Mario Kart 8 - Switch vs Wii U comparison

I knew the differences wouldn't be anything huge but I liked that look into the new pink drifting sparkles!

Switch version is a lot easier on the eyes. Not like I was expecting a huge graphical upgrade but it's much nicer to look at.

tbh, the video feels a bit low bitrate for a graphics focused thing

Edit: this was when the nintendo life video was the only one in OP, something weird with that video for the wiiu side.

Looks very similar in other videos.

The game was one the prettiest games in the market when it came out outside of IQ so fixing that and improving performance is pretty nice. Should be a treat for anyone that didn't play the original.

Probably going to catch some flack for this, but I just don't see enough to warrant the deluxe version & the $60 price tag.

It is kind of sad that there have been no announcements or My Nintendo coupons for those of us who bought all of this stuff before.

They still have all the old Club Nintendo data, and they have everyone else's eshop records. They could/should have done something to entice owner's of WiiU game some more.

I get it, I know other companies don't do it, but it that doesn't make it any better or excusable. It would just be a nice gesture to show those who have supported Nintendo in the past that they appreciate it.

As is, I am glad that some will get to enjoy this for the first time, and happy for those who want to double dip. I can wait on the sidelines because I don't think it a good idea to support this kind of business practice, even if I end up in the minority.

They don't owe Wii U owners anything. It has new content and all the DLC. The Wii U version of MK8 is still $50 I believe.

What business practice? You mean updating a game and selling it for what it's worth? What is the difference between this and a Game of the Year Edition?

I swear, lots of people on Gaf are cheap and thinks shit should cost $20.

It's called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and not Mario Kart 9. All the DLC, improved performance, and a battle mode for the price the original is going for is pretty decent.
switch version allows you to hold 2 items
It's weird because apparently it was hardware limitation the first time around. Something about the RAM or the CPU being just a tad bit too weak to handle it

It's pretty similar to a GOTY Edition though right?

Wind Waker HD was a far more substantial upgrade and was released at a discounted price. His complaint is valid.

Nintendo basically just smoothed out the edges.

That's fine. The game obviously has a larger potential audience on Switch that the Wii U. Polish and content is all MK8DX needs to succeed.

Mario Kart is a game that benefits from the smoothness of the experience. I really wish Nintendo could nail 1080p 60fps with all effects in 3-4p multiplayer but otherwise I'm happy that they've put in the work to make MK8DX feel like a full, complete, polished package.

It's an understandable posture. I very much thought likewise some time ago. Since, I made peace with no upgrade discount after realizing I already got a free game along with the original (Pikmin 3 in my case), so I don't mind the absence of extra incentives for me to double dip. Not denying they definitely would have gained goodwill from it, but as far as I'm concerned they didn't lose any with me either. Already got pampered so to speak.

(That said I don't own a Switch yet so I'm very much hoping to snatch it for cheaper once I do lol)

Weird, I never really noticed the fps drops in the Wii U version. The Switch one looks really really nice.

It's smart business.
Kart sells a ton and this will make Nintendo a shitload of money.

But it's still not as good as playing the WiiU version on Cemu?

Also, the video isn't right. Right side looks smooth and the left has weird frame pacing problems.

Wind Waker was a 10 year old GameCube game remastered with no new content. MK8D is like less than 3 years old while the original usually goes for around $50 without the DLC

Quite smart. And a lot of Switch owners most likely didn't get MK8. I know a big group of friends who own a Switch that never got a Wii U.

All the DLC, new content and modes of play, plus upgraded resolution is more than worth it. This isn't some cheap 3rd party cash grab.

As much as I love Wind Waker, that HD remaster isn't that much of an Upgrade.

It just had a few QoL improvements and of course being in HD.

The only difference i think might be there other than the gameplay upgrades (two items, new items, pink spark) is the fact that the crowds (Mount Wario, Hyrule circuit) seem to have a better framerate in Switch.

I believe that's because the original release on Wii U had weird frame pacing problems.
No, it's not. Not that kind i see in the video.

That's how the game was on Wii U. It was only 59fps which meant it repeated a frame to make up the difference. The Switch version is a full 60. It's a small thing but it goes a long way.
My version runs much smoother than what i see in the video. Either we got a magic WiiU or the video isn't right.

Can you play unique maps on Battle Mode or use the Inklings on Cemu?

Between that and the extra crispness, this really is the perfect version of the game. Mario Kart 8 was so damn good that I'm completely fine with them giving it the last bit of polish to make it a completely perfect game.

Looks good! Switch version is more crisp because of higher resolution. Hard to tell the difference between them though other than that.

Oh yeah, it really is a testament to just how damn good the game looked on Wii U, even at 720p.

What's with the Toads being different cololrs on the left side (and right side actually) of the first track shown? Are they random?

Most Nintendo fans have never owned Mario Kart 8. Switch is on track to outsell the Wii U after one year. Releasing a GOTY edition at full price was an absolute no brainer, and it's different from an HD remaster of an older game.

The WiiU version has a ~1fps snag. So the frame pacing is accurate. The Switch version fixes this issue.

Also, one of the best looking games every made is being improved significantly by being given a resolution boost AND becoming portable at the same time. Incredible. This game is as good as bought!

I'm working on my own comparison video right now. I think the courses I selected show a better visual jump (at least the direct capture footage does...not sure how it'll translate over once Youtube compresses it).
