I love pretty much everything about the Gerudo in Breath of the Wild

I really liked how the Gerudo were handled in this game. As any nerdy Zelda fan can tell you, seeing the Gerudo have an expanded role is something everyone wanted. Their distinct culture separated from the Hylians, the dynamics of how an all-female society works, the fact that the big bad is one of them... all of these could lead to very interesting stories. There was no analogue for them in Majora's Mask, and they were hauntingly absent from Twilight Princess.
There were Gerudo Pirates in MM's Great Bay. :)

Interesting point about TP, though. Where were they??

People will resist this idea, but I made a thread calling Bayonetta in Smash way before it happened, so I'll make another prediction:

Champion Link.

Yes, it's a third Link. And a second adult Link. But by default he rocks the champion tunic. All of his alts are other outfits like the Hylian tunic, etc. And his moves are all new. He wields Sheikah Slate runes like Magnesis, Stasis, Cryonis and Remote Bombs. He fires ancient arrows from his bow, and beams from his Master Sword. He can shield surf, perfect parry, and flurry rush. His final smash is summoning the Divine Beasts (the other champs appearing in a brief scene) to target and obliterate the competition. He even horse-whistles for his down taunt. :-D

BOOK IT!

Also a traveling stage set on the Great Plateau, and a Guardian Assist Trophy.

I'm down for it. I know people would complain about "representation" but as long as there is a fun character I'm game.

Nah, remove one of the other Links and give a slot to another race! One of the champions would be perfect for that (Revali needs some love in this thread!)

The Gerudo area is great, but I'll also say that it was my least favorite of the Divine Beasts. The whole rotating cylinders thing was way too frustrating for me for some reason, plus the boss is pretty cheap when you're underspecced. Came back after getting the
Master Sword
and beat him without ever using a health item.

Haha yeah I too had difficulties with the boss. Mainly because of my own combat weaknesses which he exposes. The rotating cylinders took me a few minutes to wrap my head around but I actually really enjoyed that part after I had figured out which is which and how they move. Tough boss for me with some yelling done on my part, but the beast itself and the lead up to entering it was fun for me.

Gerudo area is great. Not a place I necessarily come back to because of having to deal with changing outfits not only in the city but also in the environment. Then you got the sand storm. So my path does not lead me back there much at all. Very interesting vibe though and way of speaking. Just a slightly foreign mentality compared to the other groups in the game.

My favorite area to come back to is Zora Domain. It was also had my favorite lead up to entering the city. It was tough, long and then when you finally got there you were greeted by this beautiful place which is like no other in Hyrule. All the other places come off organic. Zora is very much a design where the Zora people were like "no we aren't just going to make the city use the environment. We will build it exactly how we want it regardless of the environment." And when it comes to the youngsters I gotta give it to Rito Village. I love the kids there (followed by the kids in Kakiriko). Actually the little Gerudo girls talking about marriage and "what's that" was really cute too. But Rito is the place for best chicks (I mean baby birds).

Loved everything about that area and characters. This game is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. It's fucking magical.

Yeah this is exactly what i want in the next Smash or in a Smash Deluxe port. I don't mind having a 3rth Link if it is a entirely new moveset it counts as a new character imo.

Honestly Toon Link and Adult realistic Link should be kept both are appealing to different kind of people, so removing them would be a huge bummer this is the reason why i don't mind a third Link.

The Gerudo region is the best region in the game. One of my favorite moments was getting lost in a sandstorm with a sand seal and then seeing the "MOLDUGA" boss health bar appear and having no idea what was coming at me until I was already dead.

was I the only one who was really weirded out by a Rito wanting to eat poultry? :(

no, there were a handful of people in another thread thinking that was cannibalism too. It's not.

Rito eat different species of birds. Zoras eat fish. Humans eat mammals.

I forgot about that. They basically had no story in MM though.

Their disappearance in TP is one of the bigger mysteries. Maybe they just had no good idea from them, but having a deserted... desert with a creepy dungeon was very atmospheric. Telma looks like a Gerudo at least.

