ARMS Invitational featuring Dabuz, Abadango, and Momochi

This apparently happened a couple months ago but flew under the radar. It hasn't been posted here before as far as I know.

Nintendo invited a bunch of competitive fighting game players including Dabuz and Abadango of Smash fame and Momochi from Street Fighter.

The full tournament has been mirrored on Youtube.

This was before the recent Direct so no Min Min and I don't think the elemental system is on display yet.

Afterwards Dabuz gave his thoughts on the game here.

Additionally the official Japanese Twitter account is now regularly posting screenshots, art, and updates like they did for Splatoon leading up to release.

Get Inside Her!
Just finished watching this from the other thread. Was rooting for that one guy mainly just cause he wasn't Japanese but then I turned on him after his incessant head-nodding pushed me over the line.

Shit was intense tho, once they knocked out the people who clearly had no idea what they were doing. This game's gonna be pretty sweet.

This game is a lot more faster paced and fun to watch then what Nintendo's videos has shown.

Like that one moment when Ninjara dodges the Super repeatedly is hilarious.

Interesting. I can see it now.

*Nintendo announce ARMS Tournament the weekend of E3* just like the Smash Tournament and the Nintendo World Championships they've done before.

Thanks OP! Gameplay looks great and certainly much faster than when Nintendo shows it off. Still not really sure if this game will be for me though. I love the concept, but I'm just not really a fighting game person. I'd still love to try it out at some point though! I'm also hoping for a decent story so that I can justify buying it down the line.

The gameplay of this game looks so much better when good players are playing it. They should definitely have another invitational right before launch.

Can't wait for this game. It was definitely the pushing factor for me getting a Switch. Just curious to know if I will mainly play the game with a regular controller or using the two joy-con.

There are supers in this game, namely with the flurry of punches that you can do, but not an item that flies around that gives you a more powerful attack.

Yeah that's as far as we know. Biff said there's a lot more up their sleeves. They could have a mode where items fly around and you punch them to get boosts.

Nintendo hints that there are moves you can only do with motion controls.
I've never heard Nintendo hint at this. They said you can play this game with standard controls. You have all the same controls just like motion.

They did say you could play this game with one joy con, but it will be more limited.

This is the first that I've seen anything about this game. The game looks like it could be pretty fun, but I'm really not a big fan of the game's art style. It looks like Virtual On featuring Slinky-arms.

So there's no throw teching in this game?

(seems like the general punish is throw, which does like 150 damage or something... on that note, chip from super is pretty high too)

Not sure how I feel about that, but we'll see.

(assuming it actually isn't there... there could be a thing where you can't tech throws whenever you have a button that's active, but I don't know)

It doesn't even look like a real game to me tbh.

They didn't? I hope it's not true.

I think, if anything, they suggested that playing with a single Joy-Con is more limited in some unspecified way.

EDIT: Beaten badly. I definitely should refresh the page before clicking reply.

PREVIEWS OF WHATS TO COME FOR ALL WHO CHALLENGE ME IN THE ARENA

Oh man, that really is night and day from the Nintendo demos of this. It's actually hard to follow what's happening sometimes it's moving so fast.

I think Ninjara is the only character that has a throw ability. So far. And even then it's more of a command throw than a regular throw.

I think I saw Ribbon girl do it too. I'm just assuming everyone has throws, but I've not seen any way to break it.

(though, throws seems to be telegraphed hard since it's like two fists coming at you at the same time)

I guess it doesn't help that everyone who wanted to win knew that Ninja was the way to go :v

Is there a way to disable the power/super/special moves in matches and render it barebones boxing?

I'm semi interested in it as a mechanic not because it's an easy way to comeback (may not be since I've seen it get stuffed a lot), but more because it's something you can use to bait people by doing an animation cancel for arms that are already out.

(but I'm not sure this is what is actually going on... need to review the tapes)

Slow paced works for a demo because it allows people to actually see how the game plays and the mechanics. We still have people on this board who think this is just a new Punchout and make other nonsense assumptions, which would only be exasperated if their first exposure was "high" (as much as you can get from first timers playing a demo) level play

Every character has a throw

You can punch people out of a super when they activate it or dodge it completely easily enough that I think the chip damage isn't a huge issue. It's not super easy to do, but you see it happen often enough where I think high level players will be able to get out of them pretty often.

For sure and, after seeing this footage, it was the right call. Hopefully if they have an ARMS exclusive direct before launch, they have some kind of "And eventually, you'll be playing like this!" section that shows high level play.

I still kinda wish you couldn't just pick whatever arm you wanted. I get it adds more variety, but kinda ruins the uniqueness of each character.

Everyone has throws that are activated by flicking both hands forward at the same time. You can cancel an opponent's throw by punching the tether in-between their hands like so:

It's hard to say for sure without playing it, but it really depends on how big of a deal the abilities are between characters. Seems like they'll be extreme enough that every character feels really different.

Yeah, I saw Dabuz do that in the finals.

(or one of the Ninjas... hard to tell unless I was looking at the player portrait :v)

Because of the chip, blocking is not something you want to do during a super activation, but I think Dabuz talked about how you could bait the super activation and then go for something else when you read the opponent and get them thinking that you're just gonna mash the punches.

Oh ok, so that's in essence throw teching.

Though I guess you need an arm on hand to avoid.

Guess it'll be a good idea to not spam both hands too much.
