about to end when you get to reading issue #1. But I can wait the 6 months. No problem

Atleast since Rebirth DC has had the most sold comics on sales charts. Now im still more of a Marvel fan, but DC has definitely been doing better in terms of numbers for their single issues each month. Ive barely read anything from either company since Secret Wars/Rebirth but from what ive heard, people seem to be alot happier with DC since they did their reset.

Secret wars had a bunch of half good tie-ins and then when it ended Hickman left who was kind of the last writer I really liked that was still there. Gwenpool though!
