Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review thread

Nah.. I'm not bitter about it at all. I'm just calling it what it is.

So when is Polygon going to update the chart?

I need to know from them if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is going to be the worst selling Mario Kart game of all time.

Huh, I had no idea the game had a proper wired "LAN" mode built in. I thought you just played the game via Wireless Play with however many consoles you could link up.

Well, shit...it turning into LAN Mode when 2-Player selected crushed my: 2 people on Docked Switch, 1 on Handheld Switch dream...

That was good :D

Hey, I'm not hating on the game or people that love it. I'm simply saying this port is overrated in my opinion.

"I haven't played the game or really know what the word overrated means, I'm just saying it like it is cause it's the internet and I can say words that sound more intellectual than they actually are."

How are they doing this? USB-to-Ethernet dongle x 2? Or am I misunderstanding and it's just regular local peer-to-peer WiFi?

That was the setup at our PAX East demo.

It's wired LAN using the Nintendo LAN Adapter. If you go to that product link, you'll see that its compatible with Switch.

LAN is actually activated via a button command... L & R plus clicking in the left stick I believe.

You should still be able to use your 3-player method just fine via wireless.

Edit: Yep.

After all the Nintendo Switches are started and have fired up the game, here is how you begin LAN mode:

  • Navigate to the game's main screen.
  • Hold down your L and R buttons and press the left analog stick on the player-one controller.
  • You will see the ”Wireless Play" change to ”LAN Play."
  • Confirm your controllers and Mii profiles.
  • Whoever is the host will choose ”Create Room." Others will select the room in the lobby.
  • Select your characters, karts, event, and track.
  • Have fun!

Keeping the dream alive! Thanks, man!

I use an internal capture card called Avermedia H727, I've been meaning to upgrade it to a 4K capable card but I suppose there's no need if I'm primarily providing Switch content.

Very cool. I've always been interested in getting into that line of work.

I'm not hating on the game.. but it's not a 94 metacritic game when MK8 was an 88. It's maybe an 89/90.

So I feel it's overrated.

I'm sorry but the 94 MC score is simple mathematics.

88 for MK8
+1 for resolution bump
+1 for pink boost thingy
+1 for new battle mode
+1 for DLC 1
+1 for DLC 2
+1 for new characters
=
94 MC score.

So it's rated exactly where it should be. Can't argue with math.

I think you are taking this too seriously.

You are attributing a grand logic to these scores when it's just individual people liking a game and its content and portability.

The original batch of Mario Kart 8 reviews were very positive but most publications docked points for the lack of a proper battle mode. It really isn't surprising that Deluxe has a much better metascore. Heck I think Deluxe is about as perfect as video games get, pure simple fun.

The DLC is still the biggest game changer. It really did change a lot of likes to loves which were never reflective of the vanilla reviews.

I don't think I'm taking it too serious. I simply said it was overrated.

I was gonna leave it at that.. but I guess I could just convince myself that the game is an 88 and that it's got "bonus points" for being on Switch.. with it's added portability.

16 additional tracks + Battle Mode seems like enough to boost its score by six points.

Eh.. DLC for an 88 game would still be DLC for an 88 game.

This was my game of 2014 so I can't say I'm surprised to see the game scoring so well and surpassing the original version. Can't wait to play this...again :)

Gonna be fun jumping back in, excited for battle mode and to really dive into the DLC I didn't play a whole lot the first time through.
