That's sounds like something everyone said before the last ban list update

Harder to activate and the stats are kinda odd.

OK, so I was completely off base with this one. Can't believe they just decided to ignore Bontu's trial, cartouche, and monument when it came to activating him.

I actually kinda like this one. I like that with 2 mana and any creature you can immediately get him to attack that turn, which most of the others can't do. And Menace is a great ability an indestructible beatstick.

Rhonas is still my favorite though, but I certainly wouldn't complain if I pulled Bontu out in limited. Not sure if he'll be viable in constructed, but I can imagine a bunch of ways to play around his downside, like Revolt, token makers like Nest of Scarabs, that new Menace Zombie that pings opponents whenever a Zombie dies, etc.

Why do I need haste on a flash creature?

More flexibility. She still has value as a surprise blocker, or as an EOT setup to a blowout attack on the following turn, or as a regular Haste creature.

Everything on her except Vigiliance "makes sense". Christmas Land is EOT, untap an Exert guy, then cast multiple guys during your main phase for an alpha strike.

I was about to write "please don't post mockup cards during spoiler season"

The hell?

But...it's actually not that bad of a card.

Also, WTF at the ability. Only 3 color Commander in the set, I guess.

Haste is still useful if you want to cast and attack with her the turn you draw her.

EDIT: And it also lets you use her Untap ability immediately.

I mean, it's definitely not bad. I can't imagine a scenario where a 6 power vigilant hasty Fires of Yavimaya that you can flash in whenever you want and untap dudes is bad card.

But it's so.... something. I'm not entirely sure what, but it's definitely something.

I'd love to see a write up of the discussions that went into making this card.

I guess this mean she'll spark in HoD

First full Naya walker perhaps?

I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but there was a Chimera in Theros that was the exact same card as Enigma Drake, just with 3 toughness instead of 4.

Jeeze, WB Zombies seems like it'll be really good in limited. Between embalm and all of the ways to make 2/2 tokens, the uncommon lord, Plague Belcher, and this new guy, that looks like it'll be really powerful.

Spellheart Chimera indeed. It also has trample, but like you said its toughness is only 3. I'd say this is a slight upgrade.

Samut is such an EDH card. They even sneaked in a third mana option in a not very subtle way. The flash is a bit weird but I guess she's meant to be be playable on both offense and defense
Shes totally sparking out and going full Naya next set. Pretty much confirms its a shards set.
I can't wait to see the first planewalker with flash

I'll probably end up keeping my boros deck and upgrading it to Naya thanks to Samut.

I can't get over how good Harsh Mentor is. I'm immediately gonna fit it into my modern and legacy burn deck.

The best way to sneak up on an ancient, all-seeing dragon god is to start wrecking shit right in the middle of his house.

Amonkhet has suspiciously unstrict mana requirements (even the Gods don't require more than a single colored mana for their casting/abilities). I think that it's fairly likely we'll see a strong Shard theme in HOD, starring her and Bolas. (And maybe Jeskai Jace or something lol)

Samut will make a great Naya commander. She can go voltron, tokens or just regular good creatures. Fires effect on a commander with flash is very strong.

By Force is great too. Really, really good. Red is GOOD this set.

Prediction for HoD: None of the Gatewatch die, but Bolas is so pissed that some of his people have decided to rebel against him that he annihilates the entire city and kills all hope of Amonkhet sustaining any kind of civilization.

Which leads the Gatewatch to go "Man, we really didn't think that through, did we?" And that's about all the comeuppance they get.

I was talking with my brother about this set this morning and my comments were:
1) This set looks about normal to me on having cards that I am interested in for EDH purposes,
2) This set looks pretty powerful and fun for limited,
3) I am a dummy when it comes to standard (and not very good at limited), so I'll leave the actual judgments to other people.

So today's story revealed that there was 8 gods of Amonkhet before Bolas showed up, so that's going to be fun for next set.

Also was surprisingly well written considering it focuses on Nissa. Using her to show how badly Bolas warped the plane Decades ago is definitely an interesting view.

It also pretty much confirms that Chandra wants to boink Nissa. They even edited this out

Nissa continued. "On Zendikar, I was without the company of people for most of my life. The plane was the closest thing to a friend I had. Learning to trust has been . . . slow—and there is still much for me to learn. Understanding and sustaining friendships is daunting when one has never really done it before."
Chandra shifted awkwardly. "So . . . friendship is about the limit of what you feel comfortable with right now?"
Nissa blinked. Chandra worked very hard not to stare.
"Yes," Nissa said, "I suppose so, given everything at hand."
"Ah."

to this

Chandra shifted awkwardly. "So . . . friendship?"
Nissa blinked. Chandra worked very hard not to stare.
"Yes," Nissa smiled.
Nissa closed her eyes, and took another deep breath, her headache receding. It felt good to confess insecurities. She smiled and looked Chandra in the eye.
