Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review thread

Glad you're sensible!

I think it was interesting that the fallout to MK having a great single player was Capcom's SFV ( another pretty bare bones experience) responding by adding a (albeit half baked) single player experience. I don't think Mario Kart needs that, but I do find it funny, that despite someone thinking the SP was bare bones, that it didn't effect the game's review. Guarantee another IP with the same layout would have been docked for that. Like DooM was for the multiplayer being bare bones and people shitting on that.

I don't think that's particularly true. MK8 is offering what it always did, the thing with SFV is that it didn't. Imagine if Mario Kart did not have the championship mode and only time trials, I don't think anyone would let that slide at all. Still, I think the main fault here are scores in general.

Indeed, but even with that new mode, i've never thought the higher reviews.

Amazing!

I think it's largely because MK8 itself was slightly underrated by reviewers when they looked by over it in general, thus some upgrades in the sequel resulted in much higher scores

Is there a better digital deal than paying 59€ (french price) in your country?

I can have it for 30% less at retail, but I want all games digital. I know puyo puyo is cheaper in tbe US eshop for instance.

Agreed, I also think it's an interesting topic. I don't think it's specific to Nintendo, it's more about how good the multiplayer is on Mario Kart (and Overwatch and Rocket League to mention some non-Nintendo games). Perhaps the journalists and part of the public didn't like the MP on SFV enough to offset the shit SP and overall package, like they thought "yeah this is cool, but not cool enough to blind me from how little content there is", while Mario Kart made them go HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME I DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING WOO. It's not just about the amount of content, but also the quality in it. If you're going to do just one thing, it better be a damn good thing so people don't notice your lack of versatility.

DOOM being knocked from having a bad MP is kind of poor form on the critics because IMO the campaign is so ridiculously fun that I'd be pretty okay if it went the Wolfenstein route and didn't even have a MP mode. And in fact TNO was criticized for lacking MP, but that to me is not a bias towards Nintendo (or Blizzard or Psyonix) and just people expecting a shooter to be have that mode because of the expectations set by Call of Duty. That's one of many reasons I'm really not a fan of current gaming journalism. While I wouldn't call them biased, some reviewers can be at times a bit mindless with their criticism.

Agreed and well said.

If they're offering "what they always did," wouldn't you find that stale at a certain point? You'd think the sheen would wear off after awhile and you'd be (rightfully) criticized for just spinning the wheels again. Imagine if you got the same game over and over again, with slight iterations here and there but nothing significantly evolving or innovating. Just setting up the hypothetical. Not trying to say an update to a game that's already out is deceptive when the name, "deluxe" is right on the cover. Just basically saying if you ding a game for something in a written review and then put down a 10/10 score, you're being a little disingenuous to the consumer or even the publisher who only cares about THE SCORE. I totally agree about scores in general being pretty dumb in general as well.

I found it for 10% less on amazon as a digital download card. But weirdly I couldn't find it by searching and had to Google it.

Other than that it's the digital tax.

Yes, tournaments are no different from communities.

It's the same as it was in the original Mario Kart 8. So, whatever that was.

I vaguely recall it being based on Miiverse and a bit of a pain, so at the very least it'll be a bit different to account for that. Not going to fix that you can easily see how your times compare to your friends and the world and easily get their ghosts though.

Question for anyone that played/reviewed. What's the deal with local multiplayer control options? I saw one or two people mention yesterday that split-screen only allows you to play with on JoyCon per person. Can someone provide full deets?

Can someone offer a comprehensive review of the smart-steering feature?

How does it work? Is it an invisible wall you ricochet-off from or is it more like an invisible hand that guides you back on course and if so does it keep you on track without compromising your speed?

My wife couldn't play MK8 on the Wii U because she sucked at turns and always fell off.

Invisible hand sets you back on course.

There's a video going around from Nintendolife with auto acceleration and smart steering on where they managed to come first on 50cc on a cup without touching the controller.