I love it how the Gerudo are basically a mashup of various "brown" cultures. Previously, I really didn't see them as such. Which is why I didn't see the brown bad women/guy being bested by the white hero to be anything more than a simple coincidence. Or at worse a literal depiction of light vs dark, good vs evil.

But now the Gerudo are my sistas. With Urbosa even acknowledging how far they've come from the days from when the Gerudo Calamity was born. If Nintendo could get me a Switch avatar with the Afro Racer then I'd happy change from my black Splatoon squid.

Resurrected Ganondorf came and killed them all out of spite maybe? Or maybe the desert in TP proved too tough even for them. I mean seriously, that's one nasty place.

Maybe the Gerudo's absence in TP suggests that after their leader was captured in that timeline, the rest of them retreated deeper into the desert, perhaps beyond where you go in TP? Just spitballing here. Probably no reason for their omission there, other than Nintendo not finding any use for them.

Yeah they're not going to use every race in every game. Always found it weirder the Zora couldn't adapt in WW.

I didn't like them because they didn't let me wear my own clothes even after I saved them.

Yeah I thought that was pretty weird too and I got pretty surprised that I got kicked out literally just after saving them. They made exceptions for the random gorons but couldn't for the champion? They even give you Riju's
thunderhelm
and still won't let you in.

Guess they really don't like Voe's in their city, like at all.

Everyone loves Riju, right? Just checking.
Riwho? I think we all know who is the true star of Legend of Isha: Jewel of the Wild.

Heh yeah, the obsession of unnecessarily giving female characters high heels always bugs me. It's nowhere near as egregious as Zero Suit Samus for me at least, that being the absolute nadir of that trope :p
The Witcher 3 has that beat with most of its female characters (including the warrior types) sporting the heels, excessive makeup and cleavage combo.

So are people looking stuff up with this game? I'm determined not to, but seeing screenshots with all this awesome armor and a great fairy I hadn't known about gives me FOMO.

Yeah I could see Champion Link replacing TP Link in Smash.

Also I want a Riju Assist trophy where she uses the Thunder Helm to call down lightning from the sky.

Some light tips:

For the armor:
Search Gerudo Town for a window to eavesdrop. Then a door to open...

For the fairy:
Search the edges of the desert. All I'm saying!

Amazing post, OP.

The Gerudo are awesome in this game. Thier culture is vibrant, their town feels absolutely alive, and I refuse to use the Scimitar of the Seven because it occupies a place of honor in my home as the centerpiece. The whole region was great fun as well. Divine Beast was trickier than I expected, but I got through it ok eventually.

I love them as a culture enough that I almost want a spin-off...

Came in expecting a thread about the gerudo, instead found a general BotW thread. Not that I'm complaining.

I agree that the gerudo are the most developed group of people in the game, and that's a lot of fun. But they don't have the prettiest region or town in the game! That would be Lurelin by a huge margin. I want to live there... Too bad it's one of the least developed regions.

Best area in the game.

Urbosa>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>every other girl in the game.

EDIT: Zelda is thicc tho.
Zelda is fun to screen-cap. Great range of expression. Also, forget the haters, I loved her voice acting. Here are some shots I took:

I would've really liked to play as Zelda, but her melancholy character arc worked well.

One of my favorite little interactions is when you tell a guard that you are a Gerudo and the guard gets mad because you don't have the right hair color, you are short and most importantly "She barely see your abs" lol

My favorite interaction was the one with the elder Gerudo sitting next to the Hylia statue that instantly recognize that you are a Voe (men), muses about the younger generation no longer caring for things like the old gods and also tells you her own backstory in which
she tells you how she was quite the looker when she was young but lost her chance to marry because she had the notion that her true love was in an specific place that she couldn't find but instead of getting all sad about it she tells you that she has long stopped being sad herself because she managed to chase her dreams.

It was really cute and made me think about.

I wonder if the Gerudo really need a safe haven... They seem like they would kick the butt of 90% of the rest of the people in Hyrule. It feels more like they're protecting their culture.

Yeah I thought that was pretty weird too and I got pretty surprised that I got kicked out literally just after saving them. They made exceptions for the random gorons but couldn't for the champion? They even give you Riju's

They didn't, the joke is that nobody can even tell the difference between male and female Goron except (maybe) them.

