I'm out of the loop. What I want to know is, why does the world generally hate North Korea?

Because it has a crazy and unpredictable dictator, is officially still at war with South Korea and has the power to kill countless millions of people there. He is also very bad towards his own people, and is investing lots in developing weapons to not only be able to harm South Korea, but also Japan, the US and then the world.

Nothing is good :D

We have rhetoric on both sides (This time with not one mad man but possibly two mad men in charge of either side), US sends carrier group to korea, american media smells a war and goes wild, NK shows off ICBM that has never been tested and gaf is a mixture between "We'll destroy them", "WW3" and "Oh no i'm scared".

War is unlikely because it would destroy NK, SK and possibly Japan. Unless Trump goes fuck them nothing will happen.

Nah the US, UK and Russia all agreed they'll protect ukraine:

The rhetoric from NK has been the same for the last 20 years and hasn't really changed.
What has changed is the aggressive rhetoric from the US. Trump has seen war is good for his polls and the american media is just as glad to jump on it (Looking at this thread so are some americans).

Maybe the rhetoric is the same old same old from NK, but the actual development of city destroying weapons has changed over the past two decades.

Which is why any military action is now too late because it would mean sacrificing your closest ally in asia.

I doubt the north korean regime will get toppled during my lifetime.

No country in the region wants to deal with a Post-NK reality.

You're right.

The media really wants war.

I'm guessing China got North Korea to back down.

Will NK tell their people otherwise? Probably.
What if they weren't even planning a missle launch? Satellite imagery suggested it, but that doesn't mean it was 100% going to happen.

I know this is probably old news but Jesus Christ this is not a dick waving competition it's fucking nukes
This is part of the problem. Get these people off of Twitter.

I agree.

But I honestly don't know what's the best way to deal with it. Doing nothing and keeping peace will prevent any kind of major fallout in the coming decades. But if NK can just improve on their tech for decades to come and Kim Jong gets some even more delusional ideas than he already has, NK can become a massive risk to the world. Especially when the guy is old and on his deathbed. I mean, the guy sure as hell does not care for his people. NK is unpredictable and has nukes, that worries me to say the least. Even if this is all unlikely to actually happen, there is still a risk and one that can be absolutely catastrofic to any country when it happens.

How about you like a neighbor who makes bombs and likes to play with his grenades in his backyard and threatens the neighborhood.
The problem here is that these grenades have the power to blow up the entire neighbourhood in one fell swoop.

What the fuck happened to the concept of deterrence? Are we so far removed from the Cold War that people just don't care anymore?

Anything's possible, but there was too much noise around it from all sides to say 'eh, it was never going to be anything' especially from China. It seemed like everybody was going over there.

"Fight's on" is not the message that should be sent, and certainly not by a general.
But what if the "fight" in question is just increasingly intricate displays of war machines on the tarmac? Like a Dance Off. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

It's always a dick waving competition. It's called show of force and it's routinely used as a deterrent to actual use of force. Outside of a few proxy wars the entire Cold War was nothing, but dick waving. NK knows they would get wiped in a conventional war. So they dick wave with nukes to remind everyone not to fuck with them, that is countered by conventional dick waving to remind them what happens if they use their nukes.

"Fight's on" is not the message that should be sent, and certainly not by a general.

Yeah Fights on isn't great.

F-15C pilots are always salty, because they are air to air fighters with noone to fight.

If and when we don't attack, North Korea will claim victory so that they can look strong inside their warped bubble. Let them. Far better than a war.

Twitter should not be the medium for this stuff, let alone by using language reminiscent of college football rivalries.
Why should Gen. Goldfein not be able to send that message?
There's no official conflict going on for one thing. Military personnel should not be jumping the gun, pardon the pun.

Twitter is fine. Fights on is weird. I was trying to see if maybe it's a motto of Kadena AB in some way. Like the 56FW is cave tonitrum(beware the thunderbolt). It's very possible.

I'm not sure if you're serious, but a General should not be going out of his way to antagonize others or increase the chance for conflict.
The same message with something more benign, but still strong like "Always vigilant" or "Ready for anything" would be just as effective without being quite so antagonistic.

That's disgusting. No one should be excited about military conflict.

He's in the army.

Out of the three people (two in the army one in the Marines) I know in the armed forces, 100% of them relish going into battle. Not sure if it's the mentality they instil in them and deep down behind the bravado they would rather not - but that's what they want.