This is the video of it in action I was thinking of.

Hand that guides you. The kart feels possessed.

Quick Question: Can you chose the number of bots in local MP Battle Mode And/Or turn them off completely?
Yes.

I bought Mario Kart 8 for Wii U, but that's not going to stop me from picking this up for Switch. Man, it's going to be awesome to play this on a handheld. I can't wait!

Unfortunately, balloon battle has been that way since... I think Mario Kart Wii? I think DS still had the traditional elimination mode balloon battle (someone correct me if I'm wrong). So we've had three straight games with the score-based balloon battle and it grinds my gears!

Nintendo seems to think keeping everyone playing the game at all times is an improvement over a mode where you have to sit out for a few minutes because you got eliminated. At least make it an option in local multiplayer, Nintendo!

And Mario kart DS is the last time I can remember enjoying battle mode. Funny that.

I'm in this camp as well, but I'm really surprised to see so many responses that echo this sentiment. I'd love to see a Gaf poll that tracks how many of us double-dip on MK8.

The question is, will polygon refuse to review it out of embarrassment? Will they review it and pretend they have no history with the game? Will they stick to their guns and say it will be the worst selling game accompanied by a crappy chart?

Mario Kart Deluxe has sold zero copies so far. Embarrassing!

Also the last apparition of Block Fort.

I think the decision of moving into a score based system is due to time constraints. Having a survival mode could lead to 15+ minutes online battles between only 2 players.

I wish they would still include it for local multiplayer though.

Cant wait for this next week! Switch is my first Nintendo console since my n64 and My first MK since the N64 days. Soooo hyped! One thing great about never owning a wii u is that these "ports" are all new games to me. Anyone else going full digital with this game? Have my 128 gb micro sd card coming today and I feel this is a perfect game to go digital...plus I never have to take out my zelda cart then :)

I think I'm going digital with this as well. Partially because I can keep Zelda in the machine and partially because I always want to have Mario Kart on my Switch.

And folks like you who haven't had a Nintendo machine since the N64 days must be in heaven right now. Best Zelda since OoT, best Mario Kart ever, and spiritual successor to Mario 64 scheduled for the holiday season. Perfect machine for the lapsed Nintendo fan.

"You would think" sounds objective because you are wording it like it is assumed by others and is based on some kind of precedent. That first post also assumed single player wasn't improved from the original release, but it was.

My pointing it out when I did makes sense because I was pointing out that your posts went from basically "they didn't improve the single player and are charging full price" to "they didn't improve it enough for me to pay full price," which is different.

But this isn't really an interesting conversation and I don't see you backing down, so I'm just going to drop it.
It sounds like it would only read like an objective post if you somehow have never heard anyone criticise the SP and then went onto pull a weird "gotcha" response in turn afterwards. It would be like if their "improvement" of battle mode were more modified race tracks and someone coming in and saying it is totally improved which seems pretty silly. That response doesn't make sense with the second post when it is absolutely clear that that one is an opinion.

You're right this isn't interesting, I'd have thought we would be talking about what they could do for the future games in series single player wise instead of talking about posts not being opinion-y enough.

Bringing back mission mode would be the right start. Having specific tasks for different weight classes and characters, coin collection objectives, maybe finishing tracks using a specific items or without items, lots of fun stuff you could do.

That doesn't make any sense, you used subjective take on my second post where it's clearly illustrated that it's an opinion. There is no point in telling me that. I don't think that first post reads like an objective fact either when it starts with "you would think".

Lol, he just want to argue. People love tryna correct people that dont even need to be corrected on here.

I keep going back and forth on this game. I havent played the 2nd DLC pack so that's probably going to push me over. Plus I just want another Switch game to play!

Shame about the online still being barebones though

psh, everyone knows Switch will only sell to current Nintendo fans. Those lapsed fans have all moved on to PS4/Xbox/mobile by now.
