Brilliant thread, thank you fatty!

My first SHMUP experience was R-Type on the SEGA Master System. That secret SEGA-level, oh my god - the soundtrack of this game has burnt into my mind... awesome.

Really miss those type of games...

Welcome. What platforms do you have? If R-type is your jam we can almost certainly recommend some stuff to check out, just depends what you have ready access to.

Interestingly, Compile (of Aleste fame) actually made the Master System port of R-Type

Trigon / Lightning Fighters - 1CC (1 Loop) Konami, 1990. - 60fps video.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe Trigon / Lightning Fighters was ever ported to consoles.

Hardcoregaming101:

Similar to Ajax, this is another largely generic overhead shooter, although graphically it feels like a rip-off of Seibu Kaihatsu's Raiden. It offers a two player mode, with an extra catch - there are special power-ups that can only be obtained when playing with someone else. These weapons are saddled in the middle of your fighters, strung together with lasers, and fires off a variety of super powered weapons. The problem is, both players need to survive in order to keep using it. If one of them dies, the weapon falls off. One other slightly notable aspect is the way the levels flow straight into each other after boss fights, giving the appearance of one big, long, continuous stage - sorta like Gradius, but without any intermission segments. The game also utilizes two cool bomb-type power-ups - one is a huge laser saber, the other is a flame dragon that flies around the screen.

Apparently Konami felt this was cool enough that they took this ship and its powers, modified it a bit, giant-sized it, and included it in the Boss Rush stage of Gradius Gaiden. Other than this bit of trivia, it's an enjoyable if not particularly noteworthy shooter, with some excellent music, of course. There aren't any console ports of it either.

Like some other Konami shooters, there are a few differences between the Japanese game (Trigon) and the World versions (Lightning Fighters). Trigon sends you back to a checkpoint when you die, while Lightning Fighters resurrects you immediately. Trigon also has an extra weapon, similar to the two-player orbs, except it can be found in single player. It was removed from Lightning Fighters, for some reason. The digitized speech names for the special weapons are also different.

i don't remember seeing this game. speaking of konami this reminds me of the infamous AJAX.
i was scammed out of my 50 cents by that game being a 7 year old... still have bad feelings about it.

Any thoughts on Graceful Explosion Machine? I'm very much on the fence. Wish there were a demo.

Digging it so far! I think I was hoping for more a Gradius style shooter where you progress through a different parts of levels and ultimately fight a boss, but it's more like Geometry Wars. I'm a big Geo Wars fan as well though so this is definitely scratching that itch. Most of the weapons are pretty satisfying to use as well. I'll definitely keep playing it.

Any thoughts on autobomb mechanics? They feel kinda cheaty to use...

All it effectively does is turn bombs into lives. Although you probably keep any upgrades so more like a "soft death". Not a big deal, you get those bombs to use anyway. The problem with it is ideally bombing should be proactive, with intent. Autobombing can easily lead to bad habits that will need to be unlearned if you want to really learn the game or go for score.

I appreciate auto-bombs for emphasizing when and where I get killed. The bullet that kills you is the one you didn't see coming and auto-bomb is good for pointing out "yo, watch out, here is the guy that blasted you last time."

i do remember a semi auto bomb system in arcade Tiger Heli. very interesting concept at the time.

I'm up to world two. Clicking with me. Definitely starting to pay attention to my combo meter which is making it fun. I little bummed that there was no boss at the end of World one as I was anticipating one.

But a super slick and polished game.

Awesome news. I'll buy it.

I'm glad for the Geo wars comparison. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 1 is one of my favorite games of all time.

Just to be sure about Bullet Soul: is it the same as Infinite Burst on 360? Or is it the vanilla version? I haven't played either, I just want to make sure that "Mode B" on this Steam release is the same as "Burst Mode" that I'm seeing some people talk about.

It is vanilla, not Infinite Burst. Infinite Burst is not out on Steam as of right now.

However, the extra modes in vanilla are not in Infinite Burst, so buying both is not redundant. I think the base game is different between the two as well?

They were supposed to do a iOS version with XV characters.
really? never knew that. it's pretty interesting each each character has different attributes. (more health, more shot power, speed) and each character seems to start out in different areas.

Raiden project count?
i have the NA version for psx. there's a tate mode but idiots didn't give tate control options. i think they took it out for liability but using a gameshark restores tate controls.