...which might make me wonder if some of the bare chested Gorons we see around are actually females

It's almost like a forgotten town. For good reason too as the game doesn't push you that way at any point. Best hylian retriever there.

I'm still a bit confused on how Gerudo Town is even a thing that can keep going. It's played up as this great market town with a good trade economy with merchants trying to get in just to do business but it doesn't allow men, its out in the desert, its cold storage isn't even in the town and they have no proper transport for the ice, its at a dead end and isn't along a travel route, etc.

Yeah, Zelda's VA takes awhile to get used to but it honestly fits well enough.
Maybe the DLC will have more post game stuff with Zelda go alongside you (or being able to swap to her)

They are very sensitive to water variations as we see on TP, so it's possible they couldn't handle the new ocean water or just remained underwater/went somewhere else.

Isn't there two species of Zora? maybe the Ritos in WW were the River Zoras.

Now that I think about it, that's pretty weird. I was gonna say Goron City was the same case, but they do actually explain how they get by. My guess is that there's a lot of female merchants and tourists. Stuff like jewlery, the spa and fancy drinks are expensive.

That can't be, Medli's ancestor is a Sea Zora

I assume they have Kara Kara Bazaar to trade with men since they are not forbidden to be there (it almost seem like the purpose of that area) and I am pretty sure I found some travelers that came from the other side of the desert and that would make Gerudo Town a nice bridge between the outside world and Hyrule.

I speculate that people wanting to trade with the Gerudo would have women in their caravans so they can enter the city and trade with them.

Here's how I see it:

Gerudo Town's close proximity to Kara Kara Bazaar (where many Gerudos from Gerudo Town go to work) allows them to trade with men. Of course, foreign females are still allowed in Gerudo Town, so some outsiders can still come to Gerudo Town to trade, as well. As for cold storage, I like to think under normal circumstances (so few monsters), the transport line from the ice-house through the ruins to Gerudo Town is pretty straightforward. They must have cold storage (presumably powered by sapphires, like your heat-resistant clothes) back in town. And while Gerudo Town isn't on a trade route, the nearby bazaar is — it took me a while to spot it (I had to look at a map to notice), but there is a well-worn road leading from the bazaar to the Gerudo Canyon stable. In fact, that's how I discovered that stable at around like 150 hours in, lol.

Okay so for the eighth guardian quest for the sand boots I'm told someone in town can give me hints.

WHERE CAN I FIND THIS SOMEONE.

I think the most fleshed out section is the Zora one, but the Gerudo one is pretty cool too. Traversing the desert is fun and there are a lot of locations to go to and cool characters. Gerudo town is also the best town.
The diversity in the game is quite good as well, don't see a lot of praise for it but they're a ton of body, skin tone, and age variations throughout the game.

Neiteio returning with a screen shot barrage, it's a happy day.

I avoided the Desert area for similar reasons of not expecting much from the desert area opting to leave it third in my divine beast trip (volcano went last) but it was in fact a pretty great area that gave a good prompt for the player to follow up on its numerous sidequests.
Nice to see the Gerudo return in a rather positive light, I just wish they let me have a permanent summon-able sand seal.

Yeah gerudo is easily the most fleshed out section of the game and comes the closest to feeling complete and competent. Its a shame the other areas didn't get as much attention.

He's probably mentioning that scholar Gerudo that talks about the myths of the seven heroines, but when I talked to her she told me nothing.

You don't really need any hints though, he told you were you should look

I'd say all towns, except the Rito, are pretty fleshed out, even if the Zora have the most normal side quests of them all (unlike the Goron where you do all sorts of things)

I wished that he was more involved in the proceedings but I was more than happy for another braided "beard" owl-like in my Nintendo games.

Also Owlan from Skyward Sword got a small bridge named after him, so that was neat.

I took these screens for you! Tried to capture his unique frames:

Nintendo's on a roll with top-notch owl designs lately, between Kaneli in BotW, Skowl in Tropical Freeze, and the Decidueye line in Pokemon Sun/Moon.

Also, I think I'm going to slowly transform this thread into an elaborate excuse to share more screenshots.

(I should probably focus on finishing stories for deadline, tho.)
