I'm worried for Luke. Unless he's going to use the Force to defend himself, I don't see how he'll fend off The First Order's inevitable assault in the film. We see Rey running with Luke's lightsaber still in her possession towards what I assume is Luke caught by Kylo Ren etc. He's screwed, isn't he?

He can take care of himself, don't worry

I think I'd actually sooner bet on Kylo dying in this movie rather than Luke. Kylo killing off another OT hero to the protagonist's dismay would actually be lame from a overall structure perspective. The context would have to be really different for it to be interesting enough to throw in there.

Also, Luke would kick Kylo's ass into space.

if anything I'd say it cements him as a more fearsome villain after his defeat on Starkiller base. But I don't think that he'll be able to do it if Snoke isn't involved.

Luke should be able to kick Kylo Ren's ass into space, but I imagine Kylo will have just completed Snoke's training, so he'll get a power up in the film.

Also, Luke doesn't have his lightsaber so I'm not sure what he can do to defend himself.

I'm saying Kylo Ren vs Luke would obviously go to Luke.
But Kylo Ren & Snoke vs Luke might prove more difficult. Maybe Rey is running to try to save him but is too late and watches Kylo Ren deliver the killing blow instead.

I will repeat.

I want Luke Skywalker chucking hadokens in this movie.

Fucking big ballin' ass Metsu Hadokens.

He learned it from Yoda.

(pretend it's a ball that comes out)

Why is everyone presuming Snoke is even in fighting shape? I assumed from 7 and rumors that the dude is a great manipulator and talker but has no powers. He's tricked everyone into fearing him and uses Ben to take out his stronger enemies. He definitely has dark side knowledge and knew what Palpatine was doing but I always assumed he lost his powers or something.

Which is also why I feel like Ben is going to kill him after he finds out the truth.

I can totally see them putting Kylo over by having him be the one to kill Luke, which would be so, so utterly lame IMO.

This is starting to sound like some Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince shit

When Han said to Kylo "He's just using you for your power, once he's done, he'll crush you". I feel like Snoke has to be powerful enough to at least "crush" Kylo, right?

Shit ain't professional wrestling. If Kylo kills Luke it's not like setup for a squash match or whatever. There's probably gonna be some justification for it, and the execution is going to make it feel right.

And why does every character have to die? Han filled the Obiwan role already, let Luke go on his way in 9 and whenever 10 comes out, he can be mentioned in passing or as legend etc.

It's already established in TFA not only that Snoke is a force user, but that he's super powerful. He's the one who feels the awakening and mentions it to Kylo..

Yeah, he also tells Kylo to bring Rey to him in person. I imagine he wants to corrupt her or something like Palpatine tried with Luke in ROTJ.

I need to rewatch TFA lol. I always felt like he was in touch with the force but not actually able to use it anymore, instead manipulating a new generation of minds to get revenge (since he was waiting for Palaptine to fall and make his move).

That would be a pretty interesting theory had we not been given the context established in TFA.

I'm personally hoping he's a little guy like Yoda

Actually, that reminds me. In one of the books or visual data books, don't know which source, it says Snoke watched the Empire rise and fall with Palaptine. That he was waiting for his chance to take over. If Snoke is so powerful and a dark side user and he was around for the formation and fall of the Empire, why didn't he kill Palaptine himself or take him on then take his Empire?

playing the long con. There are plenty of reasons he could have waited for the power vaccum to be opened up and there's also the fact that the period of the rise and fall of the empire is like 60-70 years.

Maybe he was young and his powers grew over that period.

I've been purposely not following production for months

whoops
but to be fair we've talked about it in this thread a couple times.

If he's capable of outliving it and eventually picking up the pieces with little difficulty, why not wait?

Andy Serkis said Snoke is "powerful but vulnerable". I personally think he has ties to the mysterious threat in the Unknown Regions that Aftermath and Thrawn hint at, if not being that threat.

So either Disney is going to give a backstory as to how some random guy practiced the dark side for DECADES waiting for his chance to take power or they're going to brush it off. This guy sat around for decades? And what's his beef with Palpy? Why not start his own group when he's young, creating more chaos? He somehow knew in the long haul, the Jedi would be undone and the Empire would fall? I don't know, I wouldn't wait almost 60 years for chance happenings.

I actually never noticed how the Snoke/Kylo scene directly mirrors the one in ESB where the emperor senses a disturbance in the force when Luke blows up the death star. Makes you realize that there was probably the same type of "awakening" that we see in TFA, in ESB. Petty awesome poetry

It's not a big deal just letting you know for conversational purposes :p

Ahsoka's blades are white though because she freed the crystals from an Inquisitor. Red lightsabers happen because dark siders make them "bleed" by imposing their will upon them.

She left her green sabers on Mandalore to make it look like she was killed during Order 66.

You know what, maybe Snoke DID attempt to kill Palpatine? He definitely has battle scars and may be injured enough to make him "vulnerable". Maybe he ran into Vader at one point.

The thing is though. The Emperor also accumulated a lot of loyalty. I don't think trying to forcefully take over would have gone well with a lot of the Empire and he would have been ousted.

Waiting for there to be a power vaccum really was the best line of action. Because at least then he can sneak in and create a new order that's entirely loyal to him.

But really there are tons of reasons that he could have and rightfully should have waited.

what? I thought it was because of the Kyber crystal in the saber.

Never thought about that especially considering the EU was wiped...but my point is he watched Palaptine rise to power, before the Empire was formed. That's a RIDICULOUS amount of patience for anyone.

They could have a story about him attacking and barely escaping. But he was alive during the prequels and even had the patience THEN? Hot damn, he better not be undone by some punk kid after waiting a lifetime lol.

I can imagine some sort of symmetry where Luke meets Kylo one to one like Han and kills him, maybe without a fight, just a confrontation where Kylo thinks he wouldnt do it and BAM, the fanbase reaction would be incredible if it happened.

I mean, maybe not literally that, but I definitely don't want to spend a lot of time with Luke twirling a blade, and I definitely do want - nay, need - to have a 'light mirror' of the holyshitwhatthefuck moment you had in Jedi with Palpatine's Force Lightning. After all, this is the most powerful Jedi ever, who has now spent years researching the earliest pieces of Jedi history, and it's the proper on-screen return of the original Star Wars hero. Dude better fuck some shit up hardcore like we've never seen before.

Also, as I've said before: ever since I watched the Mortis arc
I've NEEDED to see Luke grab a lightsaber blade. Or at the very minimum forcibly deactivate one. And THEN fuck shit up.

You're assuming that he was actively waiting the entire time. But maybe he just saw the oppportunity and took it.
I bet Snoke ends up being the size of Yoda

we've already gone over that he's not, like 10 minutes ago lol

what? I thought it was because of the Kyber crystal in the saber.

That's Legends (even then, the Sith used synthetic crystals which came up red).

In canon, all kyber crystals are clear naturally. You may have noticed this on Jedha when the Partisans steal the crystals being guarded by the Imperial tank. The change to green, blue, purple, or yellow happens when a Jedi communes with the crystal for the first time. Dark siders force crystals to obey them rather than working with them in harmony, hence they turn red in "pain".

This is also presumably why the central beam of the Death Star superlaser is red before it turns green from the focusing lasers or whatever.
