Even after the Creators Update, the Windows 10 Store is still a broken mess

But GAF said with play anywhere the Xbox One is pointless?

do you expect some new ads from Microsoft coming out soon with :

"xbox one get one today! or you can try on PC but good luck with win10 store!!! hahahaha!!!"

???? is this really your argument against pc?

its not just big files either , even something like a rar extractor I had to choose 3, two hung up on "download pending" for eternity, the third one downloaded.

A lot of unfair characterizations here. The fact of the matter is, the problem of transferring data from a remote server to a local device remains an essentially unsolved problem in the domain of computer science.

Indeed, some of the greatest minds of our generation, including Andrew Tridgell, Abhay Bhushan, Tim Berners-Lee and Bram Cohen, have all attempted to tackle this problem but as of yet, no practical, reliable mechanism exists for solving the aforementioned problem.

So let's maybe cool it with the Microsoft ridicule, shall we?

10/10. You should write for Digital Foundry.

I understand that windows is a complex package to manage but how can they not make a functional download service after all this time.

Its funny because in the past 2 years there has been like 3 other PC gaming clients released that put Win10 store to shame. Epic Launcher, Bethesda launcher and GOG galaxy all make the Win10 store look like a joke in terms of gaming. Microsoft is the largest software company in the world with thousands of engineers yet they can't release a PC client that can properly download, install and update games. Amateur hour at Redmond.

Please sir, you are really not helping here.

Theoretically speaking it is true that there is not a definite way to guarantee a successful transfer of a packet from one end in the network to another, however in reality engineers have developed many different methods to improve network performance and fast, reliable and convenient large-file distribution over Internet is virtually a non-issue for most companies today. Those endeavors have been well established in most modern software distribution systems and it is indeed pathetic that Windows Store is not one of them. Even those pirates in the age of dial-up connections know that a large file (such as a game package) is better distributed as multiple compressed volumes so that their "customers" do not need to re-download the entire package when one single file is damaged during transfer, I do not see why Microsoft fails to implement this.

Bought a Forza Horizon 3 code, redeemed it and started the download.

First, for some reason it listed two active downloads on the "Downloads & Updates" page of the store app, one was "Forza Horizon 3" and the other "Forza Horizon 3 - Standard Edition". Weird glitch I thought but it seemed to have been downloading the game fine.

Then, when the download hit about 49GB of the total 52GB, the download reset and started from the very beginning again. So, yeah, that's not very fun, especially when you don't have the fastest internet.

I've had the same issue with Quantum Break about a year or so ago but I mean ... it's April 2017 now, I'm running the latest version 1703 (aka Creators Update) and Microsoft has still not been able to provide a properly functioning store, at least for apps larger than a few hundred megabytes. That honestly blows my mind, and not in a good way.

Have you ran update on the Windows Store app? The Windows Store app should have an update.

I was running updates on two Win10 computers I've had offline for maybe two months, and I had a weird issue where the Store app would just have an unannounced crash while apps updated. The download progress was still there when I opened it up again, so I didn't have OP's issue, but it happend more than once. I was running a LOT of updates.

OP, your double FH3 issue, was it actually downloading two 50+ gb files, or was one maybe an unlock key?

It's more a topic of software engineering instead of developer competence here actually.

Windows Store is handled in Windows division, even though it is used to distribute games from XBOX division. The user story "As a gamer I should be able to download a large game package quickly, reliably and conveniently" is of very low priority for the Store team, as how well Microsoft performs in PC gaming is actually none of their business.

Long story short: XBOX team has the responsibility (promote PC/Windows gaming under XBOX brand) but not the duty; Windows team has the duty (improve Store performance) but not the responsibility. A typical YP problem of modern business management: "It is YOUR PROBLEM now".

I like the games, but they need to get their platform shit together.

Having the 70 something GB Gears 4 download get to 90%, 4 or 5 times, then start itself over, is what made me refund the game and swear off ever using the store again.

This happened to me and luckily it was before data caps were implemented the next month on my Comcast account. Otherwise, trying to download GoW4 unsuccessfully would have used up HALF of my monthly allotted data per month (it redownloaded so many times that it was about 500 GB worth of downloads).

I had to download almost 500gb to get Gears 4 working. I won't bother with the store again, atleast not until it's 100% fixed. I have a 20Mb connection, it did take a while. Thank goodness it wasn't when I had 3Mb.

It fixed my issue with not being able to download Killer Instinct but my copy of Halo Wars: Definitive Edition that plays fine on my Xbox won't download and just says it's not available. It's always one step forward one step back with the windows store. I didn't dare pause the Killer Instinct download in case it broke again!

The progress bar was 1:1 identical for the two download entries, both showed a total size of 52GB but it only downloaded the files once because it only reserved 52GB on the SSD. There wasn't enough disk space for it to download 100GB+ anyhow.

Interesting. I would note that you should only download the "Standard Edition" manually, don't depend on that "app"...they did Forza stupid.

I aborted the download after the reset, rebooted and am now downloading "Forza Horizon 3". If that doesn't work either, I'll give the "Standard Edition" one a try.

