Are some of them Asian? I've been told on GAF that anime characters are generally Japanese unless stated otherwise; I'm guessing that logic extends to video game characters as well

Well, the main hub of Splatoon is a parody of Shibuya (called by the pun name "Booyah" base) so i guess you could say they are japanese.

Love it, even if it's a guest character. I'd love it even more if Odyssey introduced a human/esque character of color that the Mario series could call its own.

I do. I would have cared even more when I was a kid, believe it or not.

Seriously. As a (black) kid you eventually go through all the phases to rationalize not seeing any characters of color in games and settle on what's there.

But then it happens and you just can't stop grinning.

Especially when the Inklings are cute and charming as fuck and they didn't fuck up with the various shades.

Have they been unanimously claimed by Black twitter though?

They were claimed day and date.

Is Splatoon the most inclusive IP of Nintendo? Female Inklings aways in the front, and black inklings too.
It's probably up there.

The inklings are honestly among my favourite Nintendo designs ever, they just ooze personality, and the diversity is awesome.

Some of you guys smh, try putting yourselves in someone elses shoes before you go and shit on their parade. Hopefully this is the first step of many to introduce a more diverse cast to nintendo, it would be great to see a black mario princess or character, or the option to play as a black, asian, or latino link in the next zelda if they give us more creation Options.

Inklings are technically avatars, so it works. But I'd like to see Nintendo focus on this more in the future. Elma is darker skinned and she's badass in Xenoblade X.

It's some much appreciated diversity on the roster.

I personally love the way the black Inkling Girl looks. Her dark skin tone and purple hair goes especially well with courses at sunset, like Dragon Driftway and Animal Crossing [Autumn]. I noticed this while watching the GameXplain video, and it made her one of the first characters I want to try. Very striking color scheme.

Also pleased to see Dry Bones back, and I've recently taken a liking to Bowser Jr. thanks to his excellent implementation in Smash.

Really looking forward to MK8DX!

Honestly it's a pretty big deal. Seems kinda overlooked when Splatoon was released, though. Nintendo has a very big problem with light skinned characters. Not that it's a problem problem, as I believe a creator can make whatever character they want without the need for someone calling it racist and what not, but the fact of having this characters is a great thing.

Zelda also shows a diversity push. Middle eastern inspired race and even the Hylians come in various skin tones on top of age and body type diversity

I fail to see how this is a big deal. This is a franchise where you can pick bones, baby plumbers, and literal ghosts as your character. It's not really the vessel for statements on identity, to be honest.

Pretty big deal, actually.

Why do people always have to step in to these threads to tell people that they don't care? We get it you're probably white.

Definitely; it may not seem like much, but it's actually astounding to think that something as big as Mario Kart has lacked non-Mii, human characters of any ethnicity other than Caucasian.

Same with Smash (I guess you can argue Ganondorf & maybe that one Olimar costume, but there aren't even any non-white human women, except maybe Nana). I don't even know who they could add; I haven't played BotW, but aren't there a lot of cool/prominent new Gerudo characters?

Okay lol I'm sure the various baby plumbers and bones around the world feel very represented.

Also wtf is a race statement actually

I believe the new Splatoon Amiibo are black inklings, so they are being recognized somewhat.

Honestly a lot of anime characters don't look asian at all. More like western with asian features mixed in. Same in games tbh.

Have we seen all of the Arms characters yet?

Now that you bring this to light yeah they couldve. Hopefully they aint reveal everyone yet or plan something.

no

there is one tan looking woman teased but havent seen her 100%

Well one of the leaked characters definitely looks of colour to me.

Yes ARMS may turn to have one but don't hide it for later.

Also Minmin is cute and all with the Ramen bowl but a black character with a KFC bowl is not gonna fly

As a black man it sounds like comedy gold but that shit will backfire so hard

that is why I am a weirded out by Minmin it is touching a line that people are not even talking about

Its nice to see people that look like you represented in games even if you don't pick them. I'm happy its becoming more common place especially in the indie scene.

Come to think of it i can't think of the last indie game with a decently sized playable cast that didn't have several ethnic groups represented. It will be nice when companies like Sony, MS and Nintendo catch up without shoehorning and misrepresentation.

This is kind of a weird sentiment to me when I can look at this post and think "hmm, look at all this wacky ass shit that's been introduced *before* a basic nice looking whimsical black character in this 20+ year old franchise."

The alt colour for Inkling boy v1 has darker skin, and Inkling girl v2 is dark too.
These look "tan" to me, but it's still nice to see different skin tones. (On a side note, I -really- want that girl amiibo!)

The next big step for Nintendo will be to put a black character on the cover.

I know what you mean. I'm actually a dark-skinned latino but the experiences sound similar. There was nothing out there for me, growing up. Closest we had were certain fighting game characters, but I didn't exactly see myself in Dhalsim or T-Hawk, lol. I remember playing Knights of the Old Republic and making an avatar that looked like me for the first time and it was such a thrill :)

For children of color especially, the inklings are probably the best addition to the Nintendo universe ever.

Are there even any black Mario characters?

Maybe in one of the RPGs.
This got me thinking about how cool it'd be if they just straight-up added a black character. I mean, Waluigi came out of nowhere in Mario Tennis 64, and Toadette in Mario Kart: Double Dash. Nothing stopping them from inventing a character out of the blue.

They look Latinos! ;p

Is the girl a darker skin tone than the boy, or is that just lighting in OP image?

Garrett Hawke just wanted to make a positive and happy thread... and people are already bringing it down. Like c'mon now. Damn.