Yeah I had an absolute nightmare trying even find the option to download my copy of FH3. It didn't appear in my library, no matter how many times I refreshed, re-entered the code or logged in/out. I even accessed my account via the app which said that it was on my account but wouldn't let me start my download.

Eventually, I discovered that, and I'm not making this up, I had to fumble about the store until I came across an advertisement for FH3, watch the full ad, then at the end it would present a link to buy the game and only THEN did it present for me the option to download the game.

Oh, and only the standard edition, not the Ultimate Edition that I paid good money for. Fuck you MS. They don't give a shit about gamers.

Not only is the store crap but whatever games have issues will never be fixed thanks to ruining modding.

Forza Horizon 3 on PC is a fucking waste.

It doesn't need to be complicated. Valve has pioneered the landscape and how it should be done on PC for more than a decade. All others followed suit like Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft etc.

Phil needs to put his foot down and somehow have windows division delete all GAMING from the win10 store. Leave the store for movies, music, tv and apps. The Xbox app needs to do all the gaming related things. You have a solid client with it. There is no need for gamers to ever go into the Win10 store. There is no need to create some bloated mess of a store that relies on the snail pace update system within win10 like they have now.

Have they ever fixed games requiring double the size to apply updates? Like Gears of War 4 for example has a 500mb update, but requires 80gb of free space to install it (because Windows has to make a full copy of the application or something on your disk). That was crazy the first few days I was trying to get Gears 4 working.

I could NEVER get the store to download FH3, it would always have issues and constantly start over again instead of using the previously downloaded bits.

Impossible to download on my meager 250gb cap successfully so instead I grabbed a torrent with the .appx file and sideloaded it onto my PC. Even seeding to a 1:1 ratio it probably used less bandwidth than the Store app would have, and was much easier to do.

Only thing the store did was turn me off of buying ANYTHING from it ever again (or until they get it fixed.......)

Well, real life is a little more complicated.

Phil appears powerful and important here in the gaming community as the head of XBOX division, yet he has limited influence only inside Microsoft, as his division values little compared to other cash cows (for comparison, XBOX makes 80% less revenue than Cloud Computing division and it has stopped growing for years). It does not help much either that investors have been talking about spinning off the XBOX department and transforming Microsoft into a more business-oriented company for years. Phil can surely make this proposal, but I doubt his argument will get through; Windows team will not be too excited about it either, after all they will lose a decent amount of income/traffic if they are not selling games through Windows Store any more.

TL;DR: Microsoft, as a whole, does not care much about gaming.

Is the Windows Store still at this state...?

So many good memories.

My first taste was with the Forza Motorsport 6: Apex beta. I tried about 20 times to download the game from the store without luck. In the end I download the files from a torrent and install it manually.

Then with Forza Horizon 3. Several attempts to successfully download it. And then they released a simple game update... but no, the store instead of the 1GB update was keep downloading the whole game again and again. I tried every logical or crazy solution and in the end... format.

I still can't believe that in 2016 I made a clean install of a operating system for a single game update.

I haven't had any technical issues with the store but it's an all around poor experience, clearly designed for mobile apps and games. I can't imagine they're doing games any favors by mixing AAA content in with shovelware. Half the results when you search for games are bullshit "trainers" etc

This worked? Wow, I'm surprised they aren't uniquely signed to stop anyone from doing this.

You still need a license so it doesn't really matter

FH3 stopped working for me after the update - even with updated drivers.

Who wants to bet money that these games will continue to work on a potential "Windows 11" in a few years?

Won't be a Windows 11...not anytime soon, not even in a few years.

Doesn't matter to my point.

the Windows store games frequently break or develop issues when Windows is updated.

I can still play quake, I can still play deus ex. I probably won't be able to play FH3 in ten years.

I haven't had a single problem with it and have all the first party games. I'm guessing my clean installs of W10 and Anniversary had something to do with it?

In any case, I wish MS would whip the Windows Store team into shape. I know someone from that team posts here and mentioned that most people have no problems, but I just don't understand why there are any failures at this point.

I always feel guilty when these threads pop up. I downloaded gow4, Fh3, and just a few days ago got halo wars 2. All downloaded without issues and Fh3 even performed pretty well for me. Don't know what it is, but I can't say I have any beefs with win10 store.

I only had issues with Gears of War 4. I attribute it to the code I bought off ebay for $30. This was before the amazon scam was widespread, I didn't even know about it. It messed up some licenses or something in the store.

I also didn't have problems with FH3, even though people don't believe me. I can tell a framerate drop to 55 and FH3 didn't drop. Nor did it stutter. Not even in the zones where it was prime for it to happen.

I think some peoples problems stem from doing the 'upgrade' to windows 10 from a previous version. I had nothing but problems when I did that, but a clean install fixed things. My buddy has had horrific issues for months and I kept telling him to do a clean install. One day his computer wouldn't get past the loading windows screen no matter what he tried. Clean install of W10 and now his shit's better than ever.

I'm not arguing against PC. I'm simply pointing out the fact that alot of posters here state that the Xbox One isn't worth buying because of Play Anywhere titles being on PC, only to then bash the Windows 10 store and go as far as refuse to use it thereby missing out on Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusives. Seems like a lose/lose situation to me!

If the Windows 10 store is that big of an issue just save yourself the hassle and buy an Xbox One.
